文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了全球遗产基金(The Global Heritage Fund)这个组织,全球遗产基金是一个非营利组织,旨在保护发展中国家的重要文化场所和它的三个目标。

1 . The Global Heritage Fund, a nonprofit organization, aims to protect places of cultural importance in developing countries for the reasons that these countries often have few resources to protect such places and that other major cultural organizations often pay more attention to protecting places in developed countries. For example, UNESCO has 45 World Heritage places in Italy, 42 in Spain, but Peru, famous for its ancient Incan buildings, has only 9 World Heritage places. Guatemala has only 3.

The fund recently released a list of cultural treasures in the developing world that are in danger of disappearing. These places are important because they are records of our human civilization. Globalization has created an international culture that is about sameness. But the endangered places are trying to protect the rich differences of human culture throughout history.

One of the fund’s current projects is in Guatemala’s (危地马拉) Mirador Basin, which contains several important examples of ancient Mayan settlements. The buildings are surrounded by forests.

Centuries of tree growth has covered the pyramids and religious buildings, which provides some of the finest examples of the early part of the Mayan civilization (玛雅文明). But this area is in danger from robbers and people cutting trees illegally. Also, over the past ten years, over 70% of the natural environment in the area has been destroyed by fires.

The fund has 3 goals for its Mirador project. One is helping the government obtain UNESCO recognition. Another is establishing permanent protection for the area. And the third is working to make the area a sustainable protected area within 10 years.

To meet these goals, money from the fund will go toward restoring the buildings of El Mirador and mapping and exploring newly discovered buildings. The fund is also paying to train local guides on how to stop theft and illegal tree-cutting. Educational programs are helping to give people in the area the skills they need to have jobs that do not endanger this protected area.

The Global Heritage Fund says we have a duty to the people of the past, present and future to make sure we do not lose these examples of human history. Every country, organization and individual can play a role in helping to protect this rich history.

1. Why does the Global Heritage Fund focus on protecting cultural places in developing countries?
A.They are fascinating and dangerous.B.They are more important to mankind.
C.They are attractive to tourists.D.They are poor and often ignored.
2. Why is protecting the endangered places important in the time of globalization?
A.Because the rich differences of human culture should be preserved.
B.Because the developing world needs them to make money.
C.Because they can help speed up the process of globalization.
D.Because we should create an international culture about sameness.
3. What does the Mirador project mainly want to achieve?
A.Financial cooperation.B.National recognition.
C.Sustainable protection.D.Employment promotion.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.World Heritage in DangerB.Every Project Matters
C.The Global Heritage FundD.Every Individual Matters

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文,介绍了什么是联合国维持和平及其具体内容。

2 . Peacekeeping has proven to be one of the most effective tools available to the UN to assist host countries to navigate the difficult path from conflict to peace.

Peacekeeping has unique strengths, including legitimacy (合法性), burden sharing, and an ability to deploy (部署) and sustain troops and police from around the globe, integrating them with civilian peacekeepers to advance multidimensional mandates (指令).

UN peacekeepers provide security and the political and peace-building support to help countries make the difficult, early transition from conflict to peace. UN peacekeeping is guided by three basic principles: agreement of the parties, fairness, and non-use of force except in self-defence and defence of the mandate. It is flexible and over the past two decades has been deployed in many frameworks.

Today’s multidimensional peacekeeping operations are called upon not only to maintain peace and security, but also to facilitate the political process, protect civilians, assist in the disarmament of former combatants, support the organisation of elections, protect and promote human rights and assist in restoring the rule of law.

Peacekeeping has always been highly dynamic and has evolved in the face of new challenges. Former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon established a 17-member High-level Independent Panel on UN Peace Operations to make a comprehensive assessment of the state of UN peace operations today, and the emerging needs of the future.

As a unique global partnership, UN Peacekeeping brings together the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Secretariat, troop and police contributors, and the host governments in a combined effort to maintain international peace and security. Its strength lies in the legitimacy of the UN Charter and in the wide range of contributing countries that participate and provide precious resources.

Success is never guaranteed because UN Peacekeeping almost by definition goes to the most physically and politically difficult environments. However, over 60 years of existence, UN Peacekeeping has built up a demonstrable record of success, including winning the Nobel Peace Prize.

1. What is true about UN peacekeepers using force?
A.They are not allowed to use force.
B.They may use force when their security is threatened.
C.They can use force to help the weaker of the warring sides.
D.They should use force when host countries have difficulties maintaining peace.
2. Which of the following is the duty of UN peacekeeping?
A.Monitoring former combatants.B.Maintaining the political process.
C.Helping restore the rule of law.D.Sending and managing troops for host countries.
3. What is the purpose of the underlined part in the last paragraph?
A.To indicate that UN Peacekeeping has a long way to go.
B.To make people aware of the importance of UN Peacekeeping.
C.To explain that UN Peacekeeping efforts are not always effective.
D.To stress the tough working conditions of UN Peacekeeping missions.
4. What is the best title for this passage?
A.UN Peacekeeping: Its History and Operations
B.UN Peacekeeping: What It Is and How It Works
C.UN Peacekeeping: How It Has Achieved World Peace
D.UN Peacekeeping: Its New Challenges and Future Path

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了孟加拉国吉大港市的格莱珉银行项目。

5 . The Grameen Bank (GB) project started in 1976 as an action research pilot project in “Jobra” village in Chattogram district of Bangladesh. In 1983, the pilot project was transformed into a bank with the aim of reducing poverty and empowering the poor in Bangladesh through micro credit.

The unique feature of GB is that no collateral(担保抵押)is required to get the credit from the bank. Unlike mainstream commercial banks that bring their clients to their shiny branch buildings where the poor are afraid to be trampled, GB carries its services to the comfort zone of its clients’ doorsteps. It has inspired the women and the weaker section of the communities to join the Grameen community. All banking businesses except loan disbursement(支付)are done in the meetings of the borrowers at the village level centers organized by the center managers. GB’s strong presence in remote areas of the country bears witness to this fact. GB has always made it a priority to empower women and involve them in economic activities. As a result, GB can proudly say that 98% of its borrowers are women. More than two-thirds of these women have moved on to better lives through poverty reduction.

GB is currently present in 81678 (94%) villages in the country and provides services to nearly 45 million people (including family member) through 10.34 million borrower members. Its microcredit program is being carried out as a successful model in reducing poverty in many countries of the world. GB was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 in appreciation of its efforts to create economic and social development from the bottom of the society through microcredit. Now GB is working not just to reduce the poverty of its borrower members, but also to ensure that their future generations are not left behind. It offers education loans, new enterprise loans, and scholarships to borrower members’ children.

Grameen Bank has been actively contributing to the development of Bangladesh.

1. What does Grameen Bank do to the borrowers according to the passage?
A.Do banking businesses at their village.B.Take them to the grand bank building.
C.Help them step out of the comfort zone.D.Send the loan money to their home.
2. What does the underlined word “trampled” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Well received.B.Left behind.C.Watched over.D.Looked down on.
3. What made Grameen Bank win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006?
A.Influencing almost every village in Bangladesh.B.Helping the poor through microcredit.
C.Reducing poverty all over the world.D.Caring about the future generations of the poor.
4. What feature does the GB loan have?
A.Women-first.B.Interest-free.C.Subject to education.D.Guarantee-bound.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍一个组织——英国国家卫生服务体系(NHS)及它的职能。

6 . The British National Health Service (NHS) was set up in 1948 and was designed to provide equal basic health care, free of charge, for everybody in the countryside. Before this time health care bad to be paid for by individuals.

Nowadays central government is directly responsible for the NHS although it is administered by local health authorities. About 83 percent of the cost of the health service is paid for by general taxation and the rest is met from the National Insurance contributions paid by those in work. There are charges for prescription and dental care but many people, such as children, pregnant women, pensioners, and those on Income Support, are exempt from payment.

Most people are registered with a local doctor (a GP, or General Practitioner) who is increasingly likely to be part of a health centre which serves the community.

As the population of Britain gets older, the hospital service now treats more patients than before, although patients spend less time in hospital. NHS hospitals—many of which were built in the nineteenth century—provide nearly half a million beds and have over 480, 000 medical staff. The NHS is the biggest employer in Europe although Britain actually spends less per person on health care than most of her European neighbours.

During the 1980s there was considerable restructuring of the Health Service with an increased emphasis on managerial efficiency and the privatization of some services (for example, cleaning). At the end of the 1980s the government introduced proposals for further reform of the NHS, including allowing some hospitals to be self-governing, and encouraging GPs to compete for patients. Patients would be able to choose and change their family doctor more easily and GPs would have more financial responsibility. The political questions continue of how much money should be provided to support the NHS and where it should come from.

1. We can know from the first paragraph that ________.
A.patients were charged for receiving health care before 1948
B.the NHS was an organization which gave free advice to villagers
C.people didn’t have to pay for health care since the NHS was set up
D.the original aim of the NHS was to provide equal basic health care for everybody
2. What do we know about the NHS?
A.It’s managed by the central government.
B.It hires more people than any other unit in Europe.
C.Its cost is mainly paid for by the National Insurance contributions.
D.Fewer patients go to its hospitals than before because they spend less on health care.
3. What does the underlined word “exempt”(Para. 2) probably mean?
A.sufferingB.differentC.preventedD.free
4. The biggest problem for the NHS is __________.
A.many hospitals are too old to be used
B.some services are in the charge of individuals
C.there is not enough money for further reform
D.more and more patients go to GPs for treatment
