1 . Something You Should Know About Balance Exercises

You need balance to perform just about any task, from walking, standing, sitting down in your chair, to every workout. Good balance helps prevent falls and therefore injuries, and simply makes daily activities easier and safer to perform. How steady you are on your feet can indicate how likely you are to live a longer, healthy life.     1    , you should take some balance exercises. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

·What exercises should you take?

2    . Other things that work your balance slightly differently, but again are really good, are ball games. It can be anything involving hand-eye coordination, such as tennis or table tennis.

·How often should you perform balance exercises?

Balance exercises are often low-impact, controlled movements, so there’s not really any risk of over-training. Older adults who are at risk of falls should try to do balance training at least three times a week to reduce risk.     3    .

·    4    ?

Training your balance three to six times each week should start to show results in 11 to 12 weeks. So, if you perform these exercises multiple times a week, you should see improvements in your balance in as few as three months.

·How long should you hold balance exercise positions?

The key to successful balance exercises is control and form. Move slowly with intention, focusing on bracing your core (稳住重心).     5    . For the movements that require a hold, try to hang on for at least 30 seconds, increasing each week as you improve.

A.What effects can balance exercises have on life
B.If you’d like to maintain quality of life and avoid pain
C.When the balance system as a whole starts to get worn
D.How long does it take to see results from balance exercises
E.Moving quickly will actually be less effective for these exercises
F.Young adults can do balance exercises every day or as often as they like
G.Pilates, dance and t’ai chi are all good exercises to maintain good balance

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是植物会让人感觉舒服的几个原因。

2 . Plants are of greater importance in our lives than we think whether or not we are keen gardeners.     1

Large, leafy plants placed indoors provide some shade and reduce heat from sunlight inside a room when we don’t necessarily always want to keep curtains shut. Indoor plants will also cool the air around them slightly as they transpire (水分蒸发). This can help to keep humidity (湿度) within the human comfort zone of around 30% to 60%.     2    .

While placing plants indoors is not going to solve all air quality issues, certain plants are known to be effective in improving air quality within a home.     3     Outdoors, plants also help improve air quality, especially where there is a particular issue such as busy roads or industrial areas nearby.

4     Modern rooms with lots of hard surfaces are sometimes acoustically (听觉上) uncomfortable, noisy spaces when poorly designed. Interestingly, indoor plants may help to reduce indoor noise levels. Placing potted plants in certain places —or, better yet, creating green walls indoors —can help provide acoustic comfort.

It has been shown in numerous studies that being around greenery and plants helps us to feel calmer and reduce stress. We feel calmer in natural environments.     5     This may be a simple thing, but the ability to connect with nature right outside our doors, and even inside our homes, can make a surprisingly big difference when it comes to how comfortable we feel.

A.Interestingly, climbing plants can also serve a function.
B.In winter especially, dry air can cause many health issues.
C.Here are different ways plants can help keep us comfortable.
D.Improved air quality can keep us healthier in our living spaces.
E.It is outdoors, however, that plants can make the biggest difference.
F.Another factor that can determine how comfortable we feel is sound.
G.So surrounding ourselves with plants can help us to feel safe and at peace.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲了现今许多父母和青少年难以平和相处,分析了原因并提出一些解决方法。

3 . Does every dinner with your parents seem to turn into a battle? Have your once warm and open conversations become cold and guarded? Do you feel that you just cannot see eye to eye with them on anything?     1    . Heated arguments and cold silences are common between teenagers and their parents.

2    . You may feel anxious that you are developing at a different rate to your friends, shooting up in height or getting left far behind. You might worry about your changing voice, weight problems or spots. When it all gets too much your parents are often the first targets of your anger.

It can be a big headache to balance your developing mental needs too. You enter a strange middle place,     3    . You have both a new desire for independence and a continued need for your parents’ love and support. You feel ready to be more responsible and make decisions on your own. Unfortunately, your parents do not always agree and that makes you feel unhappy. On the other hand, when you are struggling to control your feelings, you wish they could be more caring and patient. Sometimes they forget that growing up is a rough ride. It can be difficult when your parents treat you like a child but expect you to act like an adult.     4    .

When you disagree with your parents, take a minute to understand the situation from their point of view and try to have a talk with them. Perhaps they have experienced something similar and do not want you to go through the same pain. After you have thought it through, explain your actions and feelings calmly, listen carefully, and address their concerns. 4 . When a friend or family member sets sick, it’s difficult to see them lie in bed coughing uncontrollably and running a fever. What can you do to make them feel better? Luckily, we have some ideas.     1

*Listen first, then respond.

Oftentimes when a friend or family member is ill, we try so hard to make them feel better that we push solutions onto them that they might not be comfortable with. For example, maybe we think it’s best that they sit up, when really they just want to sleep. The first thing you can do to cheer someone up who isn’t feeling well is to actually listen to what their needs are before trying to meet them.     2     Ask questions and be a comforting ear to cheer them up, before trying to respond and “fix” their problems.

*    3

Being sick can be incredibly stressful because our schedules are so full. Keeping up with kids, work and housework while you’re sick is incredibly tiring. If this is the case, listen to what your loved one is stressed about, then ask if there is anything you can take off their to-do list.     4     Or, perhaps you could stop by the office to drop off paper work for her coworkers. Simple things like this will help enormously in taking the stress off of the ill person.

*Give them space.

Finally, one of the greatest things you can do for a sick friend or family member is just to give them space. They probably don’t want to get you sick, and having a conversation may be pretty difficult at this point. So, make sure all of their needs are met, then simply leave them alone.     5

A.Take on their to-do list.
B.Encourage them to relieve stress.
C.Avoid asking about their illnesses.
D.Don’t simply tell them what they need.
E.Maybe you could make dinner this week.
F.Check out these ways to cheer up someone who is sick.
G.Given space and time to rest and relax, they will feel better soon.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是四种让你更充分、更彻底地敞开心扉来迎接伤害和痛苦的方法。

7 . We try to escape from the hurt and pain by pretending it doesn’t exist, but although we can try this as we want, in the end, we can’t hide from ourselves.     1     The items listed below are four ways you can open your heart more fully and completely.

       Breathe into pain

Whenever a painful situation arises in your life, try to embrace it instead of running away or trying to mask the hurt.     2     When we run away from sadness that’s unfolding in our lives, it will get stronger and more real.

Ask your heart what it wants

We’re often confused at the next step to take, making pros and cons lists until our eyes bleed and our brains are sore. Instead of always taking this approach, what if we take a few deep breaths then ask, “Heart, what decision should I make here? What action feels the most right?”     3

       Accept your shadow

Many of us who are on the personal development path get caught up in embracing characteristics we want to have, like happiness, compassion, love, and passion. In this process we end up losing parts of ourselves that make us whole. Try asking yourself a question:     4     Once you’re a little clearer about what exactly you’ve been hiding from yourself, it will get easier to shine your light on it.

       Get outside of yourself

After you’ve explored the depths of yourself, you come away with a new understanding. Now, it’s time to share that — not through telling others, but through being with others. Lose yourself in the beauty of others; see what they can teach you about yourself.

5     Take one at a time, determine which works best for you, and see what you can discover.

A.What else can I do to improve myself?
B.Is there anything I’m hiding from myself?
C.Trying to escape is a good way to protect ourselves.
D.See what comes up, then engage and evaluate the outcome.
E.When sadness strikes, take a deep breath and lean into it.
F.Remember, there’s no need to do every one of these at the same time.
G.We need to learn to open our hearts to the potentials of life and let the world soften us.

9 . Ways the Pandemic Has Changed Our Relationship with Food for the Better

Some of food-related behavior changes have the potential to become new habits with long-term benefits. Here are five eating-related behaviors that might be kept after the pandemic.

1. Eating family meals together

For the first time, some kids now have two parents home for weeknight dinners.     1     That highlights the importance of eating together when you can. Research has found that eating as a family helps kids have better self-esteem, more success in school, and lower risk of depression.

2. Kids learning to cook

Some families are making time to get kids involved in the kitchen.     2     Start with the basics by letting your child arrange simple snacks on a plate. It’s never too title, too early or too late to start giving kids some things to do in the kitchen.

3. Eating more plant-based proteins

People are trying tofu and homemade veggie burgers and finding out that, with the right recipes, these foods can be delicious. Alternatives to animal protein benefit the health of individuals and our planet.     3

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍的是应该定期看牙医的原因。

10 . Having a regular dentist check up is as essential for ensuring healthy teeth and gums (牙龈) as regular brushing and flossing. Here’s why you should make the trip.

Prevention is better than cure. Regular dental check-ups are recommended to maintain healthy teeth and gums.     1     Your dentist will advise you on what’s right for you. The aim of a check-up is to nip any problems in the bud, before you experience pain, lose teeth or have other health problems.

You’ve had a new medical diagnosis.     2     For example, high blood sugar levels in saliva caused by diabetes favour bacteria which can cause cavities (蛀牙). Some medications can cause oral problems ranging from dry mouth to stained teeth.

3     More and more adults are having orthodontic (正畸) treatment to straighten their teeth. Not only does it make a huge difference to your smile, it can also prevent gum disease, which is more likely to take hold if you struggle to clean crooked teeth.

You’ve got bad breath. Halitosis (口臭) is embarrassing and can sometimes leave a nasty taste in your mouth. You might have a hole in your tooth, an infection or gum disease.     4     Your family and friends will thank you for it.

Check for cancer. Dentists don’t just look for cavities and unhealthy gums. They can also spot mouth cancer and refer patients to hospital to see a specialist. Cases have risen by 34 per cent in the past decade, according to the Oral Health Foundation.     5

A.You want to improve your confidence.
B.You think it is time to have some changes.
C.However, early diagnosis can save your life.
