1 . As graduation season begins in June and July, graduates are leaving for different destinations(目的地) to celebrate the start of their lives. For graduation trips, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Shenzhen and Hangzhou are the top five most popular destinations in China. Thailand and the United States are popular among foreign destinations.
For the young people, going on trips and taking photos are great for them to keep their beautiful memory about graduation. According to the reports, the market scale(规模) of graduation tours has been beyond 15 billion yuan. Young people are good at using travel apps to get more information and they make decisions quite quickly. It’s possible that just because of a song, a book, a movie, or a chat with someone, they may decide to take a trip somewhere.
Compared with people who were born in the 1980s, and usually like to plan before the trips carefully, the young people are freer and more casual. 56 percent of customers who were born after 1995 book hotels on the day then need to stay there. Beside, 1.12 percent of students buy plane tickets after they arrive at an airport. They care less about the price, and look for higher quality trips. Most trips include groups of two to five people.
Last year, students who had just finished their college entrance examinations loved visiting the Disneyland in Shanghai best, the report said. Students think Disneyland is full of fun and a good place to relax themselves.

2 . October 16 is World Food Day, which started in 1981. It is used to remind people not to waste food and to ask people to fight hunger (饥饿).
A large number of people in the world still don’t have enough food to eat. Food shortage is a big problem in the world. Right now, there are nearly 1, 000 million hungry people in the world according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Many children go to sleep hungrily, and 15 million of them die of hunger each year.
There are several reasons why there are food shortages. First, there have been more droughts (干旱) and floods recently. Also, a growing population makes feeding everyone more difficult.
Another big reason is food waste. Most people don’t realize how much food they throw away every day. On average (平均), a person throws away 50 kilos of food every year in Netherlands (荷兰). According to FAO, more than 1/3 of all food produced in the world goes to waste each year. The amount (数量) of food wasted in Europe in 2016 can feed 200 million people, and the food lost or wasted in Latin America in 2013 can feed 300 million.
So think twice next time when you want to throw away food. If you try to avoid wasting food, you can save some food and help hungry children. Only order as much food as you can eat at a restaurant. If you can’t finish all you order, take the rest home. Don’t be too picky (挑剔的) about food so that you don’t leave any on your plate. Check what food you have at home. Don’t buy or cook too much.

3 . Scientists in Britain and the United States have made a new kind of enzyme(酵素) that eats plastics (塑料). With its help, plastics can be turned into smaller parts and go away quickly. Scientists believe that, in the future, it could solve the problem of plastic pollution.
The enzyme is able to break down PET, a form of plastic. PET was first made in the 1940s and is now widely used to make plastic bottles. It can remain in the environment for many years and pollute large areas of land and water. So it has always been a headache to deal with the waste from PET and other plastics.
The researchers made the discovery while examining the structure(结构) of a natural enzyme in Japan. They found that the natural enzyme was helping to break down PET plastics. So, they decided to make small changes to the enzyme by adding some amino acids(氨基酸). It made the natural enzyme’s plastic-eating abilities work faster and better.
John McGeehan, one of the lead researchers, said, “We’ve made an improved enzyme. It’s better than the natural one. And we are trying to make more improvements to it.” He went on, “The enzyme is not harmful to humans or animals, and it is friendly to the environment. So we are considering putting it into wider use.”
The team is now trying to make the enzyme break down PET in large quantities(大量的). “We’ll see that the plastic pollution may be stopped with this technology. However, there is still a long way to go,” John McGeehan added.

It’s very important for everyone to sleep. We spend about one-third of our lives sleeping. So we should pay more attention to the quality of sleeping. However, a lot of people have trouble in sleeping. Some people even take sleeping pills to help them sleep better. In fact, taking sleeping pills is very dangerous. That’ s because sleeping pills are habit-forming(上瘾的). If you take them for several weeks, you will find it hard for you to stop taking them. Then, what should you do if you have trouble getting a good night’s sleep?
Doctors say that the best thing to do is to get out of bad habits. In other words, you can’t stay up too late at night and you should get up earlier in the morning. However, you may still have trouble sleeping if you have problems or something else on your mind. Then it’s time for you to do some exercise to relax your tense muscles(紧绷的肌肉). If relaxing your body can’t help you, try to write down your worries on your mind. If you like listening to music, you can choose some music that is quiet and gentle. We are often told to pay attention to what our mothers tell us. Scientists have found that our brains greatly prefer the voices of our own mothers.
Scientists at Stanford University recently studied this. They scanned (扫描) children’s brains while they were listening to different sounds, including their mothers’ voices. They found that 97 percent of the time, children could recognize (识别) their mothers’ voices at once.
Hearing their mothers’ voices makes children’s brains more active. We usually just use one part of our brains to deal with sounds when we hear something. But when we hear our mothers’ voices, many parts of the brain start to work as well.
Why do we reply so strongly to our mothers’ voices? On one hand, when we are still in the womb (子宫) before we’re born, we hear our mothers talking. This makes us feel comfortable. On the other hand, mothers teach us talk and social skills by repeating words again and again. This way, when mother’s sound is heard again, more attention is paid to it.
Some sounds are necessary for our life and they bring us pleasure. But mothers’ voices are different and they make us feel comfortable. We will feel very relaxed when we hear our own mothers’ voices.

I can’t wait to introduce my idol(偶像)to you. She is Li Ziqi, a short video creator, who was born in Sichuan in 1990. She started making videos in 2015. Before that, she did many low—level jobs and lived a hard life. But now she is very popular and has more than 20 million followers on Weibo. Many people like her because of her positive energy(正能量).
I like Li for many of her good qualities. Firstly, she is patient and always able to find the beauty in everyday life. For example, she once wanted to take a perfect picture of snow. She spent nearly eight hours in the heavy snow and pressed the shutter(快门)of her camera hundreds of times until she got the picture she wanted. Secondly, although Li has been faced with many difficulties, she has never stopped working hard for a brighter future. What’s more, she is a filial granddaughter, which has deeply touched me. She started cooking with her grandfather at a very young age. And after hearing that her grandmother was ill, she hurried back to her hometown in the countryside without any hesitation. While she was there, she took good care of her grandmother every day and step by step, her grandmother became fit and well again.
An idol plays an important role in our lives. After learning about Li’s life, I have learned to find the beauty in my daily life and to show my love for my parents and grandparents. I hope you can also learn a lot from Li and your own idol.
