1 . You need some bread and milk. But half an hour later, you leave the supermarket with a trolley of food. What games do supermarkets play to make us spend so much money?
The games usually start before you walk in. When we walk past the supermarket entrance. We can smell warm, fresh bread. That makes us want to eat and then buy lots of food, not just bread.
▲And, of course, a small basket would be fine, but most are trolleys. And of course a trolley is big and it looks poor and strange with just one or two products in it. So we may put lots of products into it. You see, supermarket trolleys are getting bigger.
What’s more, what about the music? Most supermarkets don’t play fast songs. Because they want you to spend more time and money there. And you won’t be in a hurry when the supermarket is busy. And be careful with queues at the checkouts. Sometimes, these are just to make you buy something from the checkout shelves next to you while you are waiting.
So, next time you go into a supermarket, can you come out just with the things you want? Think about the games!

We all know memory is necessary to success in studying. How to improve memory? One way might be walking backwards.
Walking backwards, whether doing it really or imagining it, can improve the brainpower in the short term. Researchers did an interesting memory test. 114 volunteers watched a video in which a woman had her bag stolen. Then they answered 20 questions about the information in the video. Ten minutes after watching the video, then they asked the volunteers to divide into three groups. The first two groups moved forwards or backwards 10 meters while the third group stayed still on the same point. The researchers found that the backwards-walking group got two more correct answers on average than the other two groups.
When we walk backwards, everything we learn becomes strange to us. “This forces the brain to think in a different way.” Christine Weber, the researcher from US, told Forbes. It almost always means that our brain needs to be more active and able to think quickly in the short time. Naturally, our short-term memory will improve a lot.
Not only improving our memory, walking backwards also help us keep fit. Compared to walking forward, backward walking puts less pressure and needs smaller movements from the knee joints so that there will be less pain in the knees. What’s more, it is more challenging. You should use muscles and movements that you probably hardly use, making it a perfect way to change your daily exercise for greater fitness. By making people put in more effort, it burns more fat and calories. However, be careful, it will let you get hurt if you have a sore neck.

3 . What do you usually do when you feel bad? Is there anything you can do to get over the feelings? Here are some steps you can follow.
1. Take deep breaths or count down numbers. Accept your feelings first. Taking deep breaths or slowly counting to 10 will help you calm down in a short time. | 2. Speak out how you feel and what you wish for. Tell your true feelings and wishes. Just speak them out. People will know what you want then, which is important for solving problems together. |
3. Ask for help. It is okay to ask for help when you don’t feel that you can solve the problem alone. Ask your parents or teachers for advice to find better ways.
4. Take the time to calm down. Sometimes you may still feel bad, even having tried each of the above steps. If so, it is better to walk away to do with those feelings. Several days later, you may not feel as strongly about what happened.
5. Look back before you look forward. After getting over the feelings, you can learn something from it. Think about the reasons and the ways you use. Next time, when you have the bad feeling again, you’ll do better. |
If you have more good ways to get out of bad feelings, please email us at magazine@kids. com. We are always looking forward to hearing from you.

NASA is ready to send six little satellites into space, but it will take about three years to reach space. Those satellites can be able to help scientists keep a closer eye on heavy storms, and they develop a task called TROPICS to send the satellites to space. Importantly, the satellites will help us make a big difference in watching coming heavy storms.
At the moment, NASA’s weather satellites can only check in on a storm every four to six hours. “So we’re missing a lot of what’s happening in the storm,” Bill Blackwell, at the MIT Lincoln Laboratory, said. However, the new set of six satellites will allow researchers to check in on a storm about every hour.
After sending the satellites, scientists will put them in a perfect place to watch the areas where most storms are born, from the center of America to the south of Australia. Each satellite is just under 0. 3 meters long with a powerful machine that’s about as big as a cup of coffee. The small machine can measure heat and light produced from O₂ and H₂O in the air, then the data will be sent to the Earth.
It will bring many advantages. First, the data measured by the TROPICS satellites will help researchers study better how a storm grows. They can even build a 3 D model of a storm developing with the help of satellites. Also, scientists will know when the storm will come and get people to safety as soon as possible. Just like last year, hundreds of people died because of Storm Ida coming overnight. It won’t happen anymore.
That makes it all more important to have more eyes over the sky. “The TROPICS team is super excited to send these satellites and get them running,” Bill Blackwell said in NASA statement.

5 . The Simpsons
When does The Simpsons come to an end? It is 34 seasons in and it shows no signs of slowing down. “I mentioned that there might be an ending where the last episode, the Simpsons would go back to the first episode, so that the whole series was a continuous loop. “The good thing is that the show runner Mr. Al Jean does not foresee this stress to end the show in the near future.

6 . Education is not just about going to school. it’s also about what you learn from your experiences outside of school. So family and community (社会) play a great role, too.
On January 13, the government gave a guideline (指导方针) to improve school-family-community cooperative (合作的) education mechanism (学校家庭社会协同育人机制). It clarifies the roles and responsibilities of school, family and community and how they work together to educate children.
“School-family-community cooperative education asks the three parts to well work together to help the all-round development of students,” Zhang Zhiyong, a teacher at Beijing Normal University, told China Education Daily.
According to the guideline, schools should play a leading role in cooperative education. They should deeply close communicate with parents to let them know about the student’s performance at school. They should also organize at least two activities each term to offer family education guidance to parents. Also, head teachers need to organize a home visit to each student at least once every year.
Parents also play a key role in family education. They should be encouraged to lead their kids to take part in different activities like volunteering, doing sports or getting job experience in their free time. The community, on the other hand, for example, should be free to school students.
Gao Wei, a 43-year-old mother of a 14-year-old from Beijing, was excited about the new guideline. “Improving cooperative education” between the school and parents is not a new thing. But the guideline brings clear advice to make it happen. With such support, they can learn more from real life.”

ChatGPT is a conversational AI language model. You can chat with ChatGPT by asking it questions and it will quickly answer them in human-like natural language based on its training.
> 2
The model was trained on many different Internet texts, allowing it to have knowledge on a wide range of topics, including history, sports, and much more.
> 3
According to Andreas Schleicher, an official from Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD), the chatbot will become a very powerful tool in the development of education. As a device, ChatGPT is going to make learning much more interesting and powerful.
> 4
However, New York City’s Department of Education announced a ban (禁令) on the wildly popular chatbot ChatGPT—which may help more students cheat (作弊)—from its schools’ devices and networks.
>What do professors and students think of ChatGPT?
A latest survey among educators and students shows as following:
72% of college professors are worried about its impact on cheating.
Over a third (34%) of all educators believe that ChatGPT should be banned in schools and universities.

D.You can get some examples from newspapers, magazines or TV shows, and let her know it’s really bad. |
E.Tell him that he has done something good to animals. If he takes the eggs home, how will mother feel when she can’t find them? On the other hand, what kind of birds are they? |
F.Say sorry to him. And try to repair it. Or you may give him your favourite toy car instead. Or buy a new one for him. |
9 . Imagine turning on the GPS and seeing an image of your car from above. As the car drives, the map follows along in real time, alerting you to any traffic, walkers, animals, or other things nearby. Routes and names of roads appear over the livestream. It’s like the map has come to life. The special map is called the live map.
This type of map isn’t available yet. But it could be soon. In 2014, the Worldview-3 satellite was sent into space. Even though it moves around Earth at more than 370 miles (600 km) away, it can catch images of objects on Earth that are just 10 inches (25 cm) across. For example, it can recognize a smartphone held in your hand. It can tell what types of cars are traveling down a road. But it can’t identify your face or read the cars’ license plate numbers... at least not openly.
According to some reports, some other US spy satellites can take even sharper images, with a resolution of up to around 4 inches (10 cm). But US law doesn’t allow making these super-sharp pictures public. But the idea that anybody might be able to spy on the entire Earth in such detail may seem uneasy. Ray Purdy of University College London told CNN that he was worried about what this could mean for privacy. “Most satellites are commercially owned, so if you have money you can buy that image. It means anyone can spy on anyone,” he said.
However, live and detailed maps of Earth’s surface could aid humanity in amazing ways. Satellite images can help professors follow storms as they form and record their paths. At high detail, live maps of a disaster area could quickly show the people in need of help as well as the safest routes in or out. Higher detail may make it possible to catch people who are fishing or hunting illegally. The images could also make it easier for farmers to watch over their crops.
Do you wish everyone could make use of high-detail live maps of Earth’s surface?

10 . It’s OK to say you’ve never heard of grime—unless you’re from the UK. That’s because this music was invented in the UK in the early 2000s.
To someone who’s not familiar with underground music, it’s easy to get confused* about hiphop and grime since they are both noisy. And many people didn’t try to tell them apart, until earlier this month when grime singers like Stormzy and J Hus led this year’s MOBO Awards—“Music of Black Origin”—nominations* in the UK.
Grime drew influence from UK electronic music and hiphop, and it mostly shows the thoughts of young people. But different from hiphop, grime singers sing in dialects* with strong accents*, making their songs special.
Lady Leshurr, known as the “Queen of Grime”, said that she once tried to hide her accent, as she didn’t want people to judge her. But one day, she realized that she didn’t need to change herself just to please others. And there’s no doubt that this is the most basic and important thing of grime music: be yourself.
“Also different from the hiphop style, which usually focuses on being rich, grime singers pay more attention to social issues* like the gap between the rich and poor.” Mykaell Riley, the director of the black music research unit told the BBC.
Although still quite young, grime seems to be loved by more and more people. In 2016, the English grime artist Skepta won the Mercury Prize with his album Konnichiwa, beating the famous rock music singers David Bowie and Radiohead.
However, no matter whether grime is one day accepted by the mainstream music world or not, one thing is for sure: in grime, singers always stay true to themselves.
1. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refers to ________.A.the rock | B.grime | C.hip-hop | D.electronic music |
A.Lady Leshurr | B.Radiohead | C.David Bowie | D.Mykaell Riley |
A.it is the most basic and important kind of music |
B.it shows the thoughts of young people and pleases others |
C.it has been accepted by the mainstream music world |
D.it is sung in dialects and focuses on social issues |
A.rock music is not popular any more | B.grime is still a quite young music type |
C.grime is getting more and more popular | D.grime singers always stay true to themselves |
