文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了图书馆资金的几个主要来源。

3 . Public libraries are an excellent resource for research, literacy (读写能力) education, and reading-centered events. Most towns have one or share library services with other towns through a mobile library, and the use of a public library is free to people who are willing to apply for a library card.

There are several primary sources of library funding, starting with national funds which are distributed to states or provinces. These regions send the funds on to public libraries. Local governments also play an important role in providing funding for libraries, and most librarians apply for grants (拨款). Finally, private donations help to maintain libraries — most libraries have an association of Friends of the Library which organizes fund-raising sales and pays annual dues to help maintain the library.

Grants and private donations can also be used to provide a large amount of funding for public libraries, and some large libraries maintain a separate staff member to increase the amount of funding that they can obtain through these sources. Grants include technology grants which allow libraries to install and upgrade computer systems, grants which focus on a particular topic such as science, fiction, children’s books, or local history, and education grants which support locally-based community efforts such as after-school reading programs. Many private donors are pleased to support their local public libraries by donating funds or including some library in their wills, and libraries reward their donors with treats like after-hours visits or privileged access to special collections.

By combining multiple resources, creative librarians can keep their libraries useful, informative, and fun for browsers. When it comes to supporting public libraries, every little bit counts: if you cannot afford to donate to a local library, think about volunteering time to help shelve books, lead after-school programs, or organize fund-raisers. Being active with your public library is a very important way to contribute to your local community.

1. How many main sources of library funding are mentioned?
A.Two.B.Three.C.Four.D.Five.
2. How is the funding made use of according to the text?
A.By exploring more about history.
B.By developing a scientific computer system.
C.By providing help for after-school activities.
D.By enriching special collections for the donors.
3. What does the underlined word “browsers” refer to in the last paragraph?
A.Viewers in the library.
B.Programs used to view documents.
C.People running the library.
D.Donors visiting the library regularly.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.Stressing the value of public libraries.

5 . Every experience makes us grow — nowhere is this more true than at North Country School (NCS). The NCS experience includes both classroom and experiential learning. Their courses help every child unlock their hidden potential and passions.

NCS was eye-opening for Sam Shi. He discovered his passion for biology as he learned about the wildlife and ecosystems (生态系统) within the Adirondacks. “The hands-on, placed-based teaching styles were extremely interesting,” he says. “A whole new type of appreciation occurs when you learn about living things while actually being surrounded by it.”

NCS students grow and learn effectively thanks to the direct experience they get. Led by talented teachers, they aren’t just learning by doing — they’re knowing by doing.

Shi got a taste of this as early as his first day in the Design and Build class with Larry Robjent. “No NCS class works like your standard, textbook classes,” he says. “Larry laid out our year-long project of deconstructing an on-campus bridge and plans to build a new one. A year-long project, where we actually got to work outside, with our hands, and build something practical. No chance you’d find that anywhere else.”

Shi described everything about that class as “special”. He got to be creative. Most importantly, he studied physics and engineering in practical ways. “At the end I got to stand alongside my classmates and admire the product of our efforts, something that would remain a piece of NCS for many years to come,” he shares.

Such breakthroughs happen daily at NCS. “The journey of discovering how to trust my abilities is a life lesson that has remained with me and likely always will,” says Shi. “The teachers always encouraged me to try new things and to trust myself.”

With such courses, it is no wonder NCS students gain confidence, creativity and knowledge. As Shi says, “I had no idea how cool this place would be, and certainly didn’t expect my study there to impact my life as obviously as it did and continues to do.”

1. What are courses like at North Country School according to the passage?
A.They only focus on experiential learning.
B.They can help inspire students’ personal growth.
C.They are mainly for gifted students.
D.They attract many talented teachers.
2. What does the underlined word mean in the fourth paragraph?
A.Repairing.B.Creating.C.Taking apart.D.Blowing up.
3. According to Shi, what is the life lesson he has learned from NCS experience?
A.A passion for biology.
B.A knowledge of building a bridge.
C.A curiosity about new things.
D.A sense of self-confidence.
4. What can we infer from Shi’s words in the last paragraph?
A.He feels gratitude to his school.
B.He wouldn’t have become what he is now without being educated at NCS.
C.What he has learned at NCS will affect him all through his life.
D.The time he spent at NCS is worth remembering.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。介绍的是在2001年成立的一个历史遗址保护组织Adventures in Preservation(AiP)。

10 . What’s the better way to experience the history of a site than to have a hand in actually preserving it? This was the thought behind the founding of Adventures in Preservation (AiP) in 2001.The nonprofit’s founders, Judith Broeker and Jamie Donahoe, were both longtime preservationists and world travelers. They had seen a great many buildings in poor condition, as well as buildings that had been “restored” without the benefit of conservation expertise.

Twelve years on, they are still involved in the daytoday management of the organisation, supported by a volunteer staff. Located around the world, Judith’s favourite projects have long been the ones in Eastern Europe, and she enjoys the opportunity to travel there each year. She, along with anyone else who’s joined the adventure, always quotes their fellow jammers, as they’re called, as the highlight of each project. The groups are made up of people from all different ages, occupations, and cultures. Yet each time, they form a strong bond and work so well together that the work becomes fun.

Raising people’s awareness of their own heritage is another part of AiP project. In many places, there is so much focus on the news that not only are heritage buildings being lost but also are the traditional building skills needed to keep them. By providing training and raising awareness of the importance of their heritage, AiP is helping keep both alive.

Next year, AiP has projects in Europe and the US. There will be even more projects the following year as projects currently under development in Ghana, Armenia, Ukraine and the US come on line. Each project is also an opportunity for travel adventure, and personal growth, and AiP welcomes people from around the world to join a project and “jam” with them.

1. For what major purpose was AiP set up?
A.To gain wonderful benefits.B.To protect old buildings.
C.To hunt for experts.D.To train new members.
2. What does the underlined word “jammers” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Machines.B.Projects.C.Colleagues.D.Organisations.
3. What about AiP does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.Ambitions.B.Education.C.Wealth.D.Efforts.
4. What can be concluded from the list of countries in the last paragraph?
A.AiP’s popularity.B.AiP’s eagerness.C.AiP’s goal.D.AiP’s function.
