2 . Many people think heroes need to be handsome, rich or very smart. But for me, a hero is a person who always helps others. My hero is Uncle Bruce. His father is a worker. Uncle Bruce is the eldest son in his family and he has four younger brothers and sisters.

He was good at neither writing nor math. In fact, he never did well at school. He had to give up school at a very young age. He worked and gave all his money to help his parents. When he was older, he found that he was very interested in fixing things. He collected broken things which people threw away and fixed them into good ones. In fact, he could fix almost everything that did not work. He worked hard and never gave up. Finally, he opened his own repair shop. It took him about 20 years to become a successful shopkeeper.

Now, he is very rich and has another four shops. But Uncle Bruce never forgets the days when he had nothing. He gives money to poor families, gives poor kids books to read and offers them free lunch. He also encourages people to reuse things. He always says, “Make good use of what you have because we have one earth.”

I’m proud of him. He is really a hero.

Wang Ping is a cleaner. He     1     worked in a park for 5 years. He is also a good father. Nothing can make him     2     than playing with his little daughter in his free time.

Last Tuesday afternoon, while he was     3     the park, suddenly, he heard a woman crying for help. He ran up     4     to see what happened. The woman’s 15-month-old baby girl choked (窒息) on a small piece of pear     5     her face turned purple. The baby was too young to save herself, and the mother was so nervous that she didn’t know how to save her daughter properly. Luckily, Wang Ping knew what to do. He took the baby in his     6     without thinking twice. With the mother’s help, Wang Ping held the baby upside down and gave her a few pats (轻拍) on the back. After a short while, he succeeded in getting the piece of pear out of her mouth and the baby began to cry. Her mom was so thankful because her daughter was     7     .

Wang Ping tried his best and saved the     8     life. In his mind, helping others is just helping     9     . He hoped more people could     10     to help the people in need if possible.

5 . As I walked to my car at a local shopping center, I saw a man who was sitting on the ground with a sign that said, “Please help”.

I often give $20 to people like him, but now I decided to invest (投入) some time as well. I stopped and said, “Come on, brother. Pick up your things and let’s get you some groceries (食品杂货).” As we walked back into the shop, we exchanged a few words. I learned that he had a place to live, but had no money to buy food.

Anyhow, he shared his story and I still wanted to help him. We started with some fruit and vegetables. He chose some cabbages first, then got some carrots and a couple of onions. I asked him what he hadn’t had for a long time. He said meat. So we got him a nice steak. As we were talking, he told me he had two boys. A big pack of instant noodles went into the basket. He also asked if he could get some toothpaste (牙膏). Of course, that was fine, too.

I was not sure exactly what had happened to this man, but I believed he didn’t lie to me. He only took what he really needed. I know I won’t do this all the time, as I couldn’t afford to do so, but treating people with dignity, kindness and compassion is important. Helping others is a good way to help the world, even in just a small way. We often feel as though there’s nothing we can do to make the world better, but that’s just not true.

I wanted to make my life interesting and meaningful after I graduated     1     university. Later I decided to become a volunteer professor and was sent to an African country, Ghana (加纳). So with a group of     2     young volunteers, I went on my journey, I was very thankful for this great chance.

The schools there were     3     poor. The students had to walk miles to get to     4     schools. They had lots of work at home. Though they had boring days, these children     5     very happy.

This was my first time to live     6     in a different culture. I had to     7     the living conditions. There was no electricity, running water, phone     8     the Internet. There was no air-conditioner at a place where the     9     often goes over 38℃! It was too hot to move. Before coming here, I never     10     I could live in such an environment. However, I could enjoy a beautiful African sunset each day.

I think that experience is unforgettable!
