3 . Have you wondered why different animals or pests(害虫 )have their particular colors? Colors in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.

Birds, especially seagulls are very fond of locusts(蝗虫), but birds can’t easily catch locusts because locusts change their colors together with the change of the color of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But when crops are ripe(成熟), locusts take on exactly the same brown color as crops have. Some other pests with different colors from plants are usually easily found and eaten by their enemies. So they have to hide themselves in terror for lives and appear only at night.

If you study the animal life in any part of the world, you will find the main use of coloring is to protect themselves. Bears, wolves and other beasts move quietly through forests. They are usually invisible (看不见的)to the eyes of hunters, because they have the color much like the barks(树皮) of trees.

There was a Greek shopkeeper in a small corner shop in London.   She taught me about the great power of an act of kindness.

6 . It’s more and more often for us to see wild animals enter cities. This gives people in cities more chances to learn about wildlife but also leads to conflicts (冲突) between people and wildlife.

In Berlin, pigs sometimes come into the city to look for food. They eat flowers and plants in parks and gardens. Some people like them and give them food and water. Other people don’t like them. They want the government and the police to stop pigs entering the city.

Animals can be dangerous when they are big enough. In Cape Town in South Africa, baboons (狒狒) come into the city when they are hungry. They go into gardens and eat fruit from trees. They even go into houses and take food from cupboards and fridges! They are big and strong animals, so they can scare people. But the city can be dangerous for baboons too. Sometimes, cars and buses kill baboons in accidents. People’s food is very bad for the baboons’ teeth because it has a lot of sugar.

8 . For thousands of years, humans have explored (探索) the Earth. Nowadays, we are exploring space. Astronomers (天文学家) are the modern day explorers. Now, many astronomers are looking for new planets and new places for humans to live in the future. But where do astronomers start looking?

First of all, astronomers look for a star. That's because our own Earth moves around a star (the Sun).More importantly, it is the correct distance (距离) from the Sun for heat and light. So when astronomers have found the star, they look at the planets around it. In recent years, astronomers have found nearly 400 new planets with stars. However, many of these planets are either too near the star or too far away.

However, if the planet is in a good position, astronomers look for three key things: water, air and rock. Water is important because all life needs water. Humans can drink it and also grow plants with water. And plants produce air for humans to breathe and food to eat. Rock on a planet is also important. That’s because there is often water under the rock.

After many years of scrutinizing, astronomers have found a planet that is similar to the Earth. It’s Gliese 581g and it’s near a star. The astronomers think it has water and rock and the average (平均) temperature is between-31°C and-12°C. That’s cold, but not colder than Antarctica or the Arctic Circle, for example. Gliese 581g is bigger than the Earth. A year on Gliese 581g is only 37 Earth days instead of 365.But astronomers do not think these are big differences and some of them think Gliese 581g will be a new Earth. However, Gliese 581g is twenty light years from the Earth.

1. What do astronomers have to find first before starting to look for a new place for humans to live?
A.A new star.B.A new planet.C.Some heat.D.Some light.
2. What does the rock on a planet tell us?
A.The star is in a right position.
B.We may discover water under it.
C.The planet is too near to the Sun.
D.There can be air around the rock.
3. What does the underlined word “scrutinizing” mean in the last paragraph?
A.discussingB.waitingC.lookingD.traveling
4. What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Gliese 581g is already a new Earth.
B.There are planets similar to our Earth.
C.Water, air and rock are important.
D.Astronomers are looking for a new Earth.
5. Where does the passage probably come from?
A.A storybook.B.A travel guide.C.A film poster.D.A science magazine.

9 . Think of a simple object—a piece of chalk, for example. Are you remembering its name, its shape, its color or its size? Are you remembering what it is used for, or the sound it makes when the teacher writes on the blackboard? Scientists say that memory includes different parts of the brain, such as language and the ability of sense. They believe that you begin to create a memory when you notice something with your senses. Then, messages are sent to different brain cells, which join together to form connections. A new connection goes into your short-term memory. It is stored there for about 30 seconds, and then it is either lost or stored in your long-term memory.

Having a good memory means making lots of connections and storing them in your long-term memory. To do this, you need to keep your brain in good shape. Eat plenty of brain food such as fish oil, fruit and vegetables. Laughter also makes your brain more active. Also, don’t forget to exercise. So do some sports or just move around a lot in the house. Finally, get plenty of sleep. This will make your memories grow stronger.

When you want to remember new information, you must pay special attention. Use your senses-sight, smell, hearing and touch-and keep repeating the information. To do well in your exams this year, turn off the TV, silence your mobile, and review your work regularly. To remember something special, use your imagination to create visual (视觉的) connections. For example, you need to take a pencil, an eraser, your ID card and chips to your next exam. Imagine the ID card as the body of an animal, the pencil its long neck, and the eraser its head. Your animal is hungry, so now imagine it eating a bag of chips. It may sound crazy, but it’s fun and it works. Another way is to do something different to your room. Turn a picture upside-down, or tie a sock around the door handle to remind (提醒) yourself of something to remember!

1. At the beginning, the writer gives an example to________.
A.lead in the topic of the article
B.show the importance of chalk
C.let readers remember the word
D.make readers know his favorite
2. How many ways are mentioned to have a good memory in Paragraph 2?
A.2.B.3.C.4.D.5.
3. The main idea of the third paragraph is________.
A.how to do well in exams
B.how to remember new information
C.why review your work
D.what to eat to make memories stronger
4. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Memory has nothing to do with languages.
B.Laughter can help to improve our memory.
C.A picture of eating chips is the most useful.
D.Our brain is difficult to keep in good shape.
