3 . The flying fox is not a fox at all. It is an extra large bat that has got a fox’s head, and that feeds on fruit instead of insects (昆虫). Like all bats, flying foxes hang themselves by their toes when at rest, and travel in great crowds when out flying. A group will live in one place for years. Sometimes several hundred of them occupy (占据) a single tree. As they return to the tree toward sunrise in the morning, they quarrel among themselves and fight for the best places until long after daylight.

Flying foxes have babies once a year, giving birth to only one each time. At first the mother has to carry the baby on her breast wherever she goes. Later she leaves it hanging up, and brings back food for it to eat. Sometimes a baby bat falls down to the ground and squeaks (尖叫) for help. Then the older ones swoop (俯冲) down and try to pick it up. If they fail to do so, it will die. Often hundreds of dead baby bats can be found lying on the ground at the foot of a tree.

5 . Having a microchip implanted in a man’s brain may be common in sci-fi movie plots, but it may soon become an actual possibility.

Elon Musk -- a US tech tycoon, founder of Space X -- has been working on this technology. On Aug 28, Musk gave a display of the chip, which was implanted into the head of a pig named Gertrude. The chip, developed by Musk’s company Neuralink, is just as small as the size of a coin. But don’t let its size fool you. The tiny chip has over 3,000 electrodes(电极) attached to flexible threads(线), which can monitor about 1,000 neurons(神经元). It collects neural signals from an area of the brain, and then wirelessly transmits those signals to nearby computers, according to MSN. That enabled researchers to monitor Gertrude’s brain activity while she was walking around in the display.

Though the technology is still in its early stage, it is encouraging for humans. This technology would solve a lot of brain injuries and is essential for AI symbiosis(共存关系), which will allow the human brain to combine with an artificial intelligence. When the device can be applied to humans, its main goal will be to help those who have mobility difficulties. Musk hopes this technology can also be used to help those with hearing and eyesight issues.

Although such a device could repair those problems, putting it into practice is by no means a piece of cake. Currently, the device can transmit signals from about 500 neurons in the pig’s brain. Compared to 80 billion neurons in a human brain, this number is extremely tiny. And to cover the whole human brain also means the electrodes have to be much smaller.

Also, implanting the chip into the brain poses a potential danger. There is a risk of the immune system attacking this foreign body. Right now, the hope of controlling the brain by controlling just a few neurons seems overly optimistic. “There are still so many technological challenges, especially the possible risks it may cause, to overcome before Neuralink can put its devices to the purposes,” Yuan Lanfeng, an associate professor at the University of Science and Technology of China, told China Daily.

1. What do we know about Elon Musk’s microchip?
A.It was inspired by sci-fi movie plots.B.It is able to collect wireless signals.
C.It is tiny in size but powerful in function.D.It has been implanted into a human’s brain,
2. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The operation of the chip in Gertrude’s brain.
B.The attachment of electrodes to flexible threads.
C.The development of neurons inside Gertrude’s brain.
D.The transmission of signals from a nearby computer
3. What is the major target of the microchip?
A.To monitor animals’ brain activity.
B.To help people with mobility problems.
C.To develop a cure for immune system problems.
D.To contribute to the research on AI technologies.
4. How does Yuan Lanfeng feel about implanting the chip into the human brain?
A.Disapproving.B.Indifferent.C.Optimistic.D.Concerned.

6 . The 2021 Nobel Prize in literature has been awarded to the 73-year-old novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah, for his firm and passionate descriptions of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gap between cultures and continents.

Born in Zanzibar in 1948, Gurnah arrived in England as a refugee in the late 1960s. At the age of 21, he began to write in English. He worked as a professor of English and Postcolonial Literature at the University of Kent until his recent retirement this year.

Gurnah is the first black African author to have won the award since Wole Soyinka in 1986. He has published 10 novels and a number of short stories. The theme of the refugee’s sufferings runs through his works. His 1994 novel Paradise, which told the story of a boy growing up in Tanzania in the early 20th century, won the Booker Prize and marked his breakthrough as a novelist. And his most recent work Afterlives picks up the narrative of Paradise and takes place during the German colonization of Africa. His novels open our eyes to a culturally diversified East Africa unfamiliar to many in other parts of the world.

Gurnah said his award would mean issues such as the refugee crisis and colonialism, which he had experienced, would be “discussed”. “These are things that are with us every day. People are dying; people are being hurt around the world. We must deal with these issues in the kindest way.” He said, “The world is much more violent than it was in the 1960s, so there is now greater pressure on the countries that are safe. They unavoidably draw more people.”

In an interview in 2016, when asked if he would call himself an “author of postcolonial and/or world literature”, Gurnah replied, “I would not use any of those words. I wouldn’t call myself a something writer of any kind. In fact, I am not sure that I would call myself anything apart from my name.”

Yesterday I visit the Hong'en Temple Park with my friends. The park was full of beauty flowers. When I were enjoying the wonderful scenery, something unpleasant caught my eye. A young couple on the grass were eating, talking and laughing loud as if they were the only people in the world. What's worse, they even threw rubbish onto the grass, without see the sign "No littering” nearby. What a shame!

Such behavior left me in thought. If all visitors do as the young couples did, the park will be severely polluting and soon turned into a huge dustbin. I think both of us should mind our behavior in the public places. Only in this way can we live more comfortable and beautiful surroundings.
