1 . Finding the Owner

"It's mine," said Fred, showing a pocketknife with a shining blade (刀片) "Just what I've always wanted. "And he turned it over and over with the look of satisfaction on his face.

"I guess I know who owns it," said Tom, looking at it carefully.

"I guess you don't. It isn't Mr. Raymond's," Fred replied quickly.

"I know. Mr. Raymond's is twice as large," said Tom, going on with his drawing.

Tom's doubt was taking away Fred's enjoyment. In fact, Fred was not comfortable with the knife at all, for he felt that he was having something that did not belong to him and he got worried. He even had serious thoughts of burning it, or hiding it, or giving it away; but a better plan hit him.

"Tom," said Fred, one day at break, "didn't you say that you knew who owned the knife?"

"Yes, I did. It looked like Doctor Perry's," Tom ran off to play with others, without giving the knife another thought.

It was Dr. Perry's ! Fred looked at his watch and realized he only had a little time, so he started quickly, and found the old gentleman getting ready to visit a patient. "Is this yours?" cried Fred, in breathless haste, holding up the cause of a week's anxiety.

"It was," said the doctor, "but I lost it the other day."

"I found it," said Fred, "and have felt like a thief ever since. Here, take it. I've got to run. "

"Hold on!" said the doctor. "I've got a new one, and you are quite welcome to this."

2 . Shopping is a necessary (必须的) part of life for almost everyone. Some people shop for fun while other people go shopping to buy the necessary items (物品) in order to live. The weekend is usually a good time to go shopping because people have free time from work. At this time the shops are usually very busy because people try to get the best items for the lowest price.

Some people look around in shops even when they do not have much money. This is called window shopping. It helps people to plan ahead and save money for the things they want to buy in the future or wait for the items to drop in price. Some people spend a lot of time looking for bargains while others do not think of the price and are happy to spend a lot. Some people believe that the more expensive the item, the better the quality (质量), but this is not always true. It is clever to buy items which you have enough money to pay for, but some people use a credit (信用) card or borrow money from the bank so that they can buy the items they really want.

Shopping online is often popular with people who have a busy lifestyle. People are able to order their items comfortably at their own home, or even on the move. Delivery(运送)is usually free and items are often cheaper than in shops on the high street. The only real problem is that the item may be different from what they hoped for. This means the buyer may become disappointed (失望的) with the item they receive and will need to spend money to return it. When people go to shops to do their shopping, they can see the products clearly and they often pay on machines to save time. However, it can be disappointing when the machine has a problem and the sales assistant cannot help.

1. What does the underlined word "bargains" probably mean?
A.Cheap things.B.Important things.
C.Necessary things.D.Low—quality things.
2. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.How to buy things online and in shops.
B.How to save time and money when shopping.
C.Problems with shopping and the ways to solve them.
D.Advantages and disadvantages of different ways of shopping.
3. The writer believes________.
A.expensive things always have good qualities
B.window shopping make people spend a lot of money
C.shopping online is much better than shopping in shops
D.it is clever to only spend the money you have to buy things

3 . When I was about 10, there were lots of us bored, bookish children in the 1970s. Television was largely rubbish, and our parents’ bookshelves were what was left. I thought of this when I heard author Claire Tomalin complain that children are growing up without the skills to read classic works of English literature, such as Charles Dickens and that they are not being taught to have the lengthy attention spans (时段) necessary for his texts. She blames this attention shortfall on the terrible television programmes.

It is true that children have never had more entertainment (娱乐) to choose from than today. And it is probably true that this generation’s attention span is shorter; my children have dismissed as “too slow” or “boring” most of the childhood books I saved for them. I was quite upset about this until I reread some. It is not just entertainment that moves at a faster rate. The world does, too. And, frankly, Dickens is dense, and hard work, as are many writers of that period.

Another fact is that not many children of my generation read Dickens for pleasure either. It took me years to come to Great Expectations and The Pickwick Papers, and then it was only post-university when I became independently hungry for knowledge.

Dickens might be one of the greatest creators of characters in English, as Tomalin says, but today’s children see Greg Heffley’s nature in The Wimpy Kid of Jeff Kinney’s novels. And they are so interested in the resourceful Baudelaire children in Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. They can recognize the adolescent difficult situation of Harry Potter.

You can’t insist that childhood tastes not change for a long time. My mother encouraged me to read anything on the basis that all reading was valuable, and would act as a gateway to more challenging works later on. In turn, I believe that my children will come to the classics when they’re ready. Until then, I’ll take comfort from the fact that the 1969 classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar is still the most-read children’s book in Britain. It has underdeveloped characterization, yes, and the vocabulary is limited. But as a starter to give children an appetite (食欲) for reading, it is priceless.

1. What is important for children reading Dickens according to Claire Tomalin?
A.Vocabulary.B.Patience.C.Knowledge.D.Taste.
2. Which of the following would the author agree with about Dickens?
A.They are difficult to understand.
B.Their vocabulary is old and limited.
C.They are the entrance to other literature works.
D.Their characters are better created than today’s works.
3. The author thinks it ________ that children nowadays don’t like Dickens.
A.understandableB.worryingC.disappointingD.interesting
4. What’s the topic of the passage?
A.Attention span.B.Classic works.C.Reading skills.D.Children’s reading.

4 .

Have you ever wondered about people’s names? Where do they come from? What do they mean?

People’s first names, or given names, are chosen by their parents. Sometimes the name of a grandparent or another member of the family is used. Some parents choose the name of a well-known person. A boy could be named George Washington Smith; a girl could be named Helen Keller Jones. Some people give their children names that mean good things. Clara means “bright”; Beatrice means “one who gives happiness”; Donald means “world ruler”; Leonard means “as brave as a lion”.

The earliest last names, or surnames, were taken from place names. A family with the name Brook or Brooks probably lived near brook(小溪); someone who was called Longstreet probably lived on a long, paved road. The Greenwood family lived in or near a leafy forest.

Other early surnames came from people’s occupations(职业). The most common occupational name is Smith, which means a person who makes things with iron or other metals. In the past, smiths were very important workers in every town and village. Some other occupational names are: Carter — a person who owned or drove a cart; Potter — a person who made pots and pans. The ancestors(祖先) of the Baker family probably baked bread for their neighbors in their native village. The Carpenter’s great-great-great-grandfather probably built houses and furniture.

Sometimes people were known for the color of their hair or skin, or their size, or their special abilities. When there were two men who were named John in the same village, the John with the gray hair probably became John Gray. Or the John was very tall could call himself John Tallman. John Fish was probably an excellent swimmer and John Lightfoot was probably a fast runner or a good dancer.

Some family names were made by adding something to the father’s name. English-speaking people added –s or –son. The Johnsons are descendants(后代) of John; the Roberts family’s ancestor was Robert. Irish and Scottish people added Mac or Mc or O. Perhaps all of the MacDonnells and the McDonnells and the O’Donnells are descendants of the same Donnell.

1. Which of the following things do the family names in the passage NOT cover(涉及)?
A.Places where people lived.B.People’s characters.
C.Talents that people had.D.People’s occupations.
2. According to the passage, the ancestors of the Potter family most probably _______.
A.owned or drove a cartB.made things with metals
C.built houses and furnitureD.made kitchen tools or containers(容器)
3. Suppose(假如) an English couple whose ancestors lived near a leafy forest wanted their new-born son to become a world leader, the baby might be named _______.
A.George LongstreetB.Leonard Carter
C.Donald GreenwoodD.Beatrice Smith
4. What is the passage mainly about? ________.
A.When people have their names.B.How people choose their first names.
C.How people choose their last names.D.Where people’s names come from.

5 . To eat only a vegan (素食的) diet might sound difficult, especially with many popular dishes containing meat or other animal products. Yet in 2017, veganism was described as "the fastest-growing lifestyle movement " in the UK, according to BBC news.

A study by a UK market research organization, suggests that over 542,000 Brits went vegan during the previous 10 years, an increase of 360%. And the main force behind this increase was those aged 15—34 years old—42% of recent vegans fall under that age range.

So why exactly has veganism (素食主义) become so popular among young Brits?

One reason could be that many young people want to protect the environment, eating less meat is known to be beneficial to the environment. Global meat industry is believed to cause 18% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions (排放), even more than that of all the world's cars, trains and planes combined. Another reason is that many of today's young people believe that it's wrong to kill animals to be used as food.

Jess Murray, 22, a student at University College London, said that he chose to become vegan after realizing that eating animals is a choice that people make, rather than something that we need to do to survive. "Becoming vegan was an ethical (道德的) decision," he told the Guardian.

Social media is also believed to have given rise to the increase in veganism.

Platforms such as Facebook allow young vegans to connect with each other much easier, while others such as Instagram have led to the creation of "vegan celebrities (名人)", who share lips on vegan lifestyles.

Despite the rising of veganism, Laura Wyness, an expert in diet and nutrition, said that meat is very important for people's health. "A strict vegan diet makes it difficult to get some minerais and vitamins that your body needs," Wyness told BBC news.

However, veganism doesn't seem to become less popular. "It feels more like this is something that is sticking." said an expert of the Vegan Society, a UK charity that encourages veganism.

1. What can we learn about veganism, "the fastest-growing lifestyle movement" in UK?
A.It has grown sharply in the past 10 years.
B.It is supported mainly by old people.
C.It has led to further market research.
D.It has created many popular dishes.
2. The following may be the reason for the increase in veganism EXCEPT ________.
A.Young people prefer an environment-friendly life.
B.Meat industry increases the world's greenhouse gas.
C.Young people want to become ethical celebrities.
D.Social media allow the vegan message to spread quickly around.
3. The underlined word "sticking" in the last paragraph means _________.
A.importantB.specialC.impressiveD.lasting
4. What is the passage mainly about?
A.Veganism is bad for people's health.B.Young Brits are going vegan.
C.How to start a vegan lifestyle.D.Veganism is good for the environment

6 . Give yourself a test. Which way is the wind blowing? How many kinds of wildflowers can be seen from your front door? If your awareness is as sharp as it could be, you’ll have no trouble answering these questions.

Most of us observed much more as children than we do as adults. A child’s day is filled with fascination, newness and wonder. Curiosity gave us all a natural awareness. But differences that were sharp to us as children become unclear; we are numb (麻木的) to new stimulation (刺激), new ideas. Relearning the art of seeing the world around us is quite simple, although it takes practice and requires breaking some bad habits.

The first step in awakening senses is to stop predicting what we are going to see and feel before it happens. This blocks awareness. One chilly night when I was hiking in the Rocky Mountains with some students, I mentioned that we were going to cross a mountain stream. The students began complaining about how cold it would be. We reached the stream, and they unwillingly walked ahead. They were almost knee-deep when they realized it was a hot spring. Later they all admitted they’d felt cold water at first.

Another block to awareness is the obsession (痴迷) with naming things. I saw bird watchers who spotted a bird, immediately looked it up in field guides, and said, a “ruby-crowned kinglet (红冠戴菊鸟) “ and checked it off. They no longer paid attention to the bird and never learned what it was doing.

The pressures of “time” and “destination” are further blocks to awareness. I came across many hikers who were heading to a distant camp-ground with just enough time to get there before dark. They seldom walked around a bit, to take a moment to see what’s around them. I asked them what they’d seen. “Oh, a few birds,” they said. They seemed to only pay attention to their destinations.

Nature seems to unfold to people who watch and wait. Next time you take a walk, no matter where it is, take in all the sights, sounds and sensations. Think in this way and you will see a new world in your life.

A.To admit mistakes honestly.B.To stop complaining all the time.
C.To follow the teacher's advice.D.To avoid jumping to conclusions.

A.They focus on arriving at the camp in time.
B.The natural beauty isn't attractive to them.
C.The forest in the dark is dangerous for them.
D.They are keen to see rare birds at the destination.
4. In the passage, the author wants to tell us we should __________.

7 . Good manners play an important part in maintaining peace in society. A man with good manners doesn’t hurt others’ feelings, and therefore he’s on good terms with everyone. In this way he helps to keep the peace in society.

But a man with bad manners has no respect for others. He uses words carelessly and behaves rudely towards others and causes a lot of unpleasantness. In the end, he himself will suffer the most. Everyone avoids him and he is forced to live alone.

To live well in society, money alone is not enough. Even the richest man cannot afford to have bad manners. He may have enough money to buy all things he wants; but if his manners are bad, he will have no friends, and no one can live happily without friends.

We should have good manners, for it’s human nature to try to get friendship; and friendship has to be earned through our own attitude towards others. If we are kind to others, they will be kind to us, and kindness is the most basic quality of good manners. Bad manners drive away friends as well as our own family members.

On the other hand, a man with good manners has many friends. He commands the respect of all those who come into contact with him. He doesn’t talk ill about others. Even when he’s provoked, he tries his best not to upset others. He also feels sorry about the weak and the disabled.

There are, however, many people who behave so well outside their homes that they are respected by everyone outside. But in their own homes they are worse than the devil(魔鬼). Such people cannot be said to have good manners. Their behavior will soon be discovered by others.

If one’s manners are good, one behaves well everywhere, even when one is away from the critical(爱挑剔的)eyes of others. Only such a person can live well in society.

1. People with good manners bring society _____.
A.peaceB.enjoymentC.respectD.friendship
2. What does the author mainly want to tell us in Paragraph 4 ?
A.People are born friendly.
B.Bad manners make people lose friends.
C.Money is not the most important.
D.Kind people will be treated kindly.
3. The underlined word“provoked”in the passage may mean _____.
A.tiredB.sadC.made angryD.left alone
4. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Kindness is important.
B.Friendship is important.
C.Good manners are important.
D.People with bad manners can’t live well.

8 . Next time you hear yourself wishing for something better in your life, remember the word “SMART”. When you’ve decided to take action, read the following first.

S is for specific: For example, instead of setting a goal of “I want to lose weight”, set yourself a specific goal like “I want to lose five kilograms”. If you want to climb a high mountain, start your research, set a date and train for the climbing fitness.

M is for measurable: Don’t try to “become healthy”, instead, set a goal that can be measured while carrying out an improved eating, exercise or lifestyle plan. For example, try to go to the gym for an hour three times a week, to visit your grandma once a week for an evening meal, or to eat no more than 200 grams of chocolate a week.

A is for achievable: If you’ve never exercised in your life, don’t try to take part in the 2020 Olympics. Rather, get walking with a specific goal of how many steps to take a day. No need to try for the stars—baby steps are good.

R is for relevant: Many of us choose goals that seem right, but are in fact wrong. They may go on for a few weeks before they fail. Try to avoid making the same mistake—rather choose goals that really speak to you.

T is for time-conscious: Finally, be very clear in your mind about how much time you are giving yourself to achieve the goal. That way, you know when you’ve succeeded, failed or whether you need to work harder to finish it before the last day.

1. According to the passage, the writer tells us how to_______.
A.lose weightB.take exercise
C.set a goalD.spend time
2. What does the word “SMART” mean in the passage?
A.Five exercise plans.B.Five suggestions.

9 . A Special Card

“Attention, everyone!” Miss Dalrymple looked at her class of ten-year-olds. “Today we are going to create a special card for Father’s Day, which falls on this weekend.” Then she busied herself handing out the paper and art materials to her noisy pupils.

They were a mixed punch. Some came from the rich side of the town, but the majorities(大部分)were from parents who struggled to get jobs. So she had not been eager to carry out this activity.

“Think about all the things that your dad does that makes him special,” she said loudly as she came up to the last table. “You can write a poem or short story that makes your dad special. The written part of this activity should be completed before you start to decorate your card.”

Andrew looked at the blank page. He had never met, spoken to, or been hugged by his dad, so how could he write about him? Once when he was looking in his grandma’s photo box, he had seen an old black and white photo but it was badly creased (弄皱) and difficult to recognize any clear features(特点). Grandma had quickly taken it from him and buried it deeply among the rest, never to be found again. After thinking for a while, he wrote:

Dear Dad,

You are a person I do not know and would probably not recognize as I only saw an old photo of you a long time ago. I think and wonder about you often, especially when I have no one to talk to. One day when I grow up I will do an Internet search to find you, but I am not sure whether I will be successful as several efforts by the Child Support Agency have not been successful.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad.

Love,

Andrew
