1 . If you cut down on the time you spend sitting, you might live longer. New research shows that sitting less than three hours a day might extend your life by two years.

1     But modern lifestyles and office jobs rarely give us the chance to move around. Sitting is something we do all the time and everywhere. We sit while we're eating,we sit in the car and we sit while we are watching TV. And many of us sit for many hours at work. So on average,Americans report that they sit between four and a half to five hours a day.

Exercise is important. But so is not sitting.

You may exercise often. But it does not mean you can sit for the rest of your waking hours.     2     Even if you exercise for 30 minutes a day, what goes on in the other 23-and-a-half hours a day is also very important, according to a study on how sitting all day affects the length of life. It shows that cutting television time to less than two hours a day could add one point four years to life.

    3

Change is already coming to some offices, especially in the design of desks. A "standing desk" lets people stand while they work. Another new design is called the "treadmill(跑步机)desk". A treadmill is an exercise machine that lets you walk in one place. Even some U.S. schools are beginning to experiment with desks that are part bicycles to keep children moving.

Exercising while working.

4    They may have got five "standing desks" for their employees or a "treadmill desk". Some other companies may not buy one for everybody but they'll have a bank of these desks where people can go for an hour a day and answer their emails or talk on the phone. People are really trying to limit the amount of time spent sitting at the desk.

Suggestions for sitting less.

If you work in an office or have a sedentary(久坐不动的)job, scientists suggest a few simple changes. Get up from your desk as often as you can.     5     Instead of emailing colleagues, walk to their offices and talk directly. If you are sitting down reading this, stand up. Move your legs. Touch your toes,if you can. Do anything but sit.

All these activities may help you live longer.

A.Take walks at lunch time.
B.New desk designs are helping.
C.Such studies are a new area of study.
D.The human body is designed to move.
E.Mind your steps when going downstairs.
F.Avoiding being sedentary is also important.

2 . An increasing number of Chinese are jogging to get and stay fit. Most joggers will run alone, but some will jog with friends or even coaches.

The Beijing Olympic Forest Park is one of the most popular spots. It is packed with runners in the afternoon, usually after work, and at weekends.

Jogging after a whole day’s work can be a way to unwind. It is true for He Wenjun, whose workplace is right near the forest park. She discovered her athletic gift at the age of seven, when she began playing tennis. Then she turned to jogging, and she has persevered with it for 10 years. “I come to jog almost every day after work, whenever I have time. I think jogging is good for my health. And for me, a girl, it helps me to achieve to keep slim,” she said.

She says she prefers jogging alone, so she can focus better. She loves jogging, even during Beijing’s smoggy days. “If the smog is severe, I’ll hold off jogging for a while. But if I really want to get away from work, I’ll wear a mask, or just ignore the smog and go on jogging,” she said.

For those who are not so athletic, jogging also has its attractions.

Wu Houbin started roughly two years ago, when he was severely obese(病态肥胖的). Within two months, his weight dropped from 82 kilograms to 64 kilograms. The success helped him recover health, and he has made friends. “Jogging does not require speed, but perseverance. If you want to stick to the game, you need to take it as a task, a habit, and then eventually a hobby,” Wu said.

Jogging is beneficial to heart-lung function, and the skeletal system, but doctors say improper technique damages the joints, especially the knees and ankles. “Excessive jogging wears down the body, and harms one’s health. Poor technique harms the muscles and skeletons, and can cause secondary injuries. And, jogging in a bad environment can cause circulation problems,” said Lu Zhiyong, attending doctor, Sports Hospital, General Administration of Sports.

Dr. Lu has some tips for joggers, and those who are thinking of taking it up.

He says people should first evaluate(评估)their physical condition, to decide the amount and type of exercise, and jogging in the open air is better than running on a running machine. 5 . Running on the beach can certainly be a good thing. It’s definitely different from running on the pavement, a track or trails with soft surfaces.

For starters, sand can be a challenge because it has an uneven surface and constantly shifts under your feet. As you push off, you’re going to lose some of your energy as the sand moves. So, you’re not going to be able to push yourself forward as you are on a track or pavement. But this unevenness has an upside: It gives your body an extra workout, forcing you to engage muscles that don’t get as much use during runs on firm surfaces. For instance, your feet, ankles, lower back and the muscles around your hips might feel more painful and more tired than usual after a beach run just because the surface is constantly moving and changing step by step.

You also might feel painful afterward because beaches tend to slope(倾斜)downward, toward the water. If you’re going for a long run on the beach, you might notice that one side of your body — including your ankle, leg or knee — might feel more painful because you’re putting more pressure on it due to the slope.

Some beach runners tend to run barefoot. However, if you’re not used to barefoot running, start slowly and don’t run long distances at first. That’s because running barefoot uses different muscles compared with running with shoes, and it’s important to strengthen these muscles and adapt your feet. Moreover, because sand can be rough, you can get blisters(疱)pretty easily from running barefoot.

Despite these challenges, running on sand can be a smart choice for athletes because running on it can decrease the impact on their body during high-intensity workouts. This could potentially lead to reduced muscle damage and less pain. Women had less myoglobin(肌红蛋白) — a protein that can be a sign of muscle pain — in their blood after running on sand than they did after running on grass. This suggests running on softer ground surfaces, such as sand, may reduce muscle damage.

1. Why do starters have difficulty running on sand?
A.The smooth surface makes them fall over easily.
B.The moving surface makes them energetically costly.
C.The water surface puts more stress on their bodies.
D.The watery surface makes them wet through frequently.
2. Which of the following best explains “upside” underlined in Paragraph 2?
A.Advantage.B.Reason.
C.Expectation.D.Challenge.
3. What should you avoid if you want to try running barefoot on sand?
A.Starting slowly.B.Adjusting your feet.
C.Strengthening some muscles.D.Running long distances.
4. What’s the unique benefit of running on sand to women?
A.Reduced muscle damage.B.Less challenges.
C.Increased workouts.D.Less pain.

6 . As a high school senior, Kimmarie Pond had never even considered cycling to get fit. That changed after she participated (参加) in Soul-Cycle’s program called Soul Scholarships.

The program teaches healthy lifestyle lessons to teens from New York’s suburbs, where healthy living isn’t always discussed in schools or the community.

The 17-year-old girl was asked if she thought she was too old to learn about living a healthy lifestyle. “I would say that you’re never too old to learn anything,” Pond replied. “I don’t think cycling is that hard,” she added.

Like Pond, Brown said his favorite part of the program came after they got off the bikes. “We take nutrition classes, where we learn about alternative (可供替代的) food choices, healthy options that encourage us to be more healthy,” he said.

“Adapting (适应) to change,” he added, “is not something I’d necessarily do, but I did it, and for me that means everything.”

Early results are positive, and not just for Brown. About one third of the participants did not exercise before joining the program. Now, 95 percent of the participants are working out regularly. The participants are also reported to have cut back on soda, which can have high sugar content, by 46 percent.

8 . When it comes to exercise, most of us fit into one of the two groups — those who keep a regular exercise habit and those who think about being more active but can’t seem to have a plan to do it consistently. Whatever your attitude to exercise, there’s another form of physical activity that many of us car-loving people can do to get enough movement in general.

Studies have shown that putting away your car and walking, biking or taking public transport to work can have a significant positive influence on your health by improving spirits, reducing body weight and lowering the risk of heart disease.

It’s not surprising that taking a bus or a train regularly leads to a more physically active lifestyle. Just think about what comes with using public transport. Those who travel to work without a car walk to stations, climb stairs, often stand while waiting for their bus or train, and then finally travel on foot or by bicycle to their destination. Such active transport can make up for the inactive time spent in work and school environments.

There’s no doubt that the improving public transport system in the city is influencing the way people work and live. But though the public transport system is improving, it is not within easy reach of everyone who would like to use it.

Bike-sharing programs are also growing in popularity(普及)and helping to bridge a gap in the crowded city public transport system. These programs allow users to easily book, ride and return a borrowed bike. Bike-sharing programs help people who might still need to travel some distance between the end of the bus or the underground line and their final destination. They also offer an opportunity to residents and visitors to travel freely around the city without being trapped in a car.

1. What exercise does the author suggest for car-lovers?
A.Form a habit of taking exercise regularly.
B.Make a plan for exercise and take time for it.
C.Take a bus or a train and thus do some walking.
D.Live near the sports center for enough exercise.
2. How can we make up for the inactive time we spend at work?
A.By taking public transport to work.
B.By taking a drive to the countryside for fresh air.
C.By climbing stairs and standing during breaks.
D.By making a plan for exercise and stick to it.
3. What remains a disadvantage of public transport despite its improvement?
A.It’s too expensive and always comes late.
B.It’s too crowded and uncomfortable for travel.
C.It’s usually out of reach for most people.
D.Sometimes it can’t meet people’s demands.
4. What can be known about bike-sharing programs?
A.They can prevent people from being trapped in accidents.
B.They help to improve the city’s public transport system.
C.They are beginning to replace public transport.
D.They are beginning to appear in some large crowded cities.
