1 . It was a sunny Sunday afternoon. I stopped at a teahouse to enjoy a cup of tea. Suddenly, I felt a hand on the back of my jacket and heard someone say, “Hi, David! How are you doing?”

Looking back, I saw a man. He looked familiar, but I couldn’t remember where we had met.

The young man also held a cup of tea, so I asked him to join me. Very soon, his story began to evoke my memory.

His name is Peter. Six years earlier, Peter was driving back home late on a February night. A heavy snow had arrived that afternoon, and by midnight, the snowdrifts (雪堆) were getting deep. His car was stuck in a snowdrift just down the road from my house.

He walked to my house for help. I helped him pull his car out of the snowdrift and up to the street where the snow had been cleaned away.

This was a normal happening here during the winter. I couldn’t count the times someone has helped me to pull my car from a snowdrift. However, it was an unforgettable experience for him. He was only eighteen at that time, and he said he was very afraid. No one wants to be stuck in a snowdrift at night.

"Stay in line." Mrs. Martin said. I knew right away that my friend Naomi wouldn't be able to cut. I looked at Naomi and frowned(皱眉). Soon, the line began to move faster, and I followed along hoping that there would still be pizza.

When I reached the counter, I looked at the choices. I could only see chicken and mashed potatoes, Italy noodles and fish. I could hear the rumbling(隆隆声) of my very disappointed stomach.

Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw one last piece of Hawaii pizza. I got so excited about it.

"Hawaii pizza," I said politely. Mrs. Martin handed me the pizza. I took the paper plate so quickly that the pizza fell off the plate. I tried to save it, but the pizza landed in the hot, mashed potatoes.

I could feel my face turning redder and redder, All I could hear was laughter from the kids in line.

As I looked at the upside down pizza, I heard Mrs. Martin's voice, "Maria, would you like a side of mashed potatoes with your pizza?"

I looked up and saw Naomi. She was laughing, too. With a nervous smile, I said, "Of course."

Mrs. Martin smiled and put the mashed potato pizza on my plate. I looked around at my friends, and we all laughed again.

4 . How can you remember a song from your childhood to this day? Why do your teachers use songs to teach you English? It seems there is a scientific reason for this.

Researchers are now studying the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They find that remembering words in a song is the best way to remember even the most difficult language.

“Singing could be a new way of learning a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are used in a catchy and meaningful way” said Dr Karen Ludke. The findings may help those who have difficulty leaning foreign languages. On his blog Dr Ludke wrote “A listen-and-repeat singing method can support foreign language leaning and open the door for future research in this area.”

Many language teachers know the value of using and singing. Hua Zhuying a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington D. C. depends heavily on songs in teaching Chinese. She says “I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. For little kids usually we use English songs but teach them the Chinese lyrics. So it's easy for them to start because they know the music. Not only does it work but it is fun for the kids.”

The bike that the service company provides has GPS or Bluetooth on it, and those bikes can be easily unlocked with a smart phone and left anywhere in public. Bike-sharing allows people to borrow a bike from one place and return it at another place easily.

In some cities, we can see more and more people riding this kind of sharing-bikes. It's very convenient to use the bikes if you have a smart phone. First, you have to download such an APP on your smart phone. Then what you need to do is to find a nearest bike through the APP, scan the QR code on the bike or connect your phone with the bike over a Bluetooth wireless connection. You will find the bike can be unlocked itself. Then you can enjoy your trip. What's more, the greatest advantage of bike-sharing is that you can easily find one and never worry about where to park it. The cost of riding depends on the time that you spend. 10 . There was a time when hot summer days brought children outdoors to local rivers to catch minnows (米诺鱼). Walking in cool rushing water to catch the small, silver fish was a fun chance on a hot summer's day. Before setting out for the river in their neighborhood, however, children first had to look for a bag. Both boys and girls loved this outdoor activity a lot.

While reaching the side of the river, the children pulled off their shoes and socks and put their feet first into the cold water. Walking carefully in the water, they looked for the right place where the minnows flashed (闪光). Catching minnows was very easy if two children worked together. Taking two corners of the bag, each child stood in the water and slowly lowered the bag until it was at the bottom of the river. Then, standing very still (静止的), the children waited for the fish in the river to do normal activity. The children would again get a corner of the bag in each hand and raise the bag straight up quickly, keeping it as level as possible. Lots of tiny silver fish would cover the bag.

The joy of catching minnows is that, once caught, the fish are thrown back into the water to continue their natural lives. Perhaps they will be taken up by other children and then return to their watery home again. So the bag is lowered back into the river, and the small fish swim off. Then the whole process is repeated once more as more minnows are caught and then released (释放).
