文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。55岁的农民沃克是参赛者中年龄最大的,在今年的1000公里草原赛跑——蒙古德比中获得第三名。文章对此进行了报道。

1 . Walker, a farmer, at 55, was the oldest of the competitors and finished third in this year’s 1,000 km race across the grassland — The Mongol Derby.

The Mongol Derby, described by the organizers, as the world’s toughest horse endurance (耐力) race, began in 2009 as an event held every year but was cancelled in 2021 and 2022. Competitors race between checkpoints 35 km apart, where they change horses. They spend nights at one of 28 stations, set up their own camp or enjoy the hospitality (好客) of friendly Mongolian families.

Walker was an hour ahead of his rivals (对手) as the race entered its eighth day but dealt with a time punishment because his horse had a high heart rate during one of the regular checks which make sure that the animals were healthy. “I was in the lead for a long time but I had a bad vet check,” Walker said. “They check the heart rate of your horse to see if it is above 56 beats per minute. I picked a horse that had a bit of a problem.”

Walker said he had gone to Mongolia to “give it a go” but realized that he stood a chance of winning after teaming up with Patrick Heffron, a competitor from Ireland. “The horses are quite wild. I got bucked (颠) off three times. I fell off in a hole,” he said. “You’re going along and you suddenly disappear. You have to hang on to your horse for dear life or it goes off.”

Heffron met Walker as they went out for the race. He said it was important to form a team, mainly because falling off alone means that there is no one to help you recover your horse. “It’s also a bloody long way to talk to yourself,” Heffron said, “Neither of us had goals to win this race in advance but we realized: ‘We’re in front.’ So we pushed.”

1. What can we learn about the Mongol Derby?
A.It provides accommodations in hotels.
B.It allows competitors to change horses.
C.It requires competitors be young and strong.
D.It has been held every two years since 2021.
2. Why was Walker behind his rivals at last?
A.His horse was in poor condition.
B.He was punished for breaking rules.
C.He failed to finish the race in given time.
D.He got injured when he fell off the horse.
3. Which of the following best describes Walker?
A.Creative.B.Confident.
C.Warm-hearted.D.Strong-willed.
4. What does the story tell us?
A.Success is hard won.B.Practice makes perfect.
C.Many hands make light work.D.Everything comes to those who wait.

2 . Physical education, or PE, isn’t required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn’t offered for some different reasons. But should high school students have physical education? The answer is certainly “yes”.

High school isn’t that easy. Many students are under a lot of stress. Stress can be harmful to a student’s study and life. Doing sports can help them deal with stress better, helping them live a happier life at school.

Not doing sports increases teens’ risk of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes toward treating medical conditions that can be hindered by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者在一个叫做I enjoy exercise的CD的鼓舞下,从过去不喜欢运动到现在每天都会运动。作者认为振奋人心的话语真地能产生很大的影响。

3 . Years ago, I could not stick to exercising until I bought a CD called I Enjoy Exercise. I listened to it every day. I bought the CD because I wanted to run in a race and hopefully win!

I had assured my 10-year-old son Todd that I would run in a race with him. Unfortunately, however, when that race came, his left leg was hurt in a car accident. Without him running with me, although I took part in that race, I didn’t do quite well in it.

While Todd couldn’t run together with me because of his injury (受伤), he never forgot the promise I made for him. He was always asking me whether I would keep my promise when he recovered in the future. So I decided I was going to train and go all out to win the next race. What I needed was motivation (动力). It happened that one of my friends mentioned the CD which he liked very much, saying that he got a lot from the music in it when feeling down. So I bought it and listened to it while exercising every day.

What happened to my thinking was amazing as I listened to it daily. I started to think about the repeated words on the CD — “I enjoy exercise”. Instead of dreading exercise, I was thinking, “I enjoy exercise.”

I found out how important words are that we play in our minds every day. I went from a person who seldom exercised to someone who started to exercise daily. Just think how our lives will improve if we reflect on the uplifting words of the famous works. I have found the positive messages have greatly inspired me and then changed my life.

How did I do in that race, you might be thinking? I actually became the champion in my age group.

A.She would like to win the race.
B.She had a good talent for running.
C.Her son got injured in a car accident.
D.Her son was unwilling to run with her.
2. How did the author get the motivation for training?
A.By recalling some inspiring stories.
B.By listening to the CD while running.
C.By getting timely help from her friend.
D.By forcing herself into keeping running.
3. What does the underlined word “dreading” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Fearing.B.Improving.
C.Preferring.D.Taking.
4. What message does the author intend to deliver to us?
A.It’s important to avoid injury while running.
B.The uplifting words make a difference to us.
C.Parents should get along well with children.
D.We can build up our bodies by regular exercise.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I had been swimming competitively for five years but after such a long time, I was ready to quit. I was often the only African American at the swimming competitions and our team couldn’t afford good uniforms. However, my number-one reason for wanting to quit was that I kept receiving “Honorable Mentions (荣誉奖)”. Any athlete knows that you don’t want to have a bookshelf full of “Honorable Mentions”, which you get just because you showed up.

One summer’s day, the day before a big swim meeting, I decided to tell my grandma that I was quitting the swim team. When I told her, she looked me in the eye and said, “Baby, remember these words ‘Quitters never win and winners never quit.’ Your grandmother didn’t raise losers or quitters. You go to that meeting tomorrow, and you swim like you are a grandchild of mine, you hear?” I was too afraid to say anything but “Yes, ma’am.”

The next day we arrived at the swim meeting late, missing my group of swimmers in the 15/16 age group. My coach insisted I should be allowed to swim with the older group. I knew she expected me to take part.

As I mounted the board, all the other girls looked at me. I quickly noticed that these girls were all here to do just one thing — beat me. All of a sudden, my grandma’s words rang in my head, “Quitters never win and winners never quit. You swim like you are a grandchild of mine.” “Yes, Grandma, I will swim like I am a grandchild of yours,” I said to myself.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了运动类型的选择与个人性格特点之间的联系。

5 . People do physical exercise as part of their healthy lifestyle to get stronger and healthier.

There are three basic modes of physical exercise: flexibility exercise helps the human body in general or its part in particular to be able to reach farther and bend better; aerobic exercise helps the body work hard for a long time; anaerobic exercise makes the arms and legs stronger.

It has long been known that exercise is not only good for your body, but also for your mind. According to researchers, gymnasts are more likely to be emotionally stable, football players the most outgoing and swimmers the happiest.

The psychological study, which was carried out by experts, also revealed that sports can also offer clues to a person’s attitude to charity, reading habits and even their voting intentions. Boxers, for example, are most likely to focus on material possessions in life. Meanwhile, runners tend to be outgoing people who love being the centre of attention. Walkers, a group that includes those who enjoy wandering and cross-country races, are least concerned about other people and like doing things by themselves without interruption from others. Those who play chess are confident when they face challenges and trouble. Those who swim tend to be tidy and charitable. However, according to Mind Lab, 61 percent of adults are fond of helping others regardless of their choice of sports.

The results from this study also show that no matter what kind of person you are, there is the right kind of exercise for you.

1. Which of the following sports belongs to flexibility exercise?
A.Running.B.Swimming.C.Football.D.Gymnastics.
2. What can we learn from the text?
A.Walkers enjoy loneliness in their lives.
B.Boxers tend to ignore wealth in life.
C.Runners have great power of concentration.
D.Chess players like challenging other people.

A.To make a contrast.B.To draw a comparison.

4. What is the best title for the text?
A.How can you choose suitable sports?
B.What kind of sports can benefit you most?
