1 . We all need cash(现金)in order to live our lives. However, something called digital currency is slowly taking the place of cash. A currency is kind of money. Usually, we use currency when we talk about a country’s money. If something is digital, it only exists(存在)on a computer. So “digital currency” means money that only exists on computers.
Lots of people have digital currency accounts(账户). They use a credit card(信用卡)to change their real money into digital money, and then the money goes into the digital currency account. A lot of people wonder, “Why in the world should I change my real money into digital currency? ”This is a fair question, but there’s a good answer. If you want to buy something online, then you usually have to use digital currency. For example, if you’re in China and you want to buy something in Canada, then you’ll have to pay with the digital currency.
Many people still don’t believe in digital currency. Some people think that if they can’t hold their money in their hand, then it doesn’t seem real. These people don’t feel comfortable when they see numbers on a computer screen. The computer tells them that their money is safe but these people don’t really feel safe. Another problem is security (安全)There are hackers all over the world. A hacker is a person who steals(盗取)computer information. If a hacker gets the password of your digital currency account, he or she can steal your money.
You have to decide whether or not you believe in this new invention (发明)Just remember one thing:If you want to buy something online, then you probably won’t have a choice. You’ll have to use digital currency.

Chicken eggs are just thin shells(壳) made of mineral(矿物), but you may be surprised how strong they are: What you need: *Four eggs *A bowl *A pen *Scissors or a knife *A piece of paper *Some books What to do: STEP 1: Use the scissors or knife to break a hole in the small end of each egg. Empty out what’s inside into the bowl. Wash and dry the shells. STEP 2: Draw a fine line around the widest part of each egg. Break away the shell between the line and the hole slowly. STEP 3: Put shells in a square at the four corners of the piece of paper, with the round end of the egg on top. STEP 4: Place books gently onto the four egg shells one after another, and see how many books you can add before the egg shells break down! What happened: The strength of an eggshell lies in its shape. It’s like a 3D arch(拱形) or dome(穹顶圆屋顶), which is one of the strongest shapes. The shape of the eggshell spreads pressure all over the whole egg, rather than at one point. In fact, the shape of the eggshell is seen in many types of architecture, including doorways and large windows. The strong walls of the shell will support the weak point. At right conditions, the thin eggshell can even hold up 20 kg of weight! |

Lots of animals sleep for a very long time in winter—like frogs, bears, bees, ants and snakes!
In the fall, the bear eats lots of fruits and fish to last a long time. It makes a bed of leaves and twigs(树枝), then curls up in a ball and falls asleep. Its breathing(呼吸)becomes slow, and its heart beats a lot slower, too!

8 . In 79 AD, the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, in southern Italy, was broken by a volcanic eruption (火山喷发). Many of its buildings were buried. To study the life in Pompeii before the eruption, some researchers have done their best to show it by using virtual reality (VR虚拟现实) technology.
The technology allows users to step inside an ancient house and visit it as its owner would have. Also, it helps researchers better understand how ancient Roman buildings were designed.
Researchers collected information by drones (无人机). And they used the information to create a 3D computer model of the ancient home known as the House of Greek Epigrams. They then put the model into a video game engine called Unity to make a VR model. Later, the researchers asked volunteers to take a virtual tour of the house in both summer and winter light. By using eye-tracking technology, researchers followed the eye movements of the volunteers. They recorded exactly which areas volunteers looked at and for how long. From this, researchers could see what areas drew the most attention.
This study has shown that it is Possible to collect and use information from the experience in a virtual Pompeian house. Its findings may greatly help future studies and offer people a better visiting experience in the Roman bouse. Next, researchers hope to recreate what ancient Romans heard and even smelled. In that way, they’re bringing Pompeii—a town frozen by time—back to life.

Let’s face it: Not many students love doing homework. But like it or not, homework is part of life for most kids in the Unite States. A recent survey has shown that students in different grades almost need to spend about five hours each week doing homework.
Some school officials (校方) argue that homework is important because it helps students remember what they learn in class. Others point out that it helps kids develop good study habits. Also, some parents say homework helps them discover whether or not their kids are falling behind.
But many schools are rethinking homework. Some have cut down the everyday homework, and others no longer allow weekend homework. What’s more, some have eliminated (取消) homework totally. Why? Many parents and teachers worry that too much homework makes kids stressed. Besides, some studies have shown that homework doesn’t actually help students do better in tests.
Here’s what two of our student readers think.

10 . If you live in a city, rodents (啮齿动物) are thought of as small animals, like rats, mice, and squirrels. Rodents, in fact, can be much bigger. The marmots (土拨鼠) can weigh up to seven kilograms, and one of the most familiar kind is the groundhog.
![](https://img.xkw.com/dksih/QBM/2022/6/12/2999721967386624/3046717543661568/STEM/8e4142bcaa494987bd1269f4639c3029.png?resizew=106)
The groundhog can be found in Canada and the eastern United States. In those two countries, this animal has its own special day: Groundhog Day. Held on February 2, this festival comes from German folk story about weather prediction. It’s said that when a groundhog puts its head out of its hole on this day, if it sees its shadow (影子), then winter will last for six more weeks. However, if it does not see its shadow, then spring is right around the corner. Of course, this isn’t the most correct way to predict weather patterns. It is a very popular holiday, but it is not taken very seriously. Everyone knows it is more about having fun.
Besides, groundhogs are considered by most people to be pests (害兽). Groundhogs are mainly herbivores (草食动物) and will eat almost anything that comes out of the ground, including the produce from people’s gardens. If that weren’t troublesome enough, they love to dig as well and are quite skilled at it. Unfortunately, their digging may destroy fields, farms, and the grounds of homes. You may think they are cute in photos, but these aren’t animals you would want around your home.
