1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a beautiful day outside. The sky was a pale blue and the clouds were big and fluffy which made me delighted. I decided to take a walk in the park and enjoy the lovely weather. As I was walking, I saw a little girl sitting on a bench, looking sad and lonely. I approached her and asked if she was okay. She looked up at me with big, round eyes filled with tears and shook her head.

I sat down next to her and asked her what was wrong. She said that she had lost her doll and couldn’t find it anywhere. I offered to help her look for it and we searched the park together. We looked in every nook and cranny, behind trees and bushes, but couldn’t find the doll. We all felt frustrated and depressed. Just when we were about to give up, I saw a glimmer of pink behind a park bench. I picked up the doll and handed it to the little girl.

She was so grateful and gave me a big, warm hug. She told me that her doll was very special to her because the gift was given by her best friend who had gone abroad and she missed the best friend very much. She couldn’t thank me enough for helping her find it. As we walked back to her house, the little girl told me that she was new to the area and didn’t have any friends yet. She always felt lonely and sad and didn’t want to go to school. I comforted her and promised to come back and visit her again, and we exchanged phone numbers.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了在澳大利亚的Lajamanu下了一场鱼雨。

3 . “We’ve seen a big storm heading up to my community and we thought it was just rain,” said Japanangka, a local from Lajamanu, a town in the outback (内陆地区) of Australia. “ But when the rain started falling, we saw fish falling down. We saw some free-falling down to the ground and some falling onto the roof. It was the most amazing thing we‘ve ever seen,” Japanangka added.

Such unusual natural phenomena have been reported in the past, but Michael Hammer, an expert of fishes who have investigated such things in the past, stated that many times people just came out after the rain and saw the fish scattered (散布) everywhere. They didn’t actually see it falling out of the sky, but preferred to believe it rained from the clouds, rather than a more sensible explanation -like the fish being flooded out of a waterhole.

However, in the case of Lajamanu, there are plenty of reasons to believe that the fish did rain down during a storm. There are no watering holes near the town, and the fish picked up from the streets were recognized as spangled perch, a common freshwater fish that has no business being in Lajamanu.” “Normally, the fish is quite large and it’s not able to be drawn up out of the water and held up in the sky for very long,” Jeff Johnson said. “But clearly that’s what has happened.”

Another confusing thing about this most recent case of raining fish is that the people of Lajamanu say that at least some of the fish were alive. Dr Hammer said, “As long as they were not lifted too high and frozen mid-air, it would not be impossible for fish to keep alive as they were carried by the storm, even over long distances.”

While uncommon, raining fish isn’t unheard of. In places like Honduras, for example, it happens yearly. However, in dry places like the Australian outback, it’s surely something you don‘t expect to see, ever.

1. How does the author start the text?
A.By raising a question.B.By quoting a local’s words.
C.By listing some numbers.D.By making comparisons.
2. What is one of the reasons why people believed the fish in Lajamanu was brought by the storm?
A.The fish’s size.B.The fish’s weight.
C.The species of the fish.D.The number of the fish.
3. What is the purpose of Dr Hammer’s words?
A.To express his doubt about the fish rain.B.To explain why some fish were alive.
C.To share his experience of fish rain.D.To show his research on fish rain.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.A big storm happened in AustraliaB.Why is fish rain in Australia special?
C.Fish rain happened in an Australian townD.Why are there strange weather phenomena?

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。本文回忆了二十多年前额一个深夜,作者免费开出租车把一位时日无多的年老女士送往疗养院的过程。

4 . Twenty years ago, I was a taxi driver. One night I received a call at 12:30 am. When I arrived at the address, the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window. I waited for a while, and no one showed up. In this case, many drivers would just honk (按喇叭).

But I feared this passenger might be someone who was in need. So I walked to the door and knocked.“ Just a minute ,” answered an elderly lady. A few minutes later, a small woman in her 80’s stood before me. I helped her take the suitcase to the taxi. She kept thanking me.

Then she gave me an address, and asked, “Could you drive through downtown?” “It’s not the shortest way,” I answered. She said, “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice (疗养院).” “The doctor says I don’t have very long time to live. And I don’t have any family left,” she continued. I quietly reached over and shut off the meter.

For the next two hours we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived. Sometimes she’d ask me to slow in front of a particular building and stare into the darkness, saying nothing.

When morning broke, we arrived at the address. She asked, “How much should I pay you?” “Nothing,” I said. She thanked me and said ,“ You give an old woman a little moment of joy.” Then behind me, a door was shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.

We’re conditioned to think that our lives center on great moments. But great moments catch us unawares. When that woman said that I had brought her a moment of joy, I had good reasons to believe that I had been placed on earth for the single purpose of providing her with that last ride. I do not think that I have ever done anything in my life that was any more important.

1. Why did the author walk to the door and knock ?
A.He thought the passenger might need help.B.He didn ‘ t want to miss any passenger.
C.He was annoyed with the passenger.D.He wanted to rush the passenger.
2. For what purpose did the woman ask the author to drive through downtown ?
A.To take a short cut.B.To return the author ‘ s kindness.
C.To be in memory of her husband.D.To say goodbye to some special places.
3. Which of the following can best describe the author ?
A.Patient and outgoing.B.Honest and humorous.
C.Warmhearted and generous.D.Responsible and hardworking.

An unexpected change on the road

It was a damp evening in September 2013 when I landed in Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak in Malaysia. I was a 19-year-old Dubai-raised kid away from home for the first time to start my undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering.

Alone and homesick, the wet welcome I received at the airport didn’t make me feel any better. I had never travelled alone before and the seven-hour flight from Dubai was the longest flight I had ever taken. I pushed my luggage and headed to the airport exit to find a grey van with the name of my university on it. My ride, I assumed, and I was right.

As we left the airport, the driver began talking to me; he told me that I was the last of the new students he had to pick up that day. He shared information with me about the city and its people and what I should see and do. As I am a driving enthusiast myself, we started talking about cars and driving in Dubai and his accounts of driving in Kuching.

“Never make a Sarawakian angry” he warned. “No road rage (路怒). Very dangerous!” He then went on to list his experiences of road rage and by the time he had finished, I had made up my mind to be very passive on the roads.

Not long into our journey, the lights of the car behind flashed at us. This continued more aggressively and my driver started to panic. We pulled over to the roadside in a well-lit area. My heart was pounding but I tried to put on a brave face as the man from the car emerged and made his way to my side of the van. As he reached my window, I lowered it and tried to force a smile. He reached into the van and I let out a loud “Whoa (used to tell someone to become calmer)!”

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了作者作为一个外国人在北京乘坐地铁到酒店时一路上的冒险经历。

6 . After I made it to the city center, I started to feel it might be easy for a foreigner to deal with the great size of Beijing. With growing confidence, I decided to take the subway to the hotel, not realizing that the network didn’t go that far. Impressed with the cleanliness of the station, I bought a ticket and boarded the first subway that came along.

After a few minutes I asked in English a young man seated next to me where I should get off closest to the Friendship Hotel. Wearing a smart business suit and tie, he would surely speak English, wouldn’t he? Unfortunately, he couldn’t understand me but seemed very friendly. I showed him the room card with all the information of the Friendship Hotel in Chinese characters. He looked at it, and then his eyes moved quickly to the carriage (车厢) subway map. Next, he raised three fingers of his right hand.

In Australia, raising fingers at someone is not usually nice, but this man wasn’t smiling. At the next station he showed me two fingers. Now in Australia, that’s really rude, but I got the message. When we stopped at the third station, he didn’t just point to the door, but got up, took me out of the train, and led me to the top of the stairs, and out onto the street. Then he stopped a taxi and told the driver where to take me.

All this came from a man who couldn’t speak my language, and I couldn’t speak his. I was now speechless, especially when he refused my offer of money. I felt a little embarrassed having even thought he would accept a tip.

This experience made it clear I had to learn some Chinese quickly or my adventures might start turning into misadventures.

1. Why does the author decided to take the subway?
A.Because he believed in his ability to deal with the trip
B.Because the network covered most of the stops
C.Because he lived near the city center

2. Having been shown the room card, the young man        .
A.still remained puzzledB.understood the author well

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ada looked through the observation window at the kids below, all waiting in line to get into the pool. She turned to her mother with an angry expression on her face. “Mom, they’re all little kids! I’m 15 already! This is ridiculous, isn’t ?”

“I know, Ada,” replied her mother, “but you’re a beginner, too, and you have to start somewhere!”

Ada had never been to a swimming lesson in her life. Between schoolwork and helping on her grandfather’s farm, she hadn’t had time for lessons. The closest swimming pool Ada had been to was the inflatable (充气的) alligator pool her mother bought her when she was five. Now that Ada was older, her mother had found a new job in the city, and Ada faced a new challenge — school field trips to the local pool.

The first day that Ada went with her class to the pool, she had no idea what she was in for. What could be so difficult about swimming? Ada confidently slipped(溜) into the water and held onto the side of the pool, expecting to be able to touch the bottom with her feet. But when Ada let go of the side of the pool, she slipped under the water—the whole pool was one big deep end! Ada threw her arm toward the side of the pool and grabbed (抓住) the ledge (池壁), out of breath. “I really can’t swim! Everyone’s going to laugh at me!” she thought to herself in a panic.

On the next field trip to the pool, Ada sat on the side of a bench, frozen with fear. She huddled (蜷缩) with a towel over her shoulders, too embarrassed to try again. When she came home, her mother noticed right away that Ada was upset. “Honey, I want you to take Bella’s swimming lessons at the local pool. Soon you’ll learn how to swim just like everyone else,” she convinced Ada, showing photos of Bella with her prize-winning students. Ada felt doubtful whether the lessons would help, but she had to overcome her fear.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

We sat on the bus waiting while other passengers piled on. A blond-haired girl, about fifteen years old, took the seat in front of us. The bus driver followed behind her. He demanded her fare (车费).

“You should pay $40, young lady,” the driver said.

“I paid already. Yesterday, online.” the girl said.

“No, no record of it,” the bus driver pointed to the paper in his hand and waved it in her face. “See? No pay. You pay, or you must get off,” the bus driver pointed to the exit door.

“But I don’t have money. And I paid already,” the girl insisted.

The bus driver picked up his mobile phone and made a call to find out if there had been an error with the paperwork. And a few minutes later, he cut the call and said to the girl. “You haven’t paid. You must pay now.”

“But please, I don’t have any money on me now. I must get to Los Angeles today. Please…” the girl begged. Tears streamed down her face.

John and I had boarded the bus heading to Los Angeles. I was excited about experiencing Los Angeles. But while I was sitting there comfortably in my seat, thinking about my next adventure, this girl was in tears, with a man standing in front of her to demand money.

I wasn’t sure what I should do. Was she telling the truth? It wouldn’t be the first time that someone had asked for money by telling a sad story that turned out untrue. Was she really short of money? Maybe the bus driver would show some sympathy and allow her to sort the payment out later?

But no, the bus driver continued to demand that she pay $40 or get off the bus. The girl insisted that she didn’t have money for the fare and had no one she could contact for help. It seemed that the driver would throw her off the bus.

Sean was a single father of three kids who had just lost their mother to cancer. Shortly afterwards, he had to sell his house to pay the medical bills. Worse still, he had to quit his job as a regional manager due to too many absences he acquired in taking care of his wife while she was sick. Their lives sank into extreme poverty. He had to do part-time work to pay off his debts. He never imagined what his life would become. Everything felt hopeless. Anyway, he continued with his life, earning barely enough money to feed his kids.

Today was a bit different. He went to the nearest gas station after work.He had an extra $2 with which he could buy himself a cheap hot dog. It was a little treat he would give himself. As he walked toward the gas station, he saw a man panicking, saying something to a woman in the car. Not knowing why they were so worried,he continued walking until the man called out to him.

“Sir, I’m so sorry to ask, but my wife is in labor(临产), and we’re out of gas. I left my wallet and phone at home as we were rushing out of the house. Is there any way you can help me?” the man said. His desperate eyes pulled at Sean’s heartstrings.

“Well, sir. I only have 2 dollars, but you can have it!” Sean said, reaching into his pocket and producing the 2 dollars. “Thank you! That works. I have a few coins in the car, but I can get a gallon and reach the hospital with that.” The man took the bills gratefully.

“I’m Matthew. Please give me your contact information so I can pay you back.” “No need. I only hope you and your wife get to the hospital safely,” Sean smiled. But Matthew insisted. Finally, Sean gave him his number.
