1 . Most people who ran the marathon last month spent days before resting up and days after recovering. But not Jacky Hunt-Broersma. In total, she ran 104 marathons in 104 days. If it’s confirmed by Guinness World Records, that would be a new world record. And she did it all with one leg and a prosthesis (假肢).
“Someone able-bodied had done it previously. I wanted to see if I could do it on a prosthetic leg and see what would happen,” she said. “I thought it would be a great way to inspire others to push their limits because I truly believe that we’re stronger than what we think. And I’ve been so pleasantly surprised that my body’s held up, everything’s held up and I’ve made it to 104.”
She actually did not pick up the sport until after she lost the lower part of her left leg in 2001 to a type of cancer called Ewing sarcoma. Runners using a prosthetic leg can’t use a regular one. They need a running blade (刀锋式跑步义肢). Hunt-Broersma has two, but she was only able to run with one because of the swelling she experienced in her left leg that made it impossible to connect to the other blade. But even with the pain that occurred, she has been able to put up with it and continued.
All together, Hunt-Broersma ran over 4,385 kilometers. During that time she’s had a lot of time to think and has learned a few things about herself. “It’s taught me how strong one can be and how important absolute determination is. If you’re mentally strong, you can do anything,” she said. “And our bodies are just amazing. . . This whole journey was impressive and super hard, but it’s told me how strong I can be as a person and how far I can push myself.”

2 . After traveling nearly 10,000 kilometers, a package from Britain arrived at the memorial hall for the Lisbon Maru incident on Dongi Island in Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province this month. Inside the package was a painting belonging to Graham Saxby, which was his gift to the fishermen on Dongii Island.
In October 1942, an armed Japanese cargo ship, the Lisbon Maru, was torpedoed (鱼雷击中) by the Americans off the Zhoushan islands in Zhejiang. The ship was transporting some 1, 800 British prisoners of war from Hong Kong to Japan, among whom was Saxby’s father. While the ship was sinking, the prisoners were confined (监禁) in the holds. As they tried to escape, many were shot by the Japanese. Local Chinese fishermen risked their lives during the shooting and rescued as many prisoners as they could using their small boats. A total of 384 British prisoners of war were rescued by the fishermen, for which the British government and people were deeply grateful. A special screening of the documentary The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru was held in London on August 15. Survivors recalled the incident in the film.
After learning that Saxby was going to gift the locals a painting, Wu Xiaofei, a painter on Dongji Island, returned his friendship with a painting. “My grandfather was one of the fishermen who took part in the rescue, rowing a boat back and forth several times to rescue the British prisoners of war,”Wu says. She finished her drawing, which shows the joy, unity and harmony of fishermen, in just three days.
To help bring the forgotten historical event to light, Saxby is now asking a professional painter to create a work to show the rescue scene, while another painting related to the incident by Wu has been completed and is ready for exhibition.

7 . The Chinese Students and Scholars Association in the UK held a Spring Festival gala (庆典) on Wednesday in London to count down to the Chinese New Year. More than 900attendees, including representatives from British universities and education institutions, as well as Chinese students and scholars, joined to enjoy a feast of Chinese culture.
This year’s Chinese New Year falls on Saturday, and 2024 is the year of the dragon based on the Chinese zodiac. The dragon is considered by the Chinese people to represent dignity, prestige, and fortune.
The festival gala, with a theme of “Soaring Dragon’s Spring Melody”, featured Chinese folk music, dance, singing, martial arts performance and more.
During the event, Zheng Zeguang, China’s ambassador to the UK, made a speech to the attendees, highlighting major accomplishments achieved in the past year and stating China’s future development focuses.
He pointed out that China will determinedly pursue high-quality development and Chinese modernization to advance the great rejuvenation (复兴) of the Chinese nation. China will also call for an equal and orderly multipolar (多级的) world as well as for inclusive economic globalization that benefits all, Zheng noted. “Our motherland has bright prospects for future growth,” he said.
The ambassador praised Chinese students and scholars for being hardworking and behaving in a controlled way, saying that the number of Chinese students in the UK has significantly increased due to the transformation of China. “I hope you will carry on the tradition of patriotism. I hope you will ai m high and work hard. I hope you will unit e and help each other, as well as make friends widely. I hope you will grow into the backbone of the nation in the near future,” he said.
Alistair Fitt, vice-headmaster of Oxford Brookes University, extended warm wishes of good fortune and prosperity in the year of the dragon and expressed hope for progress in Sino-British relations. “I am very sure that our two great nations will continue to expand all of our very successful relationships,” he said.

8 . It was May 17,2015, and Brian, then 36, had been out of communication distance since the 13th. Brian climbed the hill next to his temporary camp and scanned his hand-held radio, hoping to catch a signal. Realizing search planes would have a hard time spotting him, he, for the first time since losing contact, felt a strong sense of hopelessness. In the distance, a wolf howled and Brian howled back. Then he made his decision: if he was ever going to see his family again, he’d just have to start walking.
On May 17, Brian decided to make his move, filled his bag with necessary things, picked up his gun and started walking though it was raining. Brian walked well into the night, making his way about 15 miles until he couldn’t walk anymore. But the next stretch was harder, the land hillier. Keep climbing, he’d tell himself, and you’ll see a hunting shelter just over the hill top. Then he’d make it to the top only to see another hill. To make matters worse, his core body temperature was falling below the usual level as a result of being in severe cold for a long time, putting his life at risk. For the first time, he began to panic. He knew if he didn’t move quickly, he’d die.
Three days into his voyage on foot, with little water, he was becoming dangerously dehydrated. Falling and lying on the ground, Brian dreamed of his family as if hearing his daughters constantly laughing. Suddenly, Brian sat up. “I want to see my wife, I want to see my kids grow up”, he thought, rising to his feet. “I’ll start walking.”
Brian moved on with heavy steps. About five miles from Repulse Bay, he spotted radio towers — the first sign of a community. He struggled forward until he saw a shelter at the top of the hill. With the last of his energy, he climbed up and broke in, where he slept solidly for 12 hours. The walk into town the next day was easy. Brain arrived at 5:30 am on May 20.
Today, safe at home, Brian still gets emotional remembering the welcome he received. “Everyone was very happy everywhere I went,” he says.

Joey was so excited that he could hardly wait to get to the store. He walked so fast that his sister Beth had to run. On his way from school he had seen that baseball cap in the Rogers’ store window. Only a dollar, and this was the last cap! Joey had been longing for the cap for a long time. He wanted it most because nearly every boy at school had one.
Joey thought of his piggy bank, into which he put every coin earned by running errands (差使) for several months. Joey raced home. He held the fat iron pig opened it carefully, and poured out the coins. Ten… twenty… thirty… ninety cents. If only he had one more dime (十分硬币)! Lost in thought, Joey stared out the window.
“What’s wrong, Joey?” asked Mother. Joey told her about the money and the cap. “If you give me what you have, I’ll add a dime,” Mother said, handing him a dollar bill. Joey jumped up, “Oh, thanks, Mom. That’s great!”
And away went Joey and Beth to the store with the dollar bill in Joey’s pocket. They turned the last corner. Ahead was a group of boys and girls talking heatedly and looking down at the sidewalk. One of the children was Ronny, a new boy who had been in this town only for a short time. Ronny’s father had been sick so there wasn’t much money for extras—like a baseball cap.
“What’s the matter?” Beth asked, anxiously.
“It’s Ronny,” answered Susan. “He’s been working and finally saved up a whole dollar, but now it’s lost!”
Joey went over to Ronny. “We’ll all help look. We’ll find it!”
“Ronny was going to get that last cap in the Rogers’ window,” cut in Susan.
“I want it a lot. I want to join them,” Ronny said slowly.
Suddenly Joey remembered how Ronny had watched the fellows playing baseball his eyes lighting up eagerly as they shouted and ran.
