Every Saturday afternoon, Jimmy and his dad would go to the park to play baseball. They always walked past a homeless man who always sat at the same street corner. Jimmy’s dad always gave the man some money. “Someday, I’ll pay you back, John!” the man said. “Sure, Wayne,” Jimmy’s dad replied.
One day, Jimmy held his dad’s hand, asking, “Dad, how does that man know your name?” John answered, “Oh, when I was in college, I knew Wayne. He was on the brink (边缘) of a big discovery that could bring him a patent. Anyway, things didn’t go well for him. So whenever I see him, I give him some money. “Eva? Who is she?” I asked. “She is a lovely 10-year-old girl we adopted. Her parents died in a traffic accident. She always wants to be a singer,” the man replied. I felt sad and said, “I’m sorry for the girl. He also said that he tried to eat at least five fruits a week. It could be realized since Mark used to eat two fruits per week at most. As weeks went on, Mark found it easier to keep his resolution because he knew what he had to do. In the past, he would exercise once in a while and eat a diet only sometimes. He did not have a plan on what he was going to do at that time.
Now he did so well that he reached his goal. He felt great about the changes he was making; he felt happier and healthier gradually. He also thought about other things he could do to improve his health. This resolution encouraged him to sleep earlier and drink more water. In the past, he usually watched TV programs for a long time at night. He knew some TV series were boring, but he just couldn’t get up from the sofa because it felt so good. After that he played some video games before going to sleep. Sometimes he forgot about time and went to bed very late. No wonder he felt tired the next morning.

Every afternoon after school, the children used to go and play in the Giant’s garden.
It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass, beautiful flowers, and peach trees whose pink pearly blossoms (花) came out in spring, and that in autumn bore rich fruit. The birds sat in the trees and sang so sweetly. The children used to play games there, crying and laughing.

They used to wander around the high wall when their lessons were over, and talk about the beautiful garden inside. “How happy we were there!” they said to each other.
Then the spring came, and all over the country there were blossoms and birds. Only in the garden of the selfish Giant was it still winter. The birds did not care to sing in it as there were no children, and the trees forgot to blossom. When they saw the notice board, they were so sorry for the children. The only ones who were pleased were the snow and the frost (霜). “Spring has forgotten this garden.” they cried, “so we will live here all year round.” The snow covered up the grass, and the frost painted all the trees silver. Then they invited the cold north wind to stay with them.
“Why is the spring so late to come?” said the selfish Giant, looking out of the window at his cold white garden. “I hope there will be a change in the weather in the garden.”

If you really want it, I’ll think of some extra housework for you and in no time you can save enough money to buy it for yourself. After dinner back home, she did more housework and even she asked the neighbor for housework for ten cents. On her birthday, Grandma did give her another new dollar bill and at least she had enough money to buy the cheap necklace from the dime store (廉价商店).
Jenny loved her pearl necklace. She wore it everywhere. The only time she took it off was when swimming.
Jenny had a very loving daddy and every night when she was ready for bed, he would stop whatever he was doing and come upstairs to read her a story. One night when he finished the story, he asked Jenny, “Do you love me?”
“Oh, daddy. You know that I love you.”
“Then give me your necklace.”
“Oh, daddy, not my pearl necklace. But you can have my Barbie doll — the one you gave me. She’s my favorite.”
“That’s okay, Honey. Daddy loves you. Good night.” And he brushed her cheek with a kiss.
Daddy repeated the same request about a week after the story time. However, Jenny refused and wouldn’t give up her necklace to her daddy.
