1 . New York City is a place full of surprises for many first—time visitors. Americans and foreigners alike experience a kind of culture shock when they first arrive. It is one of the most respected centers of higher education in the United States. Many young people like to live and work in America’s largest city. But if you do not know where to start, it helps to belong to a community.
The city has a place where students have a chance to meet and find their place in the world. It is a private, non—profit center called International House, which serves students from more than 100 countries.
Adjibola Amzat, who is from Nigeria, lives there. “Without the International House, New York would have been a very, very lonely place for many people,” he says. Amzat worked as a news reporter. He left his job to study at Columbia University. He registered for a graduate degree program in journalism. Amzat likes International House. He thinks it has helped to improve his experience at Columbia University.
International House welcomes graduate students from many universities. They have a chance to attend many cultural celebrations throughout the year. The students say their interaction with each other has led to new friendships and personal growth.
Akmyrat Tuyliyev is from Turkmenistan. He says he finds people from so many areas at International House. This, he says, makes him want to work to change the world. “I’d never seen a black person until I came to the United States. So seeing students from Russia, students from China, and all of these other countries, coming here to unite, is really inspiring.”
Many of the 700 people who live at International House say they want to continue the relationships they have begun when they return home.

More than four thousand post offices have closed since 1999 for financial reasons; the rest are losing up to a quarter of a billion pounds a year.
The Saint Levan Valley Post Office near Plymouth faces closure. It is one of thousands that are not commercially practical and cost taxpayers over a hundred and fifty million pounds a year in subsidies. And yet the customers here don’t care if the post office makes money, they say it’s a social lifeline for the community.
“We’ve had people moved to tears here at the very thought of losing their post office. It s such a vital part of the community.” That’s why hundreds of postmasters have arrived in London this morning to remonstrate with what they call a death by a thousand cuts. The government has removed so many services from branches that many would be forced to close.
This afternoon they’ll hand in a petition signed by four million people which they hope would preempt (先发制人) any government announcement on cuts.
And at the top of the list of complaints: the planned withdrawal of the Post Office card account, used by millions to access pensions and benefits. There are many, many people who still want, and who budget on being able to get their money from their pension and other benefits each week in cash at post office, and that is the bottom line.
This industry wants reform and modernization, but not the ill-planned destruction of the network. “They have to be practical. What we wanna do is make sure that they can be practical. So in the same way as a pub used to be tied to one brewery, we want to free up post offices to have lots of products, so they can have a much better income flow, and therefore, stay open.”

10 . The Walt Disney Company wasn’t about to let COVID-19 stop the company from developing. In the past year, some Disney theme park innovation (革新) have been designed.
For example, Disney had always encouraged face-to-face interactions between cast members and customers. It made perfect sense since Disney spends so much time training its workers in providing good customer service. In fact, Disney is known for pleasing its guests, which explains why it scores so high in customer satisfaction surveys. Well, COVID-19 turned personal interactions into problematic exchanges, as they increased the risk of spreading COVID-19. So, quickly, Disney added cast member virtual chat to its app My Disney Experience. Now, you can rely on a cast member’s knowledge whenever you have a question about Disney visit. It's like having a tour guide on your phone!
There is also the Walk-Up Waitlist. Before 2020, Disney had made strict rules for its Table Service restaurants. Once something sold out, would-be diners had no means of booking a table. COVID-19 has affected park guests, though. Some of them booked tables but then decided not to eat there. This cost Disney money, and it prevented you from dining at your favorite places. So, restaurant managers felt unhappy about the poor business practice, and Disney’s IT department reached a solution.
