To us humans, climate change feels like something that's happening to the atmosphere, but actually about 90% of the heat that gets trapped by greenhouse gases is absorbed by the ocean. Of course, the ocean is really big, and taking its temperature is hard. Now, however, scientists have developed a technique that allows them to measure temperature changes across the entire ocean basins.
The idea dates back to the 1970s, when researchers first proposed using sound waves to study ocean warming, because the speed of sound through water depends on the physical properties (性质) of the water, which are related to temperature. “And roughly speaking, if we warm up the ocean by one degree Celsius, the sound speed will change — it will be four meters per second. And this is a very sensitive change,” said Wenbo Wu, a seismologist at Caltech, who led the study.
Researchers originally proposed using artificial sound sources, but that proposal got arrested because of concerns about the impacts on marine animals. In the new study, however, Wu and his colleagues showed they could use the sounds produced by earthquakes instead. In an earthquake, some vibrations (震动) bounce off the seafloor and turn into sound waves that get picked up by a special machine and underwater microphones. The researchers looked at the travel time of these sound waves in 2.000 pairs of earthquakes that occurred in the Indian' Ocean between 2005 and 2016. Each pair of earthquakes happened in the same place but at different times, allowing the researchers to measure how much the sound waves sped up.
The analysis revealed that the waves traveled a few tenths of a second faster in more recent quakes than in older ones — a difference that translates to a warming trend of 0.04 degrees Celsius per decade. “0.04 degrees Celsius may not sound like a lot, but it represents a huge amount of heat-considering it's the change in a body of water almost 2,000 miles wide and several miles deep,” said Wu.

7 . In May, we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, or AAPI Heritage Month. My family comes from the country of Bangladesh, a country in South Asia. Tens of years ago, members of my family moved to the United States. They lived in New Jersey, where some other relatives had already lived.
While family members have got used to American ways of life, the Bangladeshi culture is still alive through our food and culture. Traditionally in May, we go to my grandmother’s house and make homemade paratha, fresh mint tea, aloo tikki, khichri, and phirni, all of which are delicious Bangladeshi foods.
When my mother was growing up, she often asked my grandma to make paratha. “Even now, I ask my mum to make paratha. Having my mum’s paratha brings back something from my childhood,” she says.
Often, we start our morning by picking fresh mint from my grandma’s garden, which we later use in our tea. We then collect what is needed for—the star of our breakfast, paratha. Some simple things include flour (面粉) water, and salt. The most important part is kneading the dough (揉面团). Many things can go wrong, such as adding too much water or not adding enough flour. With practice, the end result is fried bread that is thin.
Shortly after our light breakfast, we prepare aloo tikki. It starts with mashing (捣碎) potatoes. My grandma often uses pink salt and lemon to make the potatoes taste better. Next, the potatoes are shaped into small round pieces and fried in oil. The final thing on our menu is phirni, a rice pudding. It’s the perfect way to end a Bangladeshi meal.
My grandmother moved to the U. S. as a teenager. It’s a gift to learn about her experiences, and to learn from her about the tastes of Bangladeshi culture. Although Bangladesh is a lesser known Asian country, through people like my grandmother, Bangladeshi culture and traditions will continue.

About two years ago, I was a high school student in Beijing, getting ready for one of the most important exams of my life. The night before the big day, I carefully packed my backpack with the essentials: pens, erasers, my ID card, and my exam admission ticket. My parents wished me good luck and reminded me to go to sleep early. Feeling confident, I went to bed to make sure I would be well-rested.
The next morning, I woke up feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. After breakfast, I grabbed my backpack and headed to the bus stop. As I boarded the bus, I suddenly remembered that I had forgotten to pack my pencils, which were necessary for filling out the answer sheet. Panic set in. There was no time to go back home and fetch them, and the nearest store was too far away.
Desperate, I looked around the bus, hoping to spot a fellow student who might have a spare pencil. My eyes landed on a girl about my age, sitting a few seats ahead, lost in her notes. Gathering my courage, I approached her and explained my dilemma (困境), hoping she might be able to help.
To my surprise, she didn’t hesitate. She opened her pencil case and pulled out a couple of pencils, handing them to me with a reassuring smile. “I always carry extra ones, just in case,” she said. “You can take these.”
