2 . The Netherlands is the only country in the world with more bicycles than residents. By 2022, the Netherlands has had a total of about 23 million bicycles, with an ownership rate of 1.35 bikes per person. One study published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that in the Netherlands cycling prevents about 6,500 early deaths each year, and that Dutch people have 1.5 years longer life expectancy (预期寿命) due to cycling.

“The time spent cycling was about 74 minutes per week for Dutch adults aged 20 to 90 years old. The time was fairly stable over adulthood and reached its apex in the early days of retirement, in one’s 60s. The death rate reduction, which was a direct result of the average time spent cycling for a certain age group, was therefore also the highest among the seniors who just retired,” said Jeremy Smith, an expert from NIH.

What is it that makes cycling so beneficial? Obviously, cycling is a form of exercise. It is a great form of cardio (有氧的) exercise, which gets your heart pumping and helps strengthen the heart muscles. Doing cardio exercise may also help lower your blood pressure.

Furthermore, solid evidence proves the link between cycling and better thinking skills. Even younger adults claim that a bike ride helps shift their thinking to a higher level — and research backs them up. In one small study, young men are required to cycle for 30 minutes every day for 3 weeks. They also completed a series of cognitive (认知的) tests before and afterward. After cycling, they scored higher on memory, reasoning and planning, and they were able to finish the tests more rapidly than before.

Besides all the benefits mentioned above, cycling, as many Dutch put it, is a way of life. In their simplest form, bikes are tools for travelling. But they’re so much more. They are cognitive improvement, environmental protection, satisfaction and an expression of freedom. They bring people of the same passion together and connect them to a greater journey of life.

1. Why does the author list figures in paragraph 1?
A.To compare the number of residents and bikes.
B.To illustrate the link between health and cycling.
C.To indicate the urgency for green transportation.
D.To emphasize the accuracy of the study by NIH.
2. What does the underlined word “apex” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Target.B.Peak.C.Destination.D.Potential.
3. What do we know about the study in paragraph 4?
A.It justifies the mental benefits of cycling.
B.It teaches practical skills about cycling.
C.It improves the critical thinking of young men.
D.It compares cognitive levels among different people.
4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Netherlands: A Country With Better Health
B.Netherlands: The Bicycle Capital of the World
C.Cycling: An Activity Bringing People Together
D.Cycling: An Activity Improving Your Health and More

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要介绍一项研究表明,长时间坐在电脑或电视屏幕前并不是近视的唯一原因。家长们不仅要记住限制孩子的总屏幕时间,还要鼓励他们多参加户外活动。

3 . For better eyesight (视力), doctors advise limiting (限制) the hours of screen time and encourage having enough eye resting time.

However, another study shows that sitting in front of computer or TV screens for long hours is not the only reason for myopia (近视). An Australian research team studied young children in Sydney and Singapore to find the reasons for myopia. The research team found that there were less children who had myopia in Sydney than those in Singapore, even though they spent more time in front of computer and TV screens. The major finding is that children in Sydney spend longer hours on outdoor sports than those in Singapore.

Indoor and outdoor sports both make the eyes pay attention to more distant (远处的) objects, which stops the eyes from changing original shape. But outdoor sports may be better than indoor sports for myopia. Because natural light is good for eye growth and vitamin (维他命) D from the sunlight might be useful to it. Many doctors suggest that every child get its first eye test when he/she is about two and half years old, and even if his/her sight seems good enough. It is necessary for myopic(近视的) children to wear glasses to stop headaches, trouble reading and so on. It is also important that schools invite doctors to test their students’ eyes.

If that is not possible, school teachers should at least encourage parents and children to have regular eye examination and wear glasses. And parents should remember not only to limit the total screen time for their children, but also to encourage them to spend time outdoors.

1. What did the Australian research team study for?
A.To find the reasons for myopia.
B.To find the ways to treat myopia.
C.To learn to choose right glasses.
D.To improve children’s eyesight.
2. Why are there fewer children with myopia in Sydney than those in Singapore?
A.Because the children in Sydney watch TV less.
B.Because the children in Sydney have more eye resting time.
C.Because the children in Sydney use computer less.
D.Because the children in Sydney do more outdoor sports.
3. What conclusion can we draw from the passage?
A.Sydney children don’t study hard.
B.Singapore children do few exercise.
C.Room light does harm to children’s eyes.
D.Outdoors activities do more good to eyes.
4. Which of the following is true?
A.Children should have eye tests as soon as they reach school age.
B.Looking more at distant objects can help the eyes keep their original shape.
C.Doing outdoor sports with no glasses is good for myopic children.
D.Children should limit their time in the sun to protect their eyes.

5 . Not having done physical exercise for some time, I found myself a little low-spirited and couldn’t study efficiently, so I decided to do some running the next day. At 6:15 the next morning, my alarm clock rang. Unwilling to rise from my bed, I turned it off and went back to sleep. However, 5 minutes later, I struggled to get up. After washing and brushing, I had my sneakers on and went out.

Wow! The air was so fresh that I couldn’t help breathing it deeply. I stretched (伸展) my arms and legs, then started to run. I found all things around me were so attractive. Look, the branches were waving, as if they were welcoming me; the blossoming flowers were bowing, with shyness, just like girls. Listen, the wind was whispering, as if to say “come on, girl”. What’s more interesting was those two birds, perching in the tree. They were scared and flew away when I passed them. “Hey, chaps, relax.” I shouted without stopping running. “Let’s enjoy the beautiful morning together!” Then miracle (奇迹) happened. The two little creatures seemed to understand what I said. They turned back and twittered (吱吱叫) around me. “Are you singing for me?” I asked. They twittered again and again, sounded like “Yes”. I was delighted to hear that. Ah, what a wonderful morning and how beautiful life is!

Actually, there are a lot of charming things around us. Helen Keller wrote in her famous article Three Days to Sec, “The seeing see little”. Indeed, many of us ignore (忽视) the beauty around us, just because we are familiar with them. They always complain that life is boring. 文章大意:本文是篇说明文。青少年肥胖正在成为美国社会的一大问题,文章主要分析了其产生的原因和解决办法。

6 . Obesity (肥胖) has become a serious problem now. According to a recent survey, teenage obesity has increased at an alarming rate across America. Teenage obesity is mainly due to the increased consumption (消耗) of junk food which contains large amounts of fat. This has exposed the teens to a 14% greater risk of having a heart attack as well as seriously high blood pressure.

Various causes of teen obesity have been claimed, the most important of which is being insufficient (不足) physical exercise on the teen’s part. It is argued that teens nowadays who lack (缺少) sufficient physical exercise topped with their unhealthy eating habits are more likely to be obese. Nowadays, a main part of the teenagers spend their spare time on the computer, television or perhaps simply playing games. This greatly limits any kind of physical activity of the teenager. According to a recent survey, around 43% of teenagers spend more than 2 hours watching television every single day.

Long time inactivity in addition to the ill eating habits has increased the incidence (发生率) of obesity in teenagers even more, However, this does not mean that teens do not do enough exercise, but the amount which they do, is certainly not sufficient as compared to their intake of fatty foods. Besides this, parents need to change the whole lifestyle of the family in order to develop a healthier lifestyle of their children.

The teenagers must also be encouraged to take part in other physical activities which require more effort; such as playing basketball, tennis, badminton, volleyball and swimming. Meanwhile, the teenagers also need to be educated on the ill effects of junk food and must be asked to avoid them as much as possible. Their diet must also be made healthier and more balanced, which will help them in losing more weight quickly. For better guidance on reducing the teen’s weight quickly, parents can always turn to a doctor.

1. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.Junk food is the main food for the American.
B.American teenagers suffer from high blood pressure.
C.The number of fatty American teenagers is increasing.
D.Most American teenagers probably have heart disease.
2. What’s the most important reason for obesity among teenagers?
A.Bad eating habits.B.Playing computer games.
C.Lack of physical exercise.D.Watching TV programmes.
3. Why do teens taking part in exercise still get obese?
A.The exercise they choose is too simple.
B.The method they do exercise is improper.
C.The energy they consume is less than that they take in.
D.The time they spend doing sports is more than that spent on food.
4. What’s the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Rules made for teens.B.Reasons for teen obesity.
C.Suggestions offered to parents.D.Ways to deal with teen obesity.
