Recently, Chinese netizens(网民)praised a 5-year-old boy from Xinxiang, Henan province, for his move: he hasn’t had a haircut for three years to help children with cancer.
In a video posted online, Guangnian showed his more than 30-centimeter-long hair. He thought of this form of volunteering about three years ago when he watched a documentary about children with cancer in which he noticed girls with total hair loss as a side effect of the treatment.
After that, Guangnian decided to grow his hair long and donate them to children who have lost their hair because of cancer treatment.
No one took his words seriously at that time, as he was just a 3-year-old kid. They did not expect that Guangnian will stick to his decision all the way.
“On my first day of school, I was mistaken for a girl by others. I told them I was a boy, but they still called me a girl, which upset me,” Guangnian said.
Though faced with teasing(戏弄), Guangnian never thought of giving up even when his mother tried several times to ask him to have his hair cut short.
“Sometimes I would envy(羡慕)my litter brother’s short hair because people could tell he is a boy from his look. But my father told me that boys should not fear being laughed at. I’m not giving up. I want to help others through this way,” he said.
According to Guangnian’s mother, he could live up to his expectations to donate his hair this summer.

You may find it easy and fun to use smartphones. But for many old people, it’s a hard thing, Liu Siyuan from Beijing 101 Middle School saw the problem. He tried to teach the old how to use smartphones with a guidebook.
The 16-year-old set up a volunteer group called Silver Hair. It took its seven members around half a year to write a 300-page book called May I Show You How to Use Smartphones?
The group made a survey of more than 1, 000 old people and talked with many in old people’s homes. They found out what the old people cared most about with smartphones. “How to use WeChat” topped the list. This became one part of the book. The other nine parts include online shopping, using online maps and more. “The old people can look up the information in the book anytime they need, just like using a dictionary,” said Liu.
The group printed out 500 copies and handed them out. They’ll soon work on the second book that will have more instructions about hospital registration(挂号) and photo editing.
Thanks to the volunteers of Silver Hair, the old people’s life has become easier and more convenient.

6 . Mangshui village is in Yunnan. Most adults in the area work in the city, leaving their children behind at home. The children could hardly meet their parents in a year.
Several years ago, Kang Yu arrived at the village school as a teaching volunteer. He found these children didn’t know how to express their emotions (情绪) properly. To give an outlet (发泄途径) for their emotions, Kang began to teach them to write poetry (诗). At first, the children didn’t even know what poetry was. After a few months, more and more students fell in love with writing poems.
Kang was surprised that when writing poetry, students were a little different. In the past, they liked making trouble in class. But gradually they became quiet in poetry class. In their poems, sometimes they wrote about loneliness and sadness when missing their parents. And sometimes they wrote happy memories around them. A boy who spent little time with his father handed in a poem: “Ten years later, I want to be a father like the sea, and I’ll let my children sit on my back, which is like a boat for them.” These young poets (诗人) became better at writing poems.
Poetry cannot help children solve their problems in life, but at least students can take poetry writing as a way to express their emotions and see the beauty in life. “When children love life, it is possible for them to reduce pain or find new happiness,” said Kang.
