3 . Animals can move from place to place, but plants cannot. When an animal is under attack, it can run away or fight back. Plants certainly cannot run away, and they lack teeth and claws. But plants can defend themselves by using both physical and chemical means.

Some plants have their own ways to keep animals away. For example, the leaves of the holly plant have sharp spines (刺) that discourage grass-eating animals. Holly leaves on lower branches have more spines than leaves on upper branches. This is because the lower leaves are easier for most animals to reach.

Some plants, such as the oak tree, have thick and hard leaves that are difficult for animals to eat. Some grasses may contain a sandy material; eating such grasses wears down the animal's teeth.

Many plants also have chemical defenses. Some plants produce chemicals that taste bitter or cause an unpleasant reaction. Some plants may fight against an attack by increasing the production of these chemicals. When a caterpillar (毛虫) bites a tobacco leaf, the leaf produces a chemical messenger. This messenger sends to the roots the information to produce more nicotine. The higher levels of nicotine discourage the caterpillar.

Many plants depend on both physical and chemical defenses. A certain plant in China, for instance, has prickly (多刺的) leaves, and each prickle contains poisonous venom (毒液). A single experience with this kind of plant will teach an animal to stay away from it in the future.

1. The holly plant has more spines on the lower leaves because most animals________.
A.are not tall enoughB.like the lower leaves only
C.are not clever enoughD.can get the lower leaves easily
2. To defend themselves, oak trees use________.

3. How does tobacco protect itself against an attack from a caterpillar?
A.Its leaves fight against the attack by physical means.
B.Its roots send a messenger to discourage the caterpillar.
C.Its roots increase the production of nicotine when it is attacked.
D.Its leaves produce poisonous sand to drive the caterpillar away.
4. What would be the best title for this passage?

7 . I have two kids, a boy and a girl. I don’t worry about my girl; I’m sure she’ll be well trained in mixed martial arts. I worry about my son. I’m pretty sure he’s going to be feminine (女性化的). Sorry to say that, but let’s face it. No dad wants his son to go feminine.

At the rate we’re moving in a couple of years you won’t be able to tell the difference between boys and girls. Sound extreme? Think about this. In every movie where advanced time-traveling beings come to our planet there’s one constant: You can’t tell the male aliens from the female aliens!

But that’s the future. Kids today are soft and fat. People ask why. Is it junk food? No. Junk food has been around for fifty years. Is it video games? No. Video games have been around for thirty years. None of the kids playing them back in the day were terribly obese. We’re all scratching our heads trying to figure out what we’ve introduced to society to ruin our kids. But it’s not anything we’ve added that has ruined our kids. It’s stuff we’ve gotten rid of.

Take the gym rope for example. Remember that thing that stretched from the floor to the ceiling in your gym class that you could never climb? Most of the kids couldn’t make it to the top. But that wasn’t the point; the point was you had to try while some middle-aged guy who couldn’t make it up a flight of stairs shouted at you. We should have put our son on that rope, and given him a head start, but we didn’t want to shame the boy, so we took it down.

Taking down the rope would be a good idea if there were no ropes in life. But they’re everywhere. You just can’t see them. They’re in every goal unrealized and expectation not met. The point everyone missed about the rope is you weren’t supposed to make it to the top. It was there to create a fire that burned in the oversized belly of every kid.

1. What is the example of aliens used to show?
A.Girls are growing like boys.B.Boys are going feminine.
C.There are really time-traveling beings.D.Alien movies are popular with children.
2. What causes kids today to be soft and fat?
A.Junk food.B.Video games.
C.Stuff introduced to society.D.Things removed from society.
3. How does the author find teenagers today?
A.They have too much dignity.B.They are overprotected.
C.They are less independent.D.They are thought too highly of.
4. What does the rope probably symbolize?
A.Goals.B.Expectations.
C.Competition.D.Assistance.

8 . A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off(打瞌睡)—if it is milked from a cow at night.

Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin(褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety(焦虑).The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder(奶粉) made from cows milked both during the day and at night. Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.

Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.

While the effect of cow milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who have trouble falling asleep at night.

Previous (以前的)studies have also showed that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.

1. According to the text, the mice fed with daytime milk_______.
A.started sleep more easilyB.were more anxious
C.were less activeD.woke up later
2. Which of the following is true of melatonin according to the text?

3. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Night Milk and SleepB.Fat Sugar and Health
C.An Experiment on MiceD.Milk Drinking and Health
4. How does the author support the theme of the text?
A.By giving examples.
B.By stating arguments.
C.By explaining statistical data.
D.By providing research results.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。现在有这样一个即有趣又可悲的现象:乐队和歌唱家的数量在增加,而好音乐的数量在减少,本文就阐述了其中背后的原因。

9 . There is an interesting, but at the same time a sad phenomenon now:there is a rise in the number of singers and bands that have little to do with good music. Many singers or bands know little about what good music means. What is the cause of this rise?

Most of these singers have taken music as a“job” because it is a good source of making money. And if you have a good appearance and also expensive clothes to show off at your concerts or at different appearances in public, then your voice is not as important as it should be. The public will prefer to admire more the most interesting parts of your body, whether you are a girl or a boy. They will even forget about the fact that you are there to show your music skills, not your dancing, which is important too, but not at such a high level.

Therefore, we can see many young girls on TV who look very good but who have nothing to do with music. They choose to wear very provocative (挑逗性的) clothes to catch attention, but when it comes to singing they are a complete mess and one doesn't need to have an ear for music to notice their lack of talent. But anyway, they have concerts and they enjoy travelling from one place to another. It is the public's fault because they accept this and are pleased with this commercial music. People who enjoy this kind of music are generally young people while adults prefer listening to old good bands.

However, the young generation should understand while appearance is important, it is less important than talent and a good voice. If somebody has a great voice and wants to become a singer, he should take some special courses in this area, because they will help him improve singing abilities.

1. The passage shows that many singers consider music as_____.
A.an art serving the public
B.a good way of making money
C.a way of living fully
D.a fashionable lifestyle
2. From the passage we can learn that____.
A.appearance is the most important thing in the world of music
B.all people who have received training in singing can become famous
C.adults should help young people improve their abilities
D.a singer's talent and voice are the most important factors
3. What do you think is the author's attitude towards the rising number of new singers and bands?
A.Critical.B.Supportive.
C.Tolerant.D.Worried.
4. What kind of article does this passage belong to?
A.Entertainment.B.Sport.
C.Comment.D.Story.
