文章大意:本文讲述的是为了让学生平衡好学习和社交的关系,远离手机,学校开展了“无屏幕日”的活动。
1 . 请认真阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题或完成任务。

Screen-Free Day

I remember the first time I suggested screen-free days in our school to some of our student leaders. I played a joke on my group and said. “What do you think if we go a week without using our computers or smartphones?”

They laughed, and one of them said, “No way, Mr. White. That’s impossible for us!” I could feel their worry, and told them that I was only considering the days without “screens”. Even that idea left them feeling upset.

According to a survey we did, most students in our school spend about six hours a day on screens. Many of my students start their day by checking their smartphones. I often see them looking at their phones when getting off the bus or at parents’ drop-off because they can’t use their own “screens” at school. They usually work on computers at school for at least two hours during the day.

It’s clear that our students spend a lot of time on screens. There’s no doubt that we can see the advantages of technology. However, we teachers also want to make sure that students have balanced leaning and social experiences away from their screens. That’s why we have come up with the idea of screen-free days.

During the course of the year, we have built in several screen-free days that require us to make different plans for our students about how they will communicate with one another and the world around them without “screens”,

Fun activities, for example, card games and room escape (密室逃脱) games, are organized at school. In these activities, students make social communications without smartphones and have face-to-face communication without checking on “likes” (点赞) they’ve got online. These fun activities also make it possible for the whole grade to enjoy the company of their friends with no smartphones.

After our first screen-free day, students mentioned that they were surprised they enjoyed it. It is important to find ways to help our students connect with one another. While technology is already part of our world, it shouldn’t play such an important role in a learner’s life.

1. How many hours do most students in the school spend on screens every day?
________________________________________________________________
2. Why have the teachers come up with the idea of screen-free days?
________________________________________________________________
3. What fun activities can the students have at school?
________________________________________________________________
4. What do you think of the idea of screen-free days? Why do you think so?

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了大多数雨林动物依靠它们的颜色生存。

2 . There are thousands of kinds of animals in the Amazon rainforest, each coloured differently. Most rainforest animals use their colours for survival.

Some animals use colour to protect themselves from their predators (猎食者). An example is the green iguana (鬣鳞蜥). Young iguanas are bright green and hide among the bright green leaves of the trees where they live. As they grow older, their colour becomes duller. Old iguanas live higher in the trees, where the colours all around are less bright.

Other animals are predators and use colours to hide from their prey. The boa constrictor snake (蟒蛇) is a good example. Some boas are grey or brown, and their colours help them hide on branches. The emerald boa is green and white, so it can easily hide in the leaves. A boa hides in a tree and waits for a bird to fly by. When one does, the boa grabs the bird from the air and then squeezes it to death before eating it.

Colourful frogs can be orange, red, or green. Their bright colours let everybody know where they are. The bright colour warns other animals that the frog is poisonous, so they stay away. These tiny frogs are very poisonous! One frog has enough poison to kill 100 people.

The colours of the rainforest are beautiful to us, but to the animals they are very important. They help the animals survive.

Radio has perhaps done as much as any other communication tool. Things of the world can be reported to people everywhere a few seconds after they happened. Travelers in out-of-the-way places, ships at sea, and even astronauts round the earth are able to keep in touch with each other by radio.

Television is another important invention. It lets us see as well as hear the actor. Since it was invented, TV has done a great deal in the life of people everywhere. Many programs are now televised on TV.

Perhaps the most modern invention is “Telstar”, a “star” moving round the earth. It makes it possible for the people all over the world to be closer than ever before. 文章大意:本文讲述了人口增加,需要更多的蛋白质。饲养家畜对环境有害,因此科学家认为,人类可以吃昆虫。它们也有很多蛋白质,健康的脂肪和维生素。而且,它们对环境伤害不大。

4 . What kind of meat do you usually eat? Most of us eat chicken, pork or beef. But as the world’s population grows, more people will need protein. There won’t be enough meat for everyone. And raising more livestock (牲畜) will harm the environment. How can we solve this problem?

Scientists think that humans could eat more insects instead. Insects are healthy and nutritious. They have a lot of protein, healthy fats and vitamins. More importantly, they are less harmful to the environment. Farmers don’t need to clear forests to raise them. And raising insects will make fewer greenhouse gas emissions (排放) than raising cows.

Many scientists and food companies are trying to make food out of insects. For example, Australian scientists are making sausage out of maggots (蛆). In places like Paris and Mexico, you can find insect-based foods, such as fried flies and cricket (蟋蟀) soup.

Although you may think eating insects is gross, there are at least 2 billion people around the world who eat them, according to The Washington Post.

What if someone really hates eating insects?

• Farmers might feed chicken with insects instead of expensive fish or soybean meal.

• Food companies might make insect food in which insects cannot be seen. For example, crickets could be used to make flour.

1. Scientists have suggested eating insects because ________.

Some may have lunch or dinner together. Others may hang out or go to the movies with friends on this special day. These are popular among all age groups from teenagers to old people.

7 . If you spend some time in an English-speaking country, you might hear the term “etiquette”. It means normal and polite social behavior. This may seem like a difficult word at first, but it can be very useful to understand.

Etiquette is not the same in every culture or in every situation. (1)For example, standing very close to the person you are talking with is quite common in some Asian countries. However, if you do this in Europe, some people might feel uncomfortable. Even in China, we all know that etiquette is not the same in all situations. Perhaps we think that talking loudly in our own homes fine, but there are other places where talking loudly is not allowed. For example, most people would agree that talking loudly in a library, a museum or a movie theater is impolite. Even if you are with your friends, it is better to keep your voice down in public places.

If we see someone breaking the rules of etiquette, we may politely give them some suggestions. One of the most polite ways is to ask someone, “Would you mind doing this” or “Would you mind not doing that”. People don’t usually like to be criticized, so we have to be careful how we do this.

(2)Although rules etiquette can often be different, some rules are the same almost everywhere in the world_For example, dropping litter is almost never allowed. If you see someone you know doing this, you can ask him, “Would you mind picking it up?”

The essays that truly stand out(脱颖而出) are personal. These are pieces of writing that put your life at the center. It’s better to describe a single life experience or memory than to try to talk about your whole life story.

There are six questions to choose from, and you have to choose one of them to write about. Be daring(大胆的) when making your choice.

Stay true to your voice.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了亚洲大城市的购物中心是全年都繁忙的地方,展示了亚洲惊人的经济增长和现代化。

10 . Christmas is a time for shopping. But I think those of us who live in large cities in Asia would be cheating ourselves if we said this is the only time we are busy shopping. No, from Bangkok to Singapore, from Shanghai to Manila.

Shopping centers are good. They show Asia’s surprising economic(经济的) growth, and how far we have come in such a short time. For many of the older generation who can remember a time when everyone lived in villages and there was no running water, choice, luxury(豪华).

Nowadays, it seems our usual activities happen in the centre—it’s where we shop, eat, meet our friends or just generally walk around.

Further more, we have come to regard shopping centers as important landmarks or tourist attractions(吸引). Whole generations of Asians are growing up to think that, the shopping center is the most natural place to be.

My idea about shopping centers is not that they are often big buildings that look quite different from other parts in a city, or that they promote(促进) shopping at a time when our planet can hardly afford it. My main idea about centers is that they don’t really seem to make us happy. The large advertisements outside the stores could make us think that if we only had this pair of jeans, then we could feel more successful. But once we buy something, we only want to buy something more—as everyone already knows.

Shopping centers, even though they try to look as welcoming as possible, can be unkind places. To make us buy, or that everyone else has something we do not yet own. We must want to surpass others or at the very least to keep up. How can this thought always trying to be cool bring us true joy?

The saddest thing is that the modern centre has stopped us from many beautiful, necessary and important activities. We have no one to blame(责怪)but ourselves. Instead of shopping, visiting a nearby waterfall, going to the beach, taking a long walk, playing a sport.

Every time we have a spare piece of land, all we can think of building on it is yet another centre. Perhaps instead, we should be building libraries, museums, sports halls, parks—the list is endless. We might even consider leaving that land alone. This is something that the centre may have caused us to forget—in order to be happy, we must create as well as consume(消费).

1. What is the writer’s attitude towards shopping centers?
A.He likes them very much.B.He doesn’t like them at all.
C.He likes them only a little.D.He doesn’t like all of them.
2. Why do more and more shopping centers appear in some Asian countries?
A.Because economy in the world develops very fast.
B.Because shopping centers have attracted tourists all over the world.
C.Because people go shopping in large shopping centers all year round.
D.Because shopping centers have become an important part in everyone’s life.
3. What is the greatest disadvantage of shopping centers, according to the writer?
A.They seem to make us angry.
B.They lead us to buy more and more things.
C.They force us to give up many other activities.
D.They have us fall into endless competition with others.
4. Which of the following is not true?
A.It is very easy for us to find a shopping centre in a big city.
B.There are usually all kinds of services in a shopping center.
C.The government must be responsible for the writer’s sadness.
D.Besides shopping, there’re many other activities we can enjoy.
