4 . Neighborhoods filled with trees, grass and other flora not only improve the air and clear the mind--they can also reduce heart disease risk, recent studies suggest. Researchers say this may be more important in low-income areas, whether that’s an inner-city neighborhood or a suburb.
Green spaces often provide room for physical activity, an essential part for a heart-healthy lifestyle. But just living in a neighborhood thick with trees, bushes and other plants may reduce people’s risk of having a heart attack and other related diseases, according to a study published in the Journal of the American(JAHA). Those residents have lower stress levels and better cardiovascular(心血管的) health.
“There’s an economic difference when it comes to accessing green spaces, one that mirrors the differences found among people with cardiovascular disease,” said Rachel banner, director of park access. “Or, they may have a park nearby, but the park may be an unsafe place or there may be fences blocking(挡住) the entrances.”
Banner’s organization is part of the “10-Minute-Walk” campaign to ensure that there is a great park within a ten-minute walk of every person, in every neighborhood across the US.
Researchers continue to study the link between green spaces and heart health, and often the connection with an area’s economic level. A study led by Scott Brown looked at poor neighborhoods in Florida’s Miami-Dade County. They found people who lived in the greenest parts of Miami-Dade County were 25% less likely than those living in the green neighborhoods to have had a heart attack over a two-year period. He also suggested poor neighborhoods might gain the biggest cardiovascular health benefits from green spaces.
Brown points out that while evidence shows cardiovascular benefits from green neighborhoods seem to be especially greater for low –income residents, the common thread here is that for everyone , green space are associated with better health results.

6 . Shark attacks in the screen are amazing. That’s because your actual chances of ever being attacked by a shark are mere one in 11.5 million. That’s roughly the same as your chances of winning an Oscar, which makes shark attack survivor, Mike Coots both incredibly unlucky and lucky: When Mike was 18, he lost his leg to a shark bite.
“I was attacked by a tiger shark in late October 1997. It was near my home on the island of Kauai — a typical fall morning with friends. The waves were really good, so nothing was stopping us.” That is until a large shark came right up under Mike and sank his teeth into Mike’s lower leg. As he tried to free himself, the shark bit down harder, shaking its head back and forth and tossing Mike around like a rag doll. Mike followed his instinct (本能): He struck the shark in the face, again and again until the shark released him. As Mike swam back into shore, he realized his lower right leg was gone. Mike’s friends rushed to his aid, and sent him to the hospital.
As soon as Mike was well, he did what many of us might consider unthinkable: he started riding the waves again, in fact, his first time back was near the site of his attack. But Mike was unshaken. Instead, he was curious — why was he attacked? His curiosity led him to research sharks, and Mike did learn something that would change his life: Humans are far more dangerous to sharks than the other way around.
His situation as a shark survivor empowered him to give sharks a voice, Mike says. He began working with the Hawaii state authorities (当局) to help pass a ban (禁令) on shark-derived products. “I partnered with other like-minded shark attack survivors and marine biologists, and we headed to Washington to urge (敦促) senators to create a nationwide bit! protecting sharks.”

The first piece of space junk was created in the year of 1964, when the American satellite Vanguard I stopped operating.

10 . Can exercise during childhood protect you against memory loss many decades later? Exercise early in life seems to have lifelong benefits for the brain, in rats at least.
“This is an animal study, but it shows that physical activity at a young age is very important — not just for physical development, but for the whole lifelong track of cognitive (认知的) development during ageing,” says Martin Wojtowicz of the University of Toronto, Canada. “In humans, it may delay the appearance of Alzheimer’s symptoms (阿兹海默氏症), possibly to the point of preventing them.”
Wojtowicz’s team divided 80 young male rats into two equal groups, and placed running wheels in the cages of one group for a period of six weeks. Around four months later — when the rats had reached middle age — the team taught all the rats to connect an electric shock with being in a specific box. When placed in the box, they froze with fear.
Two weeks later, the team tested the rats in three situations: exactly the same box in the same room, the same box with the room arranged differently, and a completely different box in a different room.
The rats without access to a running wheel when they were young now froze the same percentage of times in each of these situations, suggesting they couldn’t remember which one was dangerous. But those that had been able to run in their youth froze 40 to 50 percent less in both changed box settings.
“The results suggest the amount of physical activity when we’re young, at least for rats, has influence on brain and cognitive health — in the form of better memories — when we’re older,” says Arthur Kramer of Northeastern University in Boston, who has found that, in humans, exercise promotes the growth of new brain cells.
