1 . Thirteen-year-old Kaylee has a lot of friends — 532, actually, if you count up her online friends. And she spends a lot of time with them.
But is it possible that Kaylee’s online friendships could be making her lonely? That’s what some experts believe. Connecting online is a great way to stay in touch, they say. However, some experts worry that many kids are so busy connecting online that they might be missing out on true friendships.
Could this be true? During your parents’ childhoods, connecting with friends usually meant spending time with them in the flesh. Kids played Scrabble around a table, not Words with Friends on their phones. When friends missed each other, they picked up the telephone. Friends might even write letters to each other.
Today, most communication takes place online. A typical teen sends 2,000 texts a month and spends more than 44 hours per week in front of a screen. Much of this time is spent on social media platforms (平台).
In fact, in many ways, online communication can make friendships stronger. “There’s definitely a positive influence. Kids can stay in constant contact, which means they can share more of their feelings with each other,” says Katie Davis, co-author of The App Generation.
Other experts, however, warn that too much online communication can get in the way of forming deep friendships. “If we are constantly checking in with our virtual (虚拟的) worlds, we will have little time for our real-world friendships,” says Larry Rosen, a professor at California State University. Rosen also worries that today’s kids might mistake the “friends” on the social media for true friends in life. However, in tough times, you don’t need someone to like your picture or share your blogs. You need someone who will keep your secrets and hold your hand. You would like to talk face to face.

7 . Louis Bleriot was a French aviator (飞行员), inventor and engineer and had become very interested in flying aircraft while he was at school. He first decided to experiment with aircraft design, after seeing a flight show at the World Fair in Paris. For about eight years he experimented with several designs and escaped from two serious air crashes with relatively minor injuries.
In 1908, a British newspaper announced that it was offering £500 in prize money for the first person to make a flight across the English Channel, before the end of that year. When 1908 passed with no serious attempt to make the flight across the Channel, the prize money was doubled to £1,000 and the offer lengthened to the end of 1909.
On 25 July 1909, Bleriot decided to make his attempt. The distance of the flight was about 45 kilometres, his speed was around 70 kilometres an hour and he flew at a height of 45 to 90 metres. He did not take a compass for direction, but followed the ship Escopette, which guided him towards Dover (in England). During the flight visibility worsened and Bleriot later said, “For more than ten minutes I was alone and lost and couldn’t see anything.” Fortunately, the clouds lifted and he was able to land his aircraft near Dover Castle, on the cliffs (悬崖).The actual contact with land was very hard. In fact, not only was the aircraft’s propeller (螺旋桨) broken, but part of the framework which carried the engine was also damaged. However, these damages were small compared to the success of the flight. Bleriot had crossed the Channel, had won the £1,000 prize and had survived uninjured.
After his success, Bleriot began his own aviation (航空/飞机制造业) company and produced 900 aircraft in the next five years. In 1927, when Charles Lindbergh became the first person to fly across the Atlantic Ocean from the USA to France, Louis Bleriot was there to meet him at the airfield. They were surely two of the bravest men that ever flew an aircraft and they pioneered an industry.

8 . You may be familiar with the following famous people, but have you heard of their graduation speeches, in which they either share their unforgotten experiences or give you some great inspiration(灵感).
Michael Dell, University of Texas at Austin
And now you’ve accomplished something great and important here, and it’s time for you to move on to what’s next. And you must not let anything prevent you from taking those first steps... You must also commit to the adventure. Just have faith in the skills and the knowledge you’ve been blessed(赐予) with and go.
J. K. Rowling, Harvard University
Half my lifetime ago, I was striking an uneasy balance between my ambition and the expectation from my parents who were not rich...But what I feared most of myself at your age was not poverty, but failure. The fact that you are graduating from Harvard suggests that you know little about failure, you might be driven by a fear of failure quite as much as a desire for success.
Steve Jobs, Stanford University
Sometimes life’s going to hit you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith...Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work, and the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking and don’t settle.
Bill Gates, Harvard University

9 . A new study has found that all dogs have different personalities—even dogs of the same breed(品种).
Elinor Karlsson studies genetics at the University of Massachusetts. She co-wrote a report about the study, which appeared recently in the publication Science.
Karlsson said, “Every dog really is an individual,” noting that there is “a huge amount of difference” even between dogs that look the same.
At a New York dog park, dog owners talked about the different characteristics of their pets. Elizabeth Kelly owns an English springer spaniel. She called her dog friendly, but also “kind of the queen bee.” In other words, her dog likes to act like it is in charge of other dogs. Suly described her yellow Labrador as “calm, lazy and shy.”
The idea of dog breeds is quite recent. Around 160 years ago, humans began to breed dogs to have certain physical qualities, such as fur, color and ear shape.
Karlsson said her aim was to learn how much a dog’s breed affects their behavior. The answer? Breed does not decide an individual dog’s personality.
Karlsson’s team gathered information from 18,000 dog owners and studied the genetic code of over 2,000 dogs. The researchers found that some qualities are based on genetics. However, it is not sure that two dogs of the same breed will behave in the same way.
For example, huskies and beagles, may be more likely to howl—or make a long, loud barking sound. But many of these dogs do not howl, as owner observations showed.
