Zhang Guimei is famous as the headmaster of Huaping High School for Girls. She has tried her best     1     (provide) education for girls from poor families.

It was     2     (difficulty) to set up a school, but Zhang never gave up. It     3     (take) her a long time to raise money for the school. In 2008, she set up the Huaping High School for Girls in Lijiang, Yunnan Province. It is the     4     (one) high school for poor girls to study for free. Zhang spends most of her money     5     (help) her students. She regards the school as her home. Although she has serious     6     (healthy) problems, she always takes morning classes with her students.

I was feeling a little sad because my mother had lost her job. One day, while I was walking on the street, I heard that a beautiful piece of piano music was played above the noise of the people. I walked     1     (slow) to find out where it was coming from. Then I saw a young lady     2     (sit) at a piano.

She was singing     3     (song) about love, believing in     4     (you) and keeping on trying. The way she was singing made me     5     (relax). I stood there quietly, watching her playing on such a crowded New York square.

She noticed me, I walked over and told her how good her music sounded. “Thank you,” she said. “I have been going through a hard time recently,     6     you’ve made me hopeful again,” I said to her.

“I’m glad that I could help you,” she replied. “Why are you so sad?”

“Well, my mom has     7     (lose) her job, and I’m not so sure what to do...”

“Did you notice the way you were     8     (walk)? Your head was down,” she said. “Don’t be upset, because the opportunity (机会) comes in different ways and if your head is down, you might not see it. You should smile more... lift your head     9    .”

I looked at her, amazed at how she was encouraging me. “Why are you playing the piano here now?” I asked her with a smile.

She explained that she saw a lot of     10     (happy) people in the world and she tried to cheer them up by playing music. 

I smiled a little wider, realizing that no difficulties could stop me from going on.

If an old man suddenly falls down in front of you, will you help him? Most of us would choose to help him     1     we know it’s the right thing to do. But others might refuse     2     (do) so. In my opinion, we should not only think about     3     (we) but others as well.

I’ve had an experience like this before. I saw a woman walking with a baby in her arms while it     4     (rain) heavily. They were both wet because they don’t have     5     umbrella. I held out my umbrella for them     6     (quick) and I walked several miles with them till they got home. The woman thanked me a lot for     7     I did for her. Offering help to people     8     trouble can make them feel really warm. And perhaps one day we’ll become the ones who need help. So why don’t we just reach out a helpful hand whenever we can? The more we trust and help each other, the     9     (good) our world will be.

The Small Friends Pet Shelter was started by a group of high school students and their parents. When they saw many pets which were left behind     1     their families moved away, they found their own ways to help out.

Today, there     2     about 70 cats, 50 dogs, 3 rabbits and a few turtles living at the shelter. The young people work hard to keep the place clean take care of     3     animals in the shelter, and help them to find new owners. It is hard work,     4     the young people working at the shelter think it is worth it.

Now, they have already helped nearly 200     5     to find homes. So if you find a pet that is lost, call the young at the Small. Friends Pet Shelter! That is what the animals really need most.

A few months ago, I learned that the City Charity needed some volunteers. I used to be the organizer in my group of friends. So I sent letters to ten friends. I would like     1     set up a volunteer group. I wanted to invite my friends to join the group. Almost all of them agreed.

One day, several of my friends brought some food and helped prepare the meal for     2     disabled. “I felt happy when I saw those people get the food!” said one friend. Another friend suggested     3     we should do that every month. We all thought it was a great idea. Now each month there     4     new hands that join the group. One woman even invites another group of her friends to join us.

I love working     5     a volunteer because I can get much joy from others’ happy faces. Let’s volunteer together!

Many years ago, my dad worked in a children’s hospital.

A girl in the hospital had a strange disease. She couldn’t move her body except her head. She was very s    1    , but even the doctors couldn’t help her.

My father decided to try to help her. He brought paints, brushes and paper to her room. He hung the paper on the wall, put the brush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t u    2     his hands at all. Then he told the girl, “See, you can do anything you want to do.”

Soon, the girl began to paint with her own mouth, but my dad fell ill at that time and he had to stay a    3     home.

Two months later, my dad went back to the hospital. When he went into the hospital, the girl ran to him q    4    . She gave my dad a picture a    5     said, “I drew this picture with my hands. Thank you for helping me.”

My dad would cry every time he told us this story. He would say, “Love is powerful!”
