Last weekend, I went to Mark’s new house near a forest for a little get-together. After lunch when I was chatting with him and his wife Cody, he asked me, “Hey, Thora, have you ever been to a secret spot?” Before I could even finish saying no, Cody and Mark were already at the door with their jackets on. And the next moment we were heading out into the forest with a camera, a fishing net and a plastic bucket (桶).

Then a beautiful lake appeared before our eyes. “Wow! Amazing!” I shouted and could hardly hold back my excitement. The lake was large and the water was deep and blue, looking so peaceful with tall trees around it.

The first part of the climb was beautiful. There were trees all around, and a dirt road for the farmers who work around there. I walked for an hour and reached a fair height. The views were beautiful, so I stopped to take a photograph. Suddenly I heard crazy barking behind me.
I turned and saw two dogs running towards me. I expected them to stop, but they didn’t. As they got closer, I could see that they were black dobermans (杜宾犬). Their teeth looked sharp, and they looked angry. There was nowhere for me to run. I tried to keep calm, but my heart was racing. They stopped a dozen feet from where I stood and kept barking. I knew they could move fast, so I didn’t want to try to run.
I kept walking, saying, “Good dog, calm down,” as peacefully as possible. But I was terrified. Then one rushed up and sunk his teeth into my leg below the knee. He held on for a few seconds. And then he came back and bit me again. The pain took my breath away as I felt his teeth in my leg. I considered bending down to get a rock to fight him off, but was nervous in case he went for my neck or the other one attacked me. I was thinking I might not get out of this alive.

I knew I was not supposed to be quite so excited. I was too old for that. At age eleven, as the oldest and my mom’s “grown-up” girl, I had to keep myself cool. I was in middle school after all. When I picked the figs with him, he told me about how he had been living in the house next door for close to twenty years. He said, “Bruce, the owner of the house you live in now, used to be my best friend. And we had planted this very fig tree a few years before he went to the nursing home.” I was amazed to know that we actually enjoyed the fruit of his work. He told me that he was so impressed by the quality of the fruit this year. I found a fruit box for him to put the figs in. Both of us enjoyed the pleasure of sharing.
When Jack set out for his home, I turned to my parents and advised doing something in return for Jack and Bruce’s kindness and friendliness.
