1 . I cannot stress too much the importance of watching your opponent (对手), of knowing exactly where he is on the tennis court and what he is doing. It is usually possible to work out the pattern of his game very early in a match. Test him at the front of the court. Try hitting one or two balls up high to see what his shots are like.
Now and again it may be good idea to give your opponent an opportunity of making a mistake. If, early in the match, it seems that he is a very accurate player, but not a forceful one, then you should tempt (引诱) him to play a winning shot. They will try to play an attacking game, but they cannot quite finish it off. The way to break up their steady game may be by putting them into the front of the court.
It is obviously wiser to try to decide at the beginning of the match whether your opponent is weaker on his left-hand or on his right-hand side, and then play a little more than fifty percent of your shots down that side. A number of players experience more trouble than others in the back comers of the court-always be ready to recognize this weakness. Perhaps an opponent has a favourite backhand shot, but lacks certainty with his forehand shot. Tempt him to play the forehand shot.
There are advantages in learning as much as possible about another player even before you play him. When you know, in a competition, who your next opponent will be, try to watch him play beforehand. It is only under match conditions that his weaknesses are likely to show—you are certain to pick up some information, even if it’s a basic thing such as slowness in reaching the front of the court. My team always pool their knowledge of their opponents so that rarely does a member walk onto a court without knowing what to expect.

2 . The annual marathon (马拉松) in my town occurred as scheduled. My job was to follow behind the runners in an ambulance in case any of them needed medical attention. As the athletes began to pace themselves. the front runners started to disappear. It was then that my eyes were drawn to the woman in blue running shorts and a baggy white T-shirt.
I knew we were already watching our “last runner”. Her feet were turned in yet her left knee was turned out. Her legs were so crippled and bent that it seemed impossible for her to walk, not to mention run a marathon.
The driver and I watched in silence as she slowly moved forward. We would move forward a little bit, then stop and wait for her to gain some distance. Then we' d slowly move forward a little bit more. As l watched her struggle to put one foot in front of the other, I found myself breathing for her and urging her forward. I wanted her to stop, and at the same time, I prayed that she wouldn't.
Finally she was the only runner left in sight. I sat on the edge of my seat and watched with respect and amazement as she pushed forward with strong determination through the last miles. When the finish line came into sight, the cheering crowds had long gone home. Yet standing straight and proud waited a man. He was holding one end of a ribbon tied to a post. She slowly crossed through, leaving both ends of the ribbon fluttering (飘动) behind her.
I don't know this woman's name, but that day she became a part of my life-- a part I often depend on. For her, it wasn't about beating the other runners or winning a prize. It was about finishing what she had set out to do. When I think things are too difficult or l get those “I-just-can't-do-it," I think of the last runner. Then I realize how easy the task before me really is.

9 . Shooting down an ice-covered track, a bobsled can go faster than 80 miles an hour.
At the start of a race, the crews push their sled, building up speed before they jump in for the ride. For months before the race, the crew members have built up explosive power in their legs. That means doing a lot of jumps, and sprints. It also means pushing heavy sleds! The push is the crew's only chance to add speed.
The design of the sled's runners (滑板) reduces their friction with the ice.
But remember the sled must not be too fast — the crew still needs to be able to reach the bottom safely.
A.Why do people go for the sport? |
B.Crews polish their runners for a fast ride. |
C.The riders sit inside a hard shell, called cowling. |
D.How do bobsleds go faster than cars on a highway? |
E.A hot runner will melt more ice and may possibly go faster. |
F.Runners that are too flat would spread the friction over a wide area. |
G.All other work goes into keeping other forces from slowing the bobsled down. |
10 . William Purkey, a well-known professor of education, once said, "Dance like no one is watching, love like you'll never be hurt, sing like no one is listening, and live like it's heaven on earth." It seems like the perfect life philosophy (哲理)---and one I've learned to apply to running over the year.
But I didn't always feel this way. In my early days, when I weighed 240 pounds, I ran like everyone was watching---and judging. If I was on a run and saw a car approaching, I'd stop and pretend I was looking for something I'd lost. I bought the high-tech gear and clothes that I thought would make people believe I was a runner. And I didn't know if the expensive shoes I was wearing were the right kind for me---I just wanted to look like I fit in with this group.
To be honest, I felt a certain satisfaction in believing that someone was watching. I really thought that other people cared about my performance. The best example of this was a combined, two-lap marathon(马拉松长跑)in Florence, Italy. As I approached finishing line, the crowd began to cheer. I was surprised. Here I was, thousands of miles from home, and the Italians were shouting for “IIPenguino.”
About 20 yards from the finishing ,the truth set in when the winner of the full marathon went past me as I was finishing the marathon No one was cheering for me. no one probably even noticed that I was finishing. I couldn't help but smile at my own illusion of self-importance.
That's when I realized I had been running for every reason except the right one. I ran to make other people happy, ran to live up to their expectations. But no one was watching---no cared. So I decided I was going to run for me---just me---and gained a new enjoyment from the sport I hadn't truly experienced yet. I've learned to run like no one is watching.
So if you see me at race, and I look like a 60-year-old guy wadding(蹒跚) along, don't worry. I'm fine. The miracle isn't that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.
