2 . It fills me with joy that I am a member of the UN Global Education First Youth Advocacy Group. I have plenty of volunteer experiences and it is from these experiences that I was chosen out of 400 people who wanted to join to serve in this group.
When I finished my middle school, I started volunteering in a few non-governmental organizations. I began to understand a lot about community development. I took part in some projects and activities about the environment, peace and HIV/AIDS.
I had many obstacles(障碍)while volunteering because people don’t think volunteer work is important. People consider volunteering as a waste of time. They can’t imagine the fact that someone can work without pay. My friends and relatives advised me to stop volunteering. 1 felt hard at some point but 1 couldn’t stop because I loved doing it. I decided not to pay attention to their advice but to continue my work.
One day, a group of young people came to me and said that they were all thankful to me for the changes I had brought into their lives through peer(同龄人)education. I was so happy to hear that because it brought great joy to me .My advice to peers is that we can’t succeed in life overnight. We have to work hard to achieve our dreams. Even if you graduate from the best school in the world, it’s not enough because what matters most is your skill. The best way to discover who you are is to volunteer. Volunteering does not only allow you to offer your services, but to learn and discover new things and improve your skills. One secret of voluntary work is to avoid thinking about money because that is where the problem lies.

3 . It was a Christmas night. I was an unlucky nurse who had to work on such a beautiful festival. When I was complaining(抱怨)about it, three people appeared at my desk — a tired woman and two children. “Are you all sick?” I asked doubtfully because they seemed all right. “Yes,” the woman answered weakly and lowered her head .
But when they started to present their problems, things became unclear. One child had a fever, but his temperature was OK. The other child had an earache, but she could not tell me which ear hurt. It seemed that the mother was pretending to cough. Something was wrong. But I only explained that it might take a while before a doctor could meet them. “Take your time, please,” said the mother. I checked their charts — no address. Suddenly I knew, they were homeless while the hospital was warm. The family huddled(蜷缩)together under the Christmas tree, smiling and talking with each other sweetly. Quietly, I went back to the nurses’ station and told them what happened in the waiting room. It was just like God sending us a gift on Christmas Day. The nurses’ station suddenly came back to life. All the nurses went into action for “a Christmas emergency(急诊)”.
We took out our meals for our Christmas “patients”. We also put together oranges and apples as presents. We tried to exceed the needs of a family who only wanted a warm place on Christmas night. Later, the little girl kissed me and said, “Thanks for being our angel(天使).”

4 . Indonesia is my mother’s homeland and one of my favorite countries. Since I was young, I had learned a lot about the country and become interested in it. For a long time I had wanted to do something for the country and people there, and I thought volunteering (做志愿者) would be a good and fun way to do so.
I received the greatest pleasure from being with the children. Teaching my first English class in Aceh was exciting, but I was rather nervous. As time passed by, I learned how to be a better teacher. Teaching was actually the most enjoyable of my many responsibilities (责任).
Many children were shy at first. But when they relaxed, they would start talking and telling you a lot of funny things. I believed we were helping them build up their confidence.
For the children who are more in need, The Education Program (TEP) will collect donations (募捐) to help them.
As a volunteer, I had to visit the TEP children at home once a month and help them write a thank-you letter to their sponsors. This was a way for the children to communicate with their sponsors. Sometimes the sponsors would write back to the children. Seeing the children’s happy faces, I had a great sense of pleasure.

9 . When a group of firefighters saw an elderly woman in a wheelchair trying very hard to get to her door last week, they decided to spend their weekend building a walkway for her.
An officer in Missouri said that their firefighters had been coming back from a call last week when they noticed an elderly woman trying to move her wheelchair across her front yard. It’s not even(平坦的).
“Many stairs and uneven pathways unfortunately led to the woman falling over in her wheelchair while trying to enter the house, the fire department wrote. Luckily, the patient was uninjured, but we saw a chance to help.”
The group of firefighters later came back to the woman’s home and spent their days off building a new walkway to her front door.
“She now will have an even pathway to enter her home,” the fire department wrote. “A huge thank-you goes out to the members that spent their days off helping those in need.”
Since the fire department posted photos of the firefighters at work on their website, their post has been shared hundreds of times with social media users praising the men for their good turn.
“That’s what it’s all about! Neighbors are helping neighbors. Job well done!” one user wrote, with another adding, “It was very kind of you firefighters to spend your free time helping someone in need. Thank you so much for the service that you do in saving people.”
Great to take care of those in need, a user wrote. “What a nice gesture on your days off. Thank you.”
“I live in a community full of care too. You find it whenever people ask how you’re doing because they care, not because they’re getting paid to do so.
