2 . Many people don’t know that junk has become a problem in outer space. According to BBC News, there are more than 22, 000 pieces of space junk floating around the earth. And some of     1     are just the things that we just can see from the surface of the earth by telescopes. Objects, like bits of old space rockets or satellites, move around the planet at very     2     /haɪ/ speeds. Therefore, even a very small piece can break important satellites or become dangerous to     3     (astronaut). To make things     4     (bad), when two objects in space crash, they break into many smaller pieces. For example, when a U.S. satellite hit     5     old Russian rocket in 2009, it broke into more than 2,000 pieces, increasing the amount of space junk. Many scientists are     6     /ˈɔ:lsəʊ/ suggesting different ways to clean up space junk. In England, scientists are testing a metal net that can be     7    (send) into space. The net catches the junk and then pulls it     8     the earth’s atmosphere to burn up. The Germans are building robots that can collect pieces of space junk and bring them back to Earth to be     9    (safe)destroyed. “The problem is becoming more challenging because we’re sending more objects into space to help people     10     /ju:s/ their mobile phones and computers.” says Marco Castronuovo, an Italian space researcher.

If you take a spaceship, you will get there in more than three days. The spaceship goes very fast, at 11 kilometers a second. In 1969 two Americans got on the moon by spaceship.

There are no living things on the moon b    4     there is no air or water there. That's why people can't l    5     there. But you may know you can jump much higher there than on the earth. It's fun, isn't it?

I hope some day we Chinese will get to the moon, too.

6 . Is there intelligent (有智力的) life on other planets? For years, scientists said “no." or “we don't know." But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers(天文学家). They believe intelligent life exists (存在) somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact these beings(人:生物).

Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. "This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life," say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size—the universe is huge. "Tools like the Hubble Telescope(哈勃望远镜) have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies," says Shostak. "And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to Earth.

In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes(高倍望远镜) allow scientists to discover smaller planets—the size of Mars or Earth—in other solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.

Have beings from space already visited Earth? "Probably not," says Shostak. "It's a long way. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other way, such as radio signals(信号). In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don't have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other.

1. How many galaxies are there in the universe?

2. Which galaxy is Earth in?

3. What allows scientists to discover smaller planets?

8 . Hey! The people of the earth. Can you hear this radio message? Do not be afraid! We come in peace from another planet— and why not? We are your cousins. We are men, as you are. We have been here before.

You will see a huge spaceship, a few hours from now. We are flying towards the solar system (太阳系) almost as fast as this radio message. Your sun is already in sight. Our ancestors (祖先) and yours shared the sun ten million years ago. I’m sure you have forgotten your history while we have remembered ours.

Our ancestors lived on the Earth when dinosaurs were dying. Sadly, they could hardly save the beasts. Your planet was very warm then. Our ancestors believed it would make a nice home for them.

They were wrong. Though we were masters of space, we knew so little about the Earth.

For millions of summers — there were no winters in those ancient days — the Earth had rapid (飞速的) development. It took about thirty years to fly from one planet to another, so our ancestors seldom travelled in space. But they never felt lonely. They kept in touch with their relatives and friends on other planets. Three or four times every century, starships would call and bring them space news.

But two million years ago, the Earth began to change. The temperatures fell quickly. The ground was covered with snow and ice. At that time, however, our ancestors knew little about that. Those who had called the Earth their home believed there was just a strange disease spreading on the earth. The disease wouldn’t cause death to them, but it would bring much pain and do harm to men’s health.

1. How soon will the people on the earth see a huge spaceship?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
2. Why did the speaker’s ancestors seldom travel in space?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
3. How did the speaker’s ancestors keep in touch with their relatives and friends?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
4. What happened to the earth two million years ago?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
5. How will you feel after you hear the radio message? Why?

9 .

Why is it called Mars? You might have asked yourself this before. Well, Mars is the name of the Roman god of war. People have seen the planet as a symbol of war for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks called the planet Ares after their god of war. Chinese people called it the“fire star" for the same reason.

Scientists have been interested in the planet since long before any space tasks. Egyptian scientists first saw Mars in the sky more than 4,000 years ago. Since then, people from all over the world have studied the planet.

Over the years, scientists have continued to study the planet and learned some basic things about it.

Mars is 10 times lighter and about 6 times smaller than Earth. Earth is 93 million miles (about 150 million km) from the sun, while Mars is 142 million miles away. That means it is much colder on Mars. In fact, the average temperature on Mars is - 62℃. Scientists found water on Mars long ago, but because of the low temperatures there, it is frozen. One day on Mars is called a sol and is about 40 minutes longer than one Earth day. The Red Planet's surface gravity is only 37% as strong as Earth's, meaning you would be able to jump nearly two times higher on Mars.

1. What did the ancient Greeks call Mars?
A.MarsB.AresC.The“fire star"D.The Red Planet
2. Which of the following is TRUE about Mars?
A.Chinese scientists first saw Mars.B.Mars is lighter and bigger than Earth.
C.Earth is father from the sun than Mars.D.A sol is about 1480 minutes.
3. An astronaut may jump like____on Mars.
A.

Earth               Mars

B.
