文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。主要报道的是国际奥委会主席宣布2024年巴黎奥运会将把霹雳舞列为奥运会的比赛项目,同时介绍了这一举措的原因和霹雳舞的相关知识。

1 . It’s time for people to pick up their boom boxes and dust off their sneakers. Breaking, or competitive break dancing, is going for the gold.

On Dec 7, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that breaking would be an Olympic sport at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. It will be the latest modern sport to be added to the Games. IOC President Thomas Bach said that the new addition of breaking could help the Olympics event be “more youthful”. “We had a clear priority, and this was to introduce sports particularly popular among the younger generation,” Bach said. “And also to take into consideration the urbanization of sport.”

Breaking was originally part of early hip-hop culture in New York in the 1970s. In the decades since, it has spread globally, enjoying huge popularity beyond the US and particularly across Europe and Asia. Though breaking is often categorized as a style of street dance, it more easily lends itself to the field of sports than other styles for the competitive nature.

“Back in the Bronx in New York, when it first started, it was always neighborhoods of kids just battling each other,” 26-year-old break-dancer Victor Montalvo told USA Today. “That’s how they did it back in the day.” “Breaking competitions typically consist of one-on-one battles in which one competitor challenges his or her rival with different moves and the other responds. It’s a sport/art just as physically demanding as high-intensity dancing and acrobatics”, Montalvo added.

But as an art, breaking also features coordination and creativity. Some combinations of moves can be practiced, but much of a round is improvised. Combining vitality and creativity, breaking is accepted by young dancers across the world who are motivated by the prospect of representing their countries at the world’s biggest sporting event.

1. What does the underlined words “the gold” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.golden color.B.the gold medal.
C.big wealth.D.great importance.
2. Why does the author mention the dancing in New York in Paragraph 4?
A.To show breaking is loved by neighborhoods’ kids.
B.To explain why breaking is more like a sport.
C.To prove breaking has a long history.
D.To show Bronx is the birthplace of breaking.
3. What does the underlined word “improvised” mean in the last paragraph?
A.without any preparation.B.physically challenging.
C.popular among the youth.D.fierce and competitive.
4. What’s the purpose of the text?
A.To stress the importance of breaking.
B.To introduce a new Olympic event — breaking.
C.To throw light on the rules of breaking.
D.To make a brief historical review of breaking.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章谈论的是运动能够减缓衰老。专家说,锻炼是“我们拥有的最有希望的工具”,可以让我们在晚年保持健康。

4 . More scientists are researching cellular senescence (细胞衰老) — a state in which cells no longer divide. Senescent cells, which buildup in older bodies, have something to do with age-related conditions such as dementia (痴呆) disease.

Scientists are researching drugs that treat senescent cells. But the most promising tool against the bad influences of senescent cells, experts say, is exercise.

Today, LeBrasseur, who directs a center on aging at Mayo, says exercise is “the most promising tool that we have” for good health in late life, and that its power spreads to our cells. Research suggests exercise prevents the build-up of senescent cells, helping the immune system (免疫系统) clear them and fight the cell damage that can affect (影响) aging.

Last year, LeBrasseur led a study that provided the first sign in humans that exercise greatly affected senescence. It cut signs in the bloodstream of the influences of senescent cells in the body. After a 12-week exercise program, researchers found that older adults had cut signs of senescence and improved body strength, physical ability and reported health. A recent study collect seven more facts — in animals and humans — for exercise as a treatment to fight against senescence cells.

While such studies are not well-known outside scientific circles, many older adults connect exercise with youthfulness. Farmer Mike Gale, 81, put in a track and field throwing circle on his large farm in California. He and some of his friends throw the discus and use other exercise equipment. “I’d like to be competing in my 90s,” Gale says. “Why not?” 95-year-old Richard Soller says exercise keeps him fit enough to deal with what comes his way — including the discovery that his wife of 62 years had developed dementia. The two sometimes walk the streets of their neighborhood together, holding hands. “Do as much as you can,” he says. “That should be the goal for anyone to stay healthy.”

1. What do we know about Le Brasseur?
A.He discovered the cause of aging.B.He developed drugs to treat aging.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了英国的煎饼比赛传统,介绍了其比赛规则、比赛人员和比赛目的等情况。

6 . The UK has many strange traditions.    1    This tradition comes Shrove Tuesday, or, as many like to call it, Pancake (薄饼) Day. The day falls on the last Tuesday of February this year.

2    As contestants (参赛者) run, they have to toss the pancake in the air so that it flips and lands back in the pan on the other side. The winner is the first to reach the finish line, although they should also be careful to make sure that the pancake is complete and that it hasn’t broken along the way.

One of the most famous pancake races is the Rehab Parliamentary Pancake Race. This takes place on the morning of Shrove Tuesday in London, outside the Houses of Parliament.    3    One team is made up of Members of Parliament, and the other is made up of journalists. Most of them take part in the race wearing their work suits! The race is shown on the news and is covered on TV all around the world.    4    It raises awareness for the charity Rehab, which works with people with disabilities and others who suffer from social exclusion in the UK.

Another important aspect of the race is the official starter.    5    This is seen as an important role and is usually given to a British news presenter. But whoever is chosen usually has a hard time trying to control the race—the MPs are known for cheating every year!

A.One of those is pancake racing.
B.The race is a competition between two teams.
C.That is the person chosen to announce the start of the race.
D.Rome schools or businesses hold special Pancake Day events.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要讲述了从小进行户外活动可以帮助孩子养成终生的健康习惯。但不要指望孩子们能理解这些事情。所以父母可以做一些事情来帮助不活跃的孩子爱上体育活动。

7 . All parents know exercise is important for children: It can lower heart risks, control weight and help kids do better in school. Scientists have also proved that outdoor activities at an early age can help children form healthy habits for life. But don’t expect kids to understand about those things. Some kids just aren’t into exercise, but that shouldn’t mean they have to be attracted to the TV. So parents could do something to help inactive kids fall in love with physical activity.

If parents sit in front of the TV every night, kids aren’t likely to respect restrictions (限制) you set on their screen time either. So check your own behavior and serve as a role model by putting physical activity into your everyday life. Walk instead of driving if possible. Regularly join in activities that you enjoy and let your kids see how much you enjoy them. In this way, they may “do as the Romans do”. Make sure that children’s fitness is included in the family plans as well as school, work and shopping. Then you and your children are more likely to stick to an exercise plan. And your children will begin to expect that Sunday morning usually means a hike ride, and on a couple of nights after dinner the family takes a light walk through the neighborhood.

Children who aren’t naturally good at physical activity may be worried about their lack of physical skills and even fear public failure. They need all the support and encouragement from parents. Negative comments don’t work and will only make them feel bad. Remember, fix on the effort — choosing to be active or trying to improve a skill — rather than the result.

1. What’s the second paragraph mainly about ?
A.How parents can lead children to exercise.B.Why children should enjoy exercise.
C.What activity parents can join in.D.When parents can watch TV.
2. Which is not helpful for children to enjoy physical activity ?
A.Good examples set by parents for children.B.A family routine of exercise.
C.Support and encouragement from parents.D.Negative comments from parents.
3. What does the text tell us ?
A.It is the result that always comes first.
B.Kids can choose either exercise or the TV.
C.Exercise is necessary for healthy development.
D.Children having few physical skills should be punished.
4. How can we describe the author’s attitude to children’s enjoying exercise?
A.Doubtful.B.Supportive.C.Opposed.D.Unconcerned.
5. From which is the text probably taken ?
A.An advertisement.B.A news report.C.A magazine.D.A science book.

8 . Dragon boating is a team sport that has its roots in ancient China. The boats are decorated with a dragon head and tail. In recent years, cancer survivor groups have got involved in the sport to help make friends and help rebuild their lives.

On a recent Saturday morning, a group of 20 women were on a boat in the Anacostia River in Washington DC. They moved their paddles (船桨) in rhythm with the call of a coach. The women belong to the dragon boat team GoPink!DC, which trains weekly. It also races against other breast cancer survivor teams in the Dragon Boat Festival. As a result, GoPink!DC won medals in this Washington dragon boat festival.

Lydia Collins joined the team five years ago after finding out she had breast cancer. “I was told by my doctor that I developed breast cancer. I was depressed because of my illness — I lost all interest in life and wouldn’t even get out of bed to eat. But now I love the team spirit. I just love everything about it. It is like a floating support group on the water.” The paddlers are breast cancer survivors and their supporters.

Annette Rothemel helped set up the group in 2006. She is a researcher of the National Institutes of Health as well as a breast cancer survivor. “It is sort of an easy entry sport because on the same boat people at different levels can be doing the same sport.” But Ms Rothemel says dragon boating can be physically demanding, especially for someone who is sick and getting treatment for cancer.

“It’s hard but I think you have to challenge yourself in life. This is something I look forward to. I get to be out here with my sisters and supporters that understand what I’m suffering and help motivate me. So it makes me stronger and it makes me feel better.” another cancer survivor Rhonda Hartzel said.

Annette Rothemel says the cancer survivors feel a sense of sisterhood and share good times when they paddle together. She says both feelings are treasured by the team.
