1 . The Global Heritage Fund, a nonprofit organization, aims to protect places of cultural importance in developing countries for the reasons that these countries often have few resources to protect such places and that other major cultural organizations often pay more attention to protecting places in developed countries. For example, UNESCO has 45 World Heritage places in Italy, 42 in Spain, but Peru, famous for its ancient Incan buildings, has only 9 World Heritage places. Guatemala has only 3.
The fund recently released a list of cultural treasures in the developing world that are in danger of disappearing. These places are important because they are records of our human civilization. Globalization has created an international culture that is about sameness. But the endangered places are trying to protect the rich differences of human culture throughout history.
One of the fund’s current projects is in Guatemala’s (危地马拉) Mirador Basin, which contains several important examples of ancient Mayan settlements. The buildings are surrounded by forests.
Centuries of tree growth has covered the pyramids and religious buildings, which provides some of the finest examples of the early part of the Mayan civilization (玛雅文明). But this area is in danger from robbers and people cutting trees illegally. Also, over the past ten years, over 70% of the natural environment in the area has been destroyed by fires.
The fund has 3 goals for its Mirador project. One is helping the government obtain UNESCO recognition. Another is establishing permanent protection for the area. And the third is working to make the area a sustainable protected area within 10 years.
To meet these goals, money from the fund will go toward restoring the buildings of El Mirador and mapping and exploring newly discovered buildings. The fund is also paying to train local guides on how to stop theft and illegal tree-cutting. Educational programs are helping to give people in the area the skills they need to have jobs that do not endanger this protected area.
The Global Heritage Fund says we have a duty to the people of the past, present and future to make sure we do not lose these examples of human history. Every country, organization and individual can play a role in helping to protect this rich history.

2 . Peacekeeping has proven to be one of the most effective tools available to the UN to assist host countries to navigate the difficult path from conflict to peace.
Peacekeeping has unique strengths, including legitimacy (合法性), burden sharing, and an ability to deploy (部署) and sustain troops and police from around the globe, integrating them with civilian peacekeepers to advance multidimensional mandates (指令).
UN peacekeepers provide security and the political and peace-building support to help countries make the difficult, early transition from conflict to peace. UN peacekeeping is guided by three basic principles: agreement of the parties, fairness, and non-use of force except in self-defence and defence of the mandate. It is flexible and over the past two decades has been deployed in many frameworks.
Today’s multidimensional peacekeeping operations are called upon not only to maintain peace and security, but also to facilitate the political process, protect civilians, assist in the disarmament of former combatants, support the organisation of elections, protect and promote human rights and assist in restoring the rule of law.
Peacekeeping has always been highly dynamic and has evolved in the face of new challenges. Former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon established a 17-member High-level Independent Panel on UN Peace Operations to make a comprehensive assessment of the state of UN peace operations today, and the emerging needs of the future.
As a unique global partnership, UN Peacekeeping brings together the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Secretariat, troop and police contributors, and the host governments in a combined effort to maintain international peace and security. Its strength lies in the legitimacy of the UN Charter and in the wide range of contributing countries that participate and provide precious resources.
Success is never guaranteed because UN Peacekeeping almost by definition goes to the most physically and politically difficult environments. However, over 60 years of existence, UN Peacekeeping has built up a demonstrable record of success, including winning the Nobel Peace Prize.

5 . The Grameen Bank (GB) project started in 1976 as an action research pilot project in “Jobra” village in Chattogram district of Bangladesh. In 1983, the pilot project was transformed into a bank with the aim of reducing poverty and empowering the poor in Bangladesh through micro credit.
The unique feature of GB is that no collateral(担保抵押)is required to get the credit from the bank. Unlike mainstream commercial banks that bring their clients to their shiny branch buildings where the poor are afraid to be trampled, GB carries its services to the comfort zone of its clients’ doorsteps. It has inspired the women and the weaker section of the communities to join the Grameen community. All banking businesses except loan disbursement(支付)are done in the meetings of the borrowers at the village level centers organized by the center managers. GB’s strong presence in remote areas of the country bears witness to this fact. GB has always made it a priority to empower women and involve them in economic activities. As a result, GB can proudly say that 98% of its borrowers are women. More than two-thirds of these women have moved on to better lives through poverty reduction.
GB is currently present in 81678 (94%) villages in the country and provides services to nearly 45 million people (including family member) through 10.34 million borrower members. Its microcredit program is being carried out as a successful model in reducing poverty in many countries of the world. GB was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 in appreciation of its efforts to create economic and social development from the bottom of the society through microcredit. Now GB is working not just to reduce the poverty of its borrower members, but also to ensure that their future generations are not left behind. It offers education loans, new enterprise loans, and scholarships to borrower members’ children.

6 . The British National Health Service (NHS) was set up in 1948 and was designed to provide equal basic health care, free of charge, for everybody in the countryside. Before this time health care bad to be paid for by individuals.
Nowadays central government is directly responsible for the NHS although it is administered by local health authorities. About 83 percent of the cost of the health service is paid for by general taxation and the rest is met from the National Insurance contributions paid by those in work. There are charges for prescription and dental care but many people, such as children, pregnant women, pensioners, and those on Income Support, are exempt from payment.
Most people are registered with a local doctor (a GP, or General Practitioner) who is increasingly likely to be part of a health centre which serves the community.
As the population of Britain gets older, the hospital service now treats more patients than before, although patients spend less time in hospital. NHS hospitals—many of which were built in the nineteenth century—provide nearly half a million beds and have over 480, 000 medical staff. The NHS is the biggest employer in Europe although Britain actually spends less per person on health care than most of her European neighbours.
During the 1980s there was considerable restructuring of the Health Service with an increased emphasis on managerial efficiency and the privatization of some services (for example, cleaning). At the end of the 1980s the government introduced proposals for further reform of the NHS, including allowing some hospitals to be self-governing, and encouraging GPs to compete for patients. Patients would be able to choose and change their family doctor more easily and GPs would have more financial responsibility. The political questions continue of how much money should be provided to support the NHS and where it should come from.

8 . Benedict Morelli, one of New York’s top-rated lawyers, owns Morelli Law Firm, which has offices, lawyers, cases and experts all over the country. Benedict Morelli and his team of experienced lawyers are expert at handling a wide variety of cases, from auto and truck accidents, to construction injuries, to complex employment discrimination.
One critical reason for their success is that unlike many firms, Morelli Law has the experience, patience, and resources to pursue all difficult cases. Since founding the firm, Mr. Morelli and his team have successfully dealt with an impressive list of outstanding cases in the industry. Impressive firm results include a $95 million settlement in a sexual discrimination case involving Aaron’s Inc., as well as a $62 million settlement for Mark Perez, a construction worker who fell from a roof and suffered a brain injury.
When asked whether they would feel afraid when facing difficult opponents in court, “At my core, I’m a trial lawyer,” said Benedict Morelli. “Because of our experience and accomplishments in the courtroom, our opponents know that we’re prepared to pursue the best result possible. Going to trial does not intimidate us.”
The firm is devoted to realizing its clients’ goals both inside and outside of the courtroom. For example, in a drunk driving case, the firm worked with the client to strengthen New York laws that punish drunk drivers. This effort has made it easier for lawyers in New York to charge drunk drivers. Moreover, Mr. Moreli and his team are also committed to helping those who have been wronged achieve the justice they deserve, no matter the difficulty of the circumstances.
