1 . Art is a wonderful thing that can enrich our spiritual life. It comes in two main types: realistic and abstract (抽象的). Realistic art aims to show real-life scenes, people, and objects exactly as they appear. It involves paying close attention to details, making things look like photographs.
Realistic art is easy to understand.
Unlike realistic art, abstract art is more about being creative.
As for personal preference, some people prefer the clear stories of realistic art while others are attracted to the mystery of abstract art, interpreting meanings in the shapes and forms. Together, the two kinds of art make the art world various and engaging.
A.Both types of art take skills to make. |
B.Viewers can easily recognize what is pictured. |
C.Mastering abstract art needs more artistic training. |
D.Photographs show imaginary life of people from long ago. |
E.Both ways of creating art have their own value and beauty. |
F.In contrast, abstract art focuses less on realistic appearances. |
G.Artists have the freedom to go beyond real-life representations. |
2 . Before you head out to a fun event where there will be many people, you should be aware of the dangers of a crowd crush (拥挤的人群), whose possibility adds up during the festivals or on some celebrating occasions.
Though the risk of crowd crush is rare, it can be deadly when it happens. Crowd crush occurs when many people are packed together and begin to fall over one another. In the past, such instances have caused horrible injury and even death.
Before attending a crowded event, look up a map of the venue.
Helping others is another great way to keep everyone safe. Once one person falls down, more people tend to fall over them.
A common cause of death in a crowd crush isn’t being crushed but rather losing air. It’s best to hold out your arms in front of your chest.
There is usually fun where the crowds are, so enjoy yourself. But meanwhile, it is also important to remember to stay alert and take care of your family members when you sense the smell of danger.
A.If you do end up in a crush, here’s how you can stay safe. |
B.This allows space between you and the person in front of you. |

F.The shortage of air means less oxygen, which will lead to serious consequences. |
G.This will give you an idea of the surroundings—pay special attention to any exits. |
3 . In today’s world, it can be challenging to stay motivated and positive. However, one powerful tool that we can use to overcome these challenges is encouragement. Encouragement can make a significant difference in someone’s life.
One of the most significant benefits of encouragement is that it builds strong relationships. Encouragement creates a positive environment where people feel valued and appreciated. When we encourage others, we are showing them that we believe in them and that we care about their well-being.
Another benefit of encouragement is that it creates a chain reaction.
In conclusion, the power of encouragement cannot be overstated. It has the potential to transform lives, build strong relationships, and create a ripple effect of positivity. By being intentional about our words and actions, we can use encouragement to build others up and create a better world.
A.Encouragement can change our moods. |

G.When we encourage others, we give them the motivation and confidence they need to succeed. |
4 . Everyone carries a shield(屏障). Our shields protect what we don’t want others to see, from our embarrassing secrets to our unpredictable feelings.
Since shields encourage us to hide negative parts of ourselves, we can start to believe that we aren’t worth showing. We might fear how our friends will judge our struggles or how our families will view our ambitions.
However, we have to remember that we aren’t perfect, nor should we expect to be. We need to find and cure the wounds underneath our shields, but that means we have to let down our guard. We may even have problems we haven’t admitted to ourselves.
Knowing this takes bravery and patience, so it’ll be hard.
A.This is not a bad thing. |
B.We need to be understood. |
C.We shouldn’t expect to do any of it without help. |
D.In short, we have the power to change this phenomenon. |

5 . Emojis are everywhere. They offer effective and fun ways to interact with others. Used well, they can become an engaging and creative addition to communication.
One well-chosen emoji can replace many words of text.
Emojis are clear, colorful, and designed to convey a single message memorably — which has been shown to increase interest and engagement. They stand out among text, especially when the recipient is working quickly or on the move.
Many emojis mean the same thing to everyone, everywhere.
Emojis can help you to show your human side, making you seem friendlier and more approachable. What’s more, the brain reacts to images of faces, and to real faces, in a very similar way.
Alongside all the potential benefits of emojis that we’ve listed above, there are also dangers you’ll need to guard against.
A.Here are some of the reasons why emojis are so popular. |
B.Many employees in some western countries are using emojis at work. |
C.An emoji is often easier and quicker to understand than a written explanation. |
D.So they can break through language barriers, and promote easy communication. |
E.For example, you could select an emoji of a house to set your status as “working from home.” |
F.A poorly chosen emoji can cause problems, because some of the images are not universally understood. |
G.For example, the crossed fingers emoji means good luck in some places, but it’s seen as an impolite sign in others. |
6 . The only words you need to say after receiving a compliment (赞美) are “thank you”. But you know that's easier said than done.
There are many reasons why you have a hard time accepting compliments.
You have to listen carefully to compliments. It's not always obvious if you're being complimented for something only others can observe. If you are five foot six inches tall, and weigh seventy pounds, I would say you are slim. But if you are comparing yourself to someone who is shorter, and weighs five pounds less than you, you might call yourself plump. In this extreme example, the outside perspective is more accurate than the internal one.
If you're still struggling to accept a compliment, you don't just have to take someone at their word. It can be hard to accept an opinion when it's the opposite of yours, so call in reinforcements. Ask someone else what they think.
A.They will be the tie breaker. |
B.You can check with someone else instead. |
C.The causes are complicated but the path to accepting compliments is simpler. |
D.How honest are you with your friends and family when they ask for your opinion? |
E.When someone is trying to pay you a compliment, they are speaking subjectively. |
F.When someone pays you a compliment, they are speaking about something that is observable. |
G.Similarly, when I call you smart or funny, I'm commenting based on my definition of smart or funny, that's how I see you. |
7 . Waste not, Want not
Today, I live in Manhattan with my husband, Alex. I’m an IT specialist and Alex is a lawyer. Life’s good, but sometimes I look at the way we live it and think of Ellie, my grandmother. Her favorite saying was “Waste not, want not.”
Such economy seems strange, even ridiculous, in our modern throwaway society, where everything is sold in boxes.
A.Packaging is not only used to protect goods |
B.My grandparents threw almost nothing away |
C.In one week alone, we threw away five old magazines |
D.We didn’t often go shopping and then cook meals at home |
E.As young Manhattan professionals, we buy a lot of “convenience food” |
F.But we pay a high financial and ecological price for our lovely packaging |
G.If you placed all the cans used in the United States, in one year end to end |
8 . What’s the first thing you remember doing? It could be playing with your friends at school, or going to a birthday party and eating amazing cake.
It’s a strange concept to grasp, but according to research, about four out of ten of us invent our first childhood memory. Rather than having experienced something, we could have fabricated a fake memory from videos or photos we’ve seen. We could have been influenced by a story recounted to us that spurs our minds on to adopt someone else’s memory as our own.
So why do we create fake memories? Some experts believe that there is a clear desire for a sense of self and having a cohesive (连贯的) story of our existence.
So, the next time someone says they have a clear memory from when they were one or even before just remember that while it could be true, there’s a chance they just invented it at some point in their lives.
A.But why don’t we have clear memories from that age? |
B.It happens to everyone no matter how educated he or she is. |
C.This is possibly due to the rapid creation of brain cells in our early years. |
D.We often talk about these memories with our families as if it were what happened yesterday. |
E.Creating memories can fill in the gaps giving us a more complete structure for our early lives. |
F.Most of us have a treasured early memory of our childhood, but can we really believe those vivid memories? |
G.What it means is that memories of our younger years, especially before the age of two, may be inaccurate, or entirely false. |
9 . Humankind has tried to improve its standard of living since the very beginning of civilization (文明). Back then, and today, providing food was the basic task for a person.
The traditional energy sources, which are commonly used nowadays, are considered to be the greatest polluters to the environment. There also exist so-called eco-friendly sources of energy.
In order to produce practical energy, a transformation of the natural site is often inevitable (不可避免的).
A.There are certain aspects of economic growth which affect the environment. |
B.Clean energy has always been on the priority list for a better environment. |
C.For these reasons, bringing about economic growth without any resulting environmental damage is impossible. |
D.However, nowadays the range of required goods has expanded significantly. |
E.So humankind began to make exploration to satisfy themselves economically and mentally. |
F.They are sometimes preferred but replacing the traditional sources with them also requires time. |
G.This is expensive and, has harmful effects on the environment. |
10 . Having a shy style isn’t necessarily a problem.
Practice social behaviors like eye contact, confident body language, introductions, small talk, asking questions, and invitations with the people you feel most comfortable around. Smile. Build your confidence this way. Then branch out to do this with new friends, too.
Think of some conversation starters.
Often, the hardest part of talking to someone new is getting started. Think of conversation openers, like introducing yourself, giving a compliment, or asking a question.
Give yourself a chance.
Give yourself a chance to practice socializing with new people, and get to know them slowly. People who are shy often worry about failing or how others will judge them.
Develop your confidence.
Because shy people can be overly concerned with other people’s reactions, they don’t want to rock the boat. It can mean they are less likely to be confident. Being confident means speaking up for yourself when you should, asking for what you want or need, or telling other people when they’re stepping on your toes.
Most of all, be yourself. It’s OK to try out different conversational approaches you see others using.
A.But say and do what fits your style. |
B.Write down what you want to say beforehand. |
C.Start small with people you know. |
D.Worries and feelings like these can keep you from trying. |
E.It’s perfectly OK to take time to warm up to new people and situations. |
F.Find group activities where you can be with people who share your interests. |
G.Being ready with a conversation starter makes it easier to approach someone. |
