文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了英国的树木数量较少,但以前的尝试效果不太好,对此作者提出了四点建议。

1 . It’s official. Britain is to be reforested. A Tree Action Plan will deliver half a billion more trees by 2050.

Britain is one of the most treeless countries in Europe, trees covering about 10 percent of its land — around a quarter of the European average. The bare state of the British landscape is nothing new. It is a false idea that a squirrel could ever have crossed the country by jumping from tree to tree.

Certainly, at around three billion of trees, we have twice as many as a century ago. However, about a third of them is in monoculture (单一种植) plantations of fast-growing non-native species like Sitka spruce, grown to make paper. These plantations lack biodiversity — more tree farms than forests.

But it would be great to have more trees: for the climate, for biodiversity and for ourselves.

Can we do it? Past efforts to regreen Britain have not gone too well. In the 1990s, the government had a plan for a national forest in the Midlands. It promised 30 million trees. Thirty years on, they have managed nine million. Older readers may remember the project “Plant a Tree” in 1973. I remember planting one in Cambridge. But the trees were taken little care of and nobody tracked them. Mine died, as no doubt did many others.

The trick is not to repeat past mistakes by growing single-species forests. We need ecological (生态的) diversity. Another rule should be to plant where there were trees before. But if the rules for planting begin to sound a bit troublesome, maybe there is a better way. Not to plant at all. Often it is better just to create room for trees to regenerate naturally, self-seeding from nearby woodlands. Consider what the author of the best-selling book Wilding did on herd farm. She went away from the fields and stood back, letting the trees self-seed from nearby woodlands with the help of birds that brought in seeds. Two decades on, she had a woodland. My final suggestion is that instead of throwing all our money into headline-friendly but short-sighted planting projects in the countryside, let’s have more trees where most of us live, too.

1. What do we learn about Britain?
A.It was well-wooded in Europe.B.It has a relatively low number of trees.
C.It has taken on a new look with more trees.D.It was a country of various kinds of animals.
2. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.The trees died from lack of care.B.There was a big need to regreen Britain.
C.The government’s promise was not kept.D.The previous attempts didn’t work well.
3. How many suggestions does the author give?
A.2.B.3.C.4.D.5.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要说明了一家英国公司开发了一种机器人手,据称可以根据用户的要求进行更新以执行新的动作。介绍了这种设备的一些使用情况和人们对此设备的看法。

4 . A British company has developed a robotic hand that it says can be updated to perform new actions requested by the user.

The device is designed to work like a human hand. It uses electrical signals from muscles in the upper arm. Sensors are placed against the skin of the upper arm to detect muscle movements. A control system then translates these movements into commands for the robotic hand, typically to open or close the hand.

The British company, COVVI, developed the robotic hand called Nexus. It says the device can be updated through a computer application program or app, remotely (远程地) from anywhere in the world. These updates can provide improvements, new features, and problem fixes directly to the Nexus without the need to visit a specific office or to send the hand back to COVVI.

It is a really powerful thing and a first to market. Nexus uses the wireless technology Bluetooth to permit the company’s experts to update the robotic hand for users. Some other companies have created products that can also be app-controlled, but COVVI’s robotic hand is different because the updates can be sent to an individual device.

One Nexus user is Australian swimmer Jessica Smith, who was born without a left hand. Smith was fitted with the device in April at the age of 37. She said the device was already creating new movements for her although the update process took a few hours. “I’m adding and expanding on who I am by being able to access technology that’s never been available before,” she said.

1. What is the sensors’ function?
A.To move the upper arm.B.To comfort the upper arm.
C.To send messages to the muscle.D.To catch electrical activity in the muscle.
2. What does a user need to do to update Nexus?
A.Call COVVI.B.Access an app.
C.Control a remote.D.Go to an appointed office.
3. What makes Nexus different from other robotic hands?
A.Product safety.B.Update sequence.C.Personal service.D.Market influence.
4. How does Smith like the device?
A.It is time saving.B.It is life changing.
C.It is quite common.D.It is far from satisfying.

Camp Bonifas is in South Korea right on the border to North Korea. When they built the course they realized that they wouldn’t be able to fit 18 holes in the camp, so they decided to build a 1-hole golf course surrounded by LIVE minefields (布雷区) on three sides.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了运动员Jim Thorpe的个人经历以及成就。

8 . Jim Thorpe is one of the greatest athletes of all time. He had amazing athletic abilities and was well-known during his lifetime, yet that did not make Thorpe a stranger to adversity.

Thorpe was an American Indian from Oklahoma who developed his extraordinary athletic skills in his youth through hard labor. It was also in his youth that he learned to endure hardship brought upon by racial prejudice. Many would say his childhood was not easy. He grew up poor and at age 9 his twin brother passed away and a few years later he lost both of his parents.

But that did not stop him from doing what he loved and pursuing his dreams. Nothing seemed to stop him, not even stolen shoes. Just hours before Thorpe was going to compete in the 1912 Olympics, somebody stole his shoes. Thorpe improvised (临时拼凑) by getting shoes out of the garbage. The shoes were two different sizes. He wore an extra pair of socks on one foot to even them out.

He still went on to win two gold medals—winning each event he competed in except for one, the javelin (标枪). The javelin was the only event he didn’t win, probably because he had never competed in that event before. It is interesting to note that Thorpe had tried to throw the javelin once before in the Olympic trials. At the time, he didn’t know that he could throw it with a running start. He threw it standing still and was placed second.

At the Olympics,he also took part in the decathlon (十项全能运动). He finished first in two events, third in four events, and fourth in two more. Thorpe ended up finishing third in the world. He was undoubtedly a dominating force that couldn’t be stopped and just kept on going.

I think Paul Dughi said it best, “It’s hard to imagine now that pro athletes get paid millions of dollars just to wear a particular brand of shoes. For Jim Thorpe, it didn’t matter what kind he wore.”

1. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.The adversity Thorpe met with led to his success.
B.Thorpe’s success was no guarantee of a better life.
C.Thorpe’s career brought him both gains and losses.
D.Thorpe suffered many hardships despite his success.
2. Why did Thorpe wear more socks on one foot?
A.To prevent the foot from injury.B.To make the shoe fit the foot.
C.To stop the shoe from being stolen.D.To show his problem-solving skills.
3. What most likely led to Thorpe’s failure to win the javelin?
A.Loss of his own sports shoes.B.A casual attitude towards the event.
C.Lack of experience in the event.D.A shortage of talent for the event.
4. Which of the following words can best describe Jim Thorpe?
A.Loyal and enthusiastic.B.Genuine and creative.
C.Tough and strong-minded.D.Selfless and good-tempered.
