1 . Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for your question. As people often say, any exercise is better than none, but long-distance running in particular has a lot of benefits.

It is a great sport for beginners — you do not need a gym membership or any special equipment. Just a pair of good running shoes will do. Then keep it up. There is also no better way to know yourself and to see what you are capable of.

You are also somebody who worries about getting sick. Running will help you get fit and prevent diseases. It will give you good upper and lower body strength. Like any exercise, running increases the flow of blood and oxygen to your brain. It makes your heart stronger and allows more blood to flow around your body. It also strengthens your immune system and reduces the risk of serious health problems, as well as more common illnesses like colds. Besides, anybody who is feeling down can go for a run to cheer themselves up. Even a thirty-minute run will provide relief from aches or tension that you may be suffering due to stress.

If you’re new to running, here is some advice for you. It is important to warm up and cool down properly before and after running, so you do not hurt yourself. A warm-up gets your body blood flowing faster and prepares your body before you exercise. After a long run, you should jog slowly for ten minutes, then walk for five minutes. Such kind of warm down relaxes your body after exercise.

For more guidelines on running, click here. I hope this will help.

Best regards,

Dr. Martin

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了有组织的体育运动对学生是有益的。

3 . Over the past few decades, children have been taking part less in free play and more in organized sports. While doing organized sports has both social and physical benefits for young children, worries about safety and benefits increase.

Though most children are naturally likely to be physically active, not all kids are willing to get up and move. Soccer coach Joseph Luxbacher says, “Every kid has the possibility of being a good sportsman in different kinds of sports. Participating (参加) in organized sports such as the school soccer team introduces direction to children’s physical activities. Following a team schedule gives kids a set time and place to exercise. As a result, kids can be safe from accidents and be protected against physical harm.”

What’s more, participating in organized sports gives children time to communicate with others and shows good sportsmanship. For young children who may still be very self-centered, participating in team, sports teach them to think about the group and encourages them to be glad about the success of their teammates. Kids can also benefit from spending time with their coach and having a chance to develop a positive (良好的) relationship with an adult other than their parents, especially if the coach is both skilled and devoted (全心全意的) to being a positive instructor.

Playing organized sports requires a lot of time for practice and games, so it would seem that this could influence students’ study. Actually it can ameliorate students’ test performance. That’s because to play organized sports well, players have to memorize information, do repetitive actions, and learn from teammates. All these types of learning skills can make students score higher.

Since stress can come from many different sources — parents, coaches, teammates or themselves — many children who participate in organized sports feel pressured to succeed. While a little stress can be helpful in leading children to perform with increased focus and strength, too much stress will leave young kids feeling very tired. Organized sports are more likely to put the right amount of pressure on them.

1. What can we learn from Joseph Luxbacher’s words?
A.Organized sports can help develop kids’ talents.
B.Most children prefer free play to organized sports.
C.Most children have a set time and place to exercise.
D.Organized sports can better protect kids from injuries.
2. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.Ways to attract kids to organized sports.
B.Standards of a good organized sports coach.
C.Social skills developed by playing organized sports.
D.Positive parent-child relationships built by doing sports.
3. What does the underlined word “ ameliorate” mean in paragraph 4?
A.Score.B.Record.C.Check.D.Improve.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.How organized sports can benefit childrenB.How to coach children in organized sports
C.How organized sports put pressure on childrenD.How to be a good teammate in organized sports

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。文章主要讲述美国篮球运动员Ben Simmons向中国西南部贵州省马场镇捐赠了一个篮球场,通过对篮球这项运动的热爱将大洋两岸的人们联系起来。

4 . A few days ago, the Brooklyn Nets basketball player Ben Simmons donated a basketball court to Machang township in Southwest China’s Guizhou Province during a ceremony. Simmons has visited China several times since he was young. He has been deeply touched by the Chinese people’s warmth and friendly feelings toward him and their enthusiasm for basketball.

Impressed by the news that basketball competitions had been held in Guizhou at a village with their own “Village Basketball Association (VBA)”, Simmons decided to donate a basketball court to the village during the Chinese New Year Basketball Competition in January. After conducting a survey, he set up the basketball court in Machang township in Gui’an New Area in the hope that it would create more opportunities for young fans to play basketball.

In the mountainous village of Machang, there are no huge electronic screens or advertisements at basketball games, but they can still be thrilling thanks to local players’ love for the sport. These players later became a hit in China and even went viral (迅速传播). A recent final competition attracted 30, 000 viewers on site and more than 1 billion viewers online.

Comparatively, the NBA boasts the best players in the world, top-class basketball gyms and professionally made commercials, so its exciting games draw fans around the world. The NBA and the “VBA” are thousands of miles apart, but their games are equally striking, fueling thousands of fans’ enthusiasm. Both focus on a common interest of basketball fans in the U. S. and China and their shared pursuit of sports and a better life.

B.The local players can earn an amount of money by playing the game.
C.The players, professional skills make the local basketball games exciting.

A.To suggest the “VBA” should learn from the NBA.
B.To show the NBA is much more exciting than the “VBA”.
C.To express the NBA and the “VBA” have something in common.
D.To prove the rules of the “VBA” and the NBA are almost the same.

7 . Move over soccer, basketball and football, there’s a new competition sweeping Australia. It’s competitive bird calling. Yes, bird calling!

Scores of kids in New South Wales are spending their spare time practicing for the Bournda Bird Olympics, an event that aims at young bird-callers against each other to see who can deliver the clearest, most enthusiastic and most accurate bird call. The principal of the Bournda Environmental Education Centre, Doug Reckord, encourages the kids to listen to bird calls on YouTube to prepare for the event. The children also work on identifying birds by their beaks, claws and calls.

Surprisingly, the Bournda Bird Olympics isn’t Australia’s first competition with competitive bird calling. The first competition took place in Sydney in 1912. It was supported by the Gould League of Bird Lovers, a foundation that encouraged children to bird watch and learn about birds.

Even back then, New South Wales was the country’s bird calling leader. Students from the New South Wales region had access to much more bird sounds than city kids. They won the Dawson Memorial Shield for best bird calling six times between 1953 and 1962. Today, New South Wales is bringing back the bird calls. Led by the Bournda Environmental Education Centre, the Bournda Bird Olympics renewed in 2018. The event now features former bird calling champion, Bruce Chapman, as the “celebrity” judge.

When showtime finally arrives, three judges at the Bournda Bird Olympics rate people taking part on their enthusiasm, accuracy and clearness. The players can earn a maximum of three points in each type. Some 45 children took part in the 2022 event. The most popular bird call to imitate (模仿) was the kookaburra’s unique laugh. But the winner that year came from a girl copying a king parrot. Her call sounded so accurate that a king parrot in the trees actually called back to her.

1. What’s Doug Reckord’s attitude to bird calling?
A.Curious.B.Positive.C.Uncaring.D.Objective.
2. What is Gould League of Bird Lovers?
A.A project.B.A school club.C.A game.D.An organization.
3. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.The basic rules of bird calling.B.The bright future of bird calling.
C.New South Wales’ participation.D.New South Wales’ training.
4. Why did a girl’s imitation win the 2022 event?
A.It was true to life.B.It was the sweetest.
C.It was the most popular.D.It was full of enthusiasm.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Dave had loved basketball for as long as he could remember and he had never had a day without playing it. At primary school and junior high school he joined basketball clubs, attended training programs and watched basketball games, from which he learned the moves of the star players, wishing to play in a professional team like them and shine on the court.

Now as a senior high school student, however, his dream of becoming a professional player was dimming (变暗) because he was only of average height. He had to give up the hope of joining the school team. The guys on the school team were all tall boys who played matches and won honors for the school. They were like heroes. Dave watched them play and cheered them but he knew he would never be one of them.

Dave felt it a pity not to be tall enough, but this didn’t stop him from pouring his passion into basketball. He just played for the love of the sport. He played in the school gym with other boys or by himself every day, even during holidays and weekends, when it was open for two hours in the morning. He enjoyed every minute on the court making every effort to play better.

It was one Saturday morning. Dave was playing in the gym by himself, as all the other boys were busy with other weekend affairs. Then he noticed a tall boy approaching. It was Lankas. Everybody knows him as captain of the school basketball team. “Hi, Lankas,” Dave greeted him. “My name is Dave.” “Hi, Dave,” Lankas replied as he got closer. “Nice to see you here. Do you need an opponent to play against?” Dave was shocked, frozen right there, unable to believe his ears but somehow, he answered, “Why not?”
