When I was a child, I thought Dad loved my brother more than me. Dad let my little brother go with him to buy tools, repair things with hammers (锤子), etc. I always seemed to be left behind. I simply stood nearby and watched them join the father- and-son activities. How I longed for Dad to let me join them! But I knew it would never happen because I was a girl.
All of a sudden. I got a great idea: I would turn myself into a boy! After all, my brother and I looked alike. The only real difference was that he had short hair, while mine was long. “If I get my hair cut like my brother, Dad will have two sons,” I thought. I could even get my hair cut at the same shop that Dad and my brother often went. It would be perfect!
I could hardly wait for the haircut day to come. Finally, Dad announced one morning that he and my brother were going to have a haircut. “Please, can I go, too?” I begged. “Are you sure you want to go to the shop for males? Don’t you want to stay here and play with your sister?” he asked. “No,” I answered without a moment’s hesitation. “I want to go with you.”
I was delighted when Dad nodded. Surely, I hadn’t yet mentioned my plan to him. As we drove down the highway, I touched my long blond hair, imagining what my new life of hammers and nails would be like.
In just a few minutes, we entered the shop. I was the only female there. Suddenly, I felt just a little bit out of place in this man’s world. I swallowed (吞咽) hard and watched as my brother climbed expertly into the barber’s (理发师) chair. Later, I gathered the courage to ask Dad if I could get a haircut, too.
“I want a haircut like his,” I added, pointing to my brother. Surprised, Dad said, “You’d better think twice about it.” “Oh, but Dad,” I explained, “I want a real haircut just like his!”

As Christmas approached, we carried out our usual traditions of decorating the tree, baking cookies, and singing carols. Yet, there were no gifts under our tree. My children grew curious and asked where the presents were. Then I explained that we would be giving gifts to a family that truly needed them. They needed to see what it was like to need essentials such as clothing and food.
We went shopping to purchase essential items like coats, hats, gloves, socks, and shoes for the family. We also selected age-appropriate toys for their children. Next, we headed to the grocery store and filled our carts with everything they would need for a delicious Christmas dinner. We even bought extra items to help them through the winter.
Blake and Allison didn’t seem thrilled by the situation, but I hoped they were reflecting on their attitudes from the previous Christmas. I had a couple of gifts hidden in my closet, ready to reward them if they showed respect and kindness.

On November 27th last year, I was waiting to check out at a local store.
The clerk(售货员) was very busy because it was Thanksgiving Day. Besides usual snacks and daily necessities, people were buying kinds of food and flowers. It was about 5 p. m. and still light outside, but people seemed to be hurrying back to their cars. My husband and I both have to work till midnight today.”
Hearing that, the customer seemed to be lost in thought. She accepted her bag, thanked the clerk and then headed towards her old car outside the store.

A teacher in New York decided to honor each of her seniors in high school by telling them the difference they each made. First she told them how the student made a difference to her and the class. Then she presented each of them with a blue ribbon (勋带) imprinted with gold letters reading, “Who I Am Makes a Difference.”
Afterwards the teacher decided to do a class project to see what kind of impact recognition would have on a community. She gave each of the students three more ribbons and instructed them to go out and spread this acknowledgment ceremony. Then they were to follow up on the results and report back to the class in about a week.
One of the boys in the class, went to a junior executive in a nearby company and honored him for helping him with his career planning. He gave him a blue ribbon and put it on his shirt. Then he gave him two extra ribbons, saying, “We’re doing a class project on recognition. we’d like you to go out to find somebody to honor, give them a blue ribbon, then give them the extra blue ribbon, so they can acknowledge a third person to keep this acknowledgment ceremony going. Then please report back to me and tell me what has happened.”
Later that day the junior executive went to see his boss. He told the boss that he deeply admired him for being a creative genius. The boss seemed very surprised. The junior executive asked him if he would accept the gift of the blue ribbon and give him permission to put it on him. His surprised boss said, “Well, sure.” As he gave him the last extra ribbon, he said, “Would you do me a favor? Would you take this extra ribbon and pass it on by honoring somebody else? The young boy who first gave me the ribbons is doing a project in school and we want to keep this recognition ceremony going and find out how it affects people.”

Jackson’s parents died, and his neighbor Mrs Herring adopted him. The Herrings was a large, happy family.
One day, Jackson had a big argument with Mrs Herring and he packed up and left the Herrings’ house in anger. With no place to go, Jackson spent the night on the street. The next morning. Jackson was standing outside the Herrings’ home, regretting what he had done the previous night. However, he was still hesitant to enter until he heard a voice behind him say. “Where were you last night?We all were worried about you.”
After they entered the house, Mr Herring told Jackson Mrs Herring suffered a heart attack and was rushed to hospital the night after Jackson left.
Jackson felt terrible about what he had done. But he felt worse when Mr Herring told him how much Mrs Herring loved him.
“She had helped your mother during her delivery, and she was there for you when you were a baby!After you live with us, she always tries her best to make you feel at home. She really hopes you can call her Mom.”
“I was really horrible, wasn’t I?” asked Jackson. “I need to apologize to Mrs Herring. She’s done a lot for me.”
“Well, then, I have an idea,” Mr Herring said.
A few days after this, Mrs Herring returned home from the hospital to find her house decorated with balloons. And there were also flowers on the living room table, where a beautiful cake awaited her. “Happy birthday, honey, and welcome back home,” Mr Herring, said as he led her inside. On her 60th birthday, all the family members wished Mrs Herring, but her sad eyes were searching for Jackson everywhere.
“He isn’t here?” she asked sadly. “I’m sorry, honey,” said Mr Herring. “How about putting everything aside and just cutting the cake?” Mrs Herring sighed. She sat at the table and was about to blow out the candles when the doorbell rang.
