Spenser’s First Web

Spenser was a small black spider (蜘蛛). Like all of his brothers and sisters, he had eight legs to help him walk and run. He was now big enough to know how to move all his legs together and not trip over them. Spenser was getting bigger every day.

Today Spenser felt nervous. It was time for him to learn to spin (织) a web on his own. He had watched his mother build beautiful, soft webs from the silk she made herself.   His mother’s webs were lovely. They took a long time to make, and in the morning, they were covered with drops of dew that made them look like castles.

“OK, Spenser,” said Ms. Spinney. “It’s time to spin your first web. Let’s begin by making a big plus sign.” Ms. Spinney was Spenser’s teacher. She was old and small but very strong. She quickly used her silk to make a plus sign between two nearby leaves.

Spenser was able to make silk, but he had trouble attaching it to anything. No matter how hard he tried, the threads (丝) slipped away and fell to the ground. Spenser tried hard, but he was getting tired.

“Take a break, Spenser,” said Ms. Spinney. “You’re trying very hard, but I can see that you’re getting frustrated (沮丧的).”

“I’m not frustrated!” said Spenser. “I’m mad that I’m not good at it, and I’m sad that I can’t do it. ”Spenser felt like he was going to cry.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I bought Jude as a tiny puppy after my previous dog died in a horrible incident. My heart was just broken and it was only having Jude that brought me back round from that pain. He was a lovely and happy pet.

For the first time in years, our whole family had gone on holiday together. It was only for four days but it meant my dog Jude was going to be looked after by someone outside the family. I was a bit nervous about it. After struggling for several days, I eventually booked him into a home boarding place in Belfast. I was worried about him the moment he was dropped off, because he had never been in kennels before.

The emotions we have gone through in the last few days have been awful. Jude was used to the comforts of a home and he had never been on his own before. Thus, I was worried about him at the bottom of my heart. Then unfortunately, the accident happened.

We went away on Monday, July 11, and he was missing on the 12th after being left in an exercise area. But it was on Thursday that I was told he had gone though I messaged the kennels every day to see how he was.

The moment we got home, we went looking for him but we didn’t know the area. My daughters Karla and Leanne took a tent and camped out to keep looking for Jude and they con-firmed a number of sightings of him. There were leaflet drops, drones put up and ground searches and posters. Social media was flooded with his photo and we got news of lots of sightings which helped. On Sunday night, my grandson Caidon who is nine, his mum Ashleigh and their dog Bonnie, went with us to the location of a reported sighting by a kind man and there Jude was.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,作者由一群动物拯救了一个火星人的故事告诉我们团结就是力量。

6 . One night, a hedgehog (刺猬) was scanning the sky with his telescope, when he saw what seemed to be a spaceship flying to the moon. When he managed to properly focus on it, he found out that it was a craft belonging to an unfortunate Martian who seemed to have had an accident, and had to make an emergency landing on the moon.

The hedgehog realised that surely only he himself had seen this, so he decided to try to save the Martian. He called together a few animals to help. They couldn’t think what to do, so they called for more and more animals to join in. In the end, practically everyone in the forest was involved. It occurred to them that if they stood on top of each other, they could build a big tower and perhaps reach the moon.

That proved extremely difficult, and most animals ended up having had a finger in their eye, someone’s foot in their ear, and numerous bumps on the head. However, after much perseverance, they finally reached the moon and rescued the Martian. Most unfortunately, while he was coming down the tower of animals, the bear couldn’t help sneezing. Oh, the disgusting, invisible, tiny…!

The whole tower crashed to Earth with a great din including howls, roars, and other assorted animal cries. Seeing all this, the Martian thought that the animals would be very angry with him because they would blame it all on him. But it was just the opposite. As they recovered from the fall, the animals jumped and clapped with joy, happy to have achieved something so difficult together. The whole day was spent partying.

The Martian observed everything, and when he returned to his planet the other Martians were astonished at what had happened. And so it was those simple and helpful animals that taught the Martians the importance of working together, joyfully, in a team.

1. What can we learn about the rescue?
A.The animals celebrated for their success.
B.The hedgehog got all the animals to help.
C.The Martian had intended to travel to the moon.
D.The tower crashed because of the animals’ being exhausted.
2. What does the underlined word “din” mean in paragraph four?
A.Anger.B.Force.C.Noise.D.Relief.
3. What might happen to the Martians in the future?
A.They will like to travel alone.

C.They will always be ready for teamwork.

4. What is probably the moral of the story?
A.There is strength in numbers.
B.A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C.One good turn deserves another.
D.Satisfaction from cooperation counts.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述Lillian水中救袋鼠的故事。

7 . Lillian, 17, had just started working as a lifesaver at a beach in Australia on New Year’s Eve when beach-goers started to point and shout at the water. The workers quickly examined the situation and saw that a kangaroo had jumped out of the bushes (灌木丛) — straight into the sea.

The animal seemed confused by the fishermen standing on the rocks. So instead of turning back and heading back into the bushes, it jumped right into the water! The poor thing bobbed(摆动)around in the waves and went underwater several times before Lillian decided to take action.

As with any other animal rescue, it’s important to approach the situation with prudence. Wild animals that are stressed can become dangerous to their rescuers, and Lillian was aware of the risks as she took her rescue board and hit the water at a run. “It just didn’t want to come on to the beach because it was kind of scared,” she said. “I was trying to figure out how to get it on the board. But considering that it’s a wild animal, even though I was helping, I wouldn’t want to be hurt by it or make it more stressed out.”

As beach-goers recorded the rescue on their phones,Lillian paddled (用浆划船) behind the animal carefully and guided the kangaroo onto the beach. As soon as Lillian’s feet touched the sand, the beach erupted in cheers for her!“It was quite special. As people there were cheering and clapping, the kangaroo was just sitting there up in the bushes staring at me, as if it was conveying something with its shining eyes,” Lillian said. “I didn’t think that was going to ever be my first rescue, I may have more rescues in the future, but none would be as memorable as this one.”

1. What happened to the kangaroo?
A.It jumped off the rocks by mistake,
B.It jumped into the sea by accident,
C.It was forced to leave the bushes.
D.It was washed away into the sea.
2. What does the underlined word “prudence” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

A.It couldn’t wait to leave her.
B.It was worried about her safety.
C.It was confused about her action.

4. Which of the followings can best describe Lillian?

There was once a very lazy bird called Joe. When there was something he had to do, he would keep     1     (put) it off until there was hardly enough time left. Other birds always told     2     (he), “You can’t leave everything to the last minute.” However, Joe just wouldn’t listen.

When autumn came, the other birds began to prepare for the long journey to a warm area     3     Joe still put it off again and again. One day when he     4     (wake) up and found that all the other birds were gone, he realized that he would have to spend the long cold winter     5     his own. He had to admit that it was his own fault.

Joe knew he could do things well when he put his mind to them, so he began to prepare for winter. First, he found     6     place between rocks. Then, he made a new nest with branches, stones and     7     (leaf). Next, he filled the nest with fruit, enough     8     (last) the whole winter. Finally, he dug a little pool in the cave so that he would have enough water.

When spring came and his old friends returned, they all felt     9     (surprise). They could hardly believe that such a lazy bird had     10     (manage) to build such a wonderful nest.

10 . I can’t say if it was love at first sight, but the dog’s strange look captured our hearts. That’s why we welcomed this rescue dog into our home.

Dixie had recently been found on a country road. We agreed to adopt her, relying on my son’s experience with the dog at the shelter. We gave her a safe place to sleep and her own area for food and water. Thankfully, Dixie became more comfortable with her new surroundings and began to show her personality. She found joy in being able to run free and play with other dogs, the bigger the better.

We wondered what kind of breed or mix she was. Her ears, the size of her body and coloring suggested to me she was a mix. While researching, we found that she had some characteristics similar to a pit bull (比特犬). One opinion I had was that pit bulls are aggressive and a danger to society. It was not their fault, I reasoned, and they had been bred to fight. How could I keep these beliefs when this little animal had warmed my heart?

At first, I was secretive (有所隐瞒的) when people asked Dixie’s breed. “I am not sure, she is a rescue,” I said, Because I was afraid of the response: “A pit bull? Oh, dear!” But I adored this animal! Dixie did not show the awful characteristics so widely publicized. Dixie and I have befriended many dogs and their owners who love her spirit, playfulness and friendliness. More importantly, she exposed one of my problems: a fear of being judged by others. There is no doubt that Dixie taught me not to be so quick to judge.

Now, I am a proud owner of this pit bull-like dog.

1. What can we find out about Dixie frown the first two paragraphs?
A.She was not open to humans.B.She adapted to her new host me well
C.She was brought up at a dog shelter.D.She was adopted because of her cleverness.
2. Why was the author unwilling to mention Dixie’s breed?
A.She was afraid of being judged.
B.She was unsure about her origin.
C.She thought the dog was bred to fight.
D.She found Dixie either aggressive or dangerous.
3. Which of the following can best describe Dixie?
A.Loyal and playful.B.god-looking and mild,
C.Warm and friendly.D.Naughty and competitive.
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A.To show we shouldn’t judge other people.
B.To introduce effective ways to train a dog.
C.To call on people not to abandon pet dogs.
D.To share the lessons she learned from her dog.
