2 . Tiny as they are, bats have the ability to "see" in the dark by using a special skill called echolocation(回声定位法). They make noises and wait for sound waves, or an echo, to bounce back off objects. They can tell the distance of various objects by how quickly, the sound waves bounce back off them. If no sound bounces back, they can then fly forward.

This special ability has been copied in the human world for a long time, such as in submarines and planes. But apart from helping vehicles “see” where they are, what if blind people could use echolocation for themselves? American Daniel Kish. who is blind, 1s known as "batman. " This isn't because he walks around in a cape(披风) and a mask, but because he has a bat-like ability to locate where he is through sharp clicks he makes by moving his tongue against the roof of his mouth. Kish is so skilled at echolocating that he can ride a bike and hike on his own.

Recently, a research carried out at the University of Durham in England shed some light on the power of human echolocation. Kish, as well as other volunteers, worked with a group of scientists who studied the way blind people listen to the echoes that they produce from clicks. The team found that people were capable of hearing even very faint echoes, ones far fainter than had been previously thought.

Lore Thaler, lead scientist of the group, said, "We found that in some conditions, they were really faint-about 95 percent softer than the actual clicks, but the echolocators were still able to sense this."

Andrew Kolarik, another expert in echolocation, told BBC News that echolocation “can be very useful at providing information at face or chest height” and could help people “avoid objects like low hanging branches that might not get detected by the cane or a guide dog".

According to BBC News, echolocation is a skill blind people can acquire and develop, just like learning a language. As Kolarik said, "Teaching echolocation skills could provide blind people with the means of exploring new places. "

4 . When Rachel Ratelle saw a news video of a burned koala trying to climb a tree to safety in fire-ravaged (火灾肆虐的) Australia, she decided to do something about it.

She looked up wildlife rescue and relief agencies in Australia to find out what they needed most. Besides donations, many organizations asked for hand-sewn (手缝的) and knitted pouches (袋子) and wraps for koalas and other animals that were burned or had lost their homes and parents in the fires.

This idea attracted Ratelle, but there was just one problem.

“I’d never sewn in my life,” said Ratelle, 17, a senior at Rancho Buena Vista High School in Vista, US. “Giving money seemed like something too simple. But I wanted to directly help these animals by doing something myself, so I decided to learn how to sew.”

Over the next few months, Ratelle bought her own sewing machine and taught herself how to sew via videos online. Then she purchased 18 yards of fabric and sewed 25 pouches of different sizes and shipped them off to For Australian Wildlife Needing Aid (FAWNA), one of several relief organizations that have rushed to rescue koalas, kangaroos and other species suffering from burns.

A week later, she received a photo from FAWNA with a young joey (幼兽) in one of her larger pouches. “It made me feel like I contributed to the world and it showed how a simple act of kindness can go a long way,” said Ratelle, who hopes to study biology for a future career as a nurse practitioner.

“I plan to use my new sewing skills to help animals and people devastated (蹂躏) by natural disasters,” she said.

According to the World Wildlife Fund, it estimated that 1.2 billion animals have died, as a result of the bushfires, which have burned more than 26 million acres in Australia.

Several craft guild (手工业行会) websites around the world   have mobilized (动员) for Australian relief by making the animal pouches. Karen Newberry and her two daughters Madison, 12 and Rochelle, 8, from San Diego also offered their help in such a way. For Newberry, “it was a big push that made we crafters, sewers to realize there’s something more we can do than just make things for ourselves,” she said.

5 . Most people hold the belief that young people from poor families whose socio-economic backgrounds are not in bad conditions tend to do less well in the education system. In an attempt to help the children of poor families, a nationwide program called “Headstart” was started in the US in 1965. A lot of money was poured into it. It took children into pre-school institutions at the age of three and it was expected to help them succeed in education. However, the results have been disappointing, because the program began too late. Many children who entered it at three were already behind their peers in language and intelligence and the parents were not willing to get involved in the process.

To improve the results, another program was started in Missouri that concentrated on parents as the child’s first teachers. This program was based on researches showing that working with the family is the most effective way of helping children get the best possible start in life. The four-year study included 380 families who were about to have their first child and represented different social-economic status, age and family structure. The program invited many trained educators visiting and working with the parent or parents and the child. The program also gave the parents some guidance to communicate with their children, and useful skills on child development.

At the age of three, the children involved in the “Missouri” program were evaluated with the children selected from the same socio-economic background and family situations. The results were obvious. The children in the program were more advanced in language development, problem solving and other intellectual skills than their peers. They performed equally well regardless of socio-economic backgrounds or family structures. What they found through the program was that one of the most important factors that affected the child’s development was the poor quality of parent-child interaction. That interaction was not necessarily bad in poorer families.

The “Missouri” program is quite different from “Headstart” program. From what they did we can draw a conclusion: Without a similar focus on parent education and on the vital importance of the first three years, some evidence indicates that it will not be enough to overcome educational unfairness.

1. What can we learn about the “Headstart” program?
A.It helped many children from poor families to make progress.
B.It failed because the children they helped had already fallen behind.
C.It helped the children involved succeed in their education soon.
D.It succeeded in improving the intelligence of all the children.
2. We can learn from the second paragraph that the “Missouri” program ______.
A.focused on the children’s first school teachers.
B.helped the children return to the same home.
C.made the children improved in many aspects.
D.gave the parents advice on their development.
3. What does the underlined word “interaction” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Intelligence.B.Performance.
C.Education.D.Communication.
4. The last paragraph tells us that ______.
A.parents play an important role in children’s education.
B.it is impossible to overcome educational unfairness.
C.poor families cannot change the fate of their children.
D.The “Missouri” program pay more attention to the ages.

7 . Last month, my husband and I completed what some of our friends considered a foolish task: a 32-day, 5, 232-mile camping trip with children in our Volkswagen van, without ''high-tech'' to occupy the children.

It was the screen less journey that showered me with doubts. But is ''boredom'' senseless? My friend Renee, who has driven cross-country with her three kids eight times, calls boredom the mother of creativity. She's not the only one who sees virtue in blank time. In a recently published paper, researchers at East Anglia University in England concluded that the trance like (发呆的) state helps recharge the mind and is ''central to learning and creativity''. I wasn't trying to make my kids smarter. Neither do I dislike high-tech. But I understand too well the power of mini screens to transform our kids into zombies (木讷的人) .

On Day 1, our 7-year-old son announced ''Texas is so boring!''. The next day, struggling against his seat belt, he yelled he couldn't take much more of this. His 5-year-old sister was better at the long hours playing make-believe with the stuffed animals. On Day 3, he began count mountains and see pandas and dolphins in distant clouds in the Texas sky. I often joined the kids in the back, where we did thumb-and-toe wrestle. With well-known mountains ahead, my husband told the children the past legends of them. ''Arizona is not as boring as Texas,'' our son declared.

I hope the trip gave kids some lazy, unstructured time to learn something about valuing the trip instead of looking for the fastest way to burn it up. I don't always make the right call as a parent but I know that in banning the small screen we made the right choice this time.

1. Why did the author choose a high-tech free journey?
A.Her friends are highly against it.
B.She disliked advanced technology.
C.She feared the passive influence of mini-screens.
D.The researchers proved the harm of modern technology.
2. What happened during the cross-country drive?
A.Their son got worse at boredom.
B.Her kids had a tough time riding in the vehicle.
C.Their son relieved himself by watching animals outside.
D.The time spent without screens strengthened the family bond.
3. The underlined part ''the fastest way'' in the last paragraph refers to      .
A.the speediest route to finish the journey
B.the ability to observe the surroundings
C.the interest of playing games with others
D.the choice of killing time by playing digital devices
4. Which is the best title for the text?
A.Is Driving Long Distances Good for Children?
B.A Touching Cross-country Trip of My Family
C.What's Wrong with Boredom without High-tech?
D.Creative Kids out of Parents' Reasonable Choice

8 . Let’ do some sleep math. You lost two hours of sleep every night last week because of a big project due on Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, you slept in, getting four extra hours. On Monday morning, you were feeling so bright-eyed, and you only had one cup of coffee, instead of your usual two. But dons’ be cheated by your energy: You’re still carrying around a heavy load of sleepiness, or what experts call “sleep debt” - in this case something like six hours, almost a full night’s sleep.

Sleep debt is the difference between the amount of sleep you should be getting and the amount you actually get. It’s a deficit(缺乏)that grows every time we skim some extra minutes off our nightly sleep. “People accumulate(积累)sleep debt gradually without being noticed,” says William C. Decent, founder of the Stanford University Sleep Research Center. Studies show that such short-term lack of sleep leads to a foggy brain, worsened vision, and trouble remembering. Long-term effects include obesity(肥胖)and heart disease.A survey by the National Sleep Foundation reports that we’re losing one hour of sleep each night---more than two full weeks of sleep every year.

The good news is that, like all debts, with some work, sleep debt can be repaid. Adding an extra hour or two of sleep a night is the way to catch up on sleep debt. For the long-term lack of sleep, take it easy for a few months to get back into a natural sleep pattern. Go to bed when you are tired, and allow your body to wake you in the morning (no alarm clock allowed). You may find yourself catatonic(有紧张感的)in the beginning of the recovery cycle: expect to have ten hours shut-eye per night. As the days pass, however, the amount of sleeping time will gradually decrease.

So earn back that lost sleep---and follow the orders of your inner sleep needs, and you’ll feel better. “When you put away sleep debt, you become a superman,” says Stanford’s Dement, talking about the improved mental and physical abilities that come with being well rested.

1. The example of sleep math is used to show___________
A.in what case you build up a sleep debt
B.why you need six hours sleep every night
C.why you are full of energy even when you don’t have enough sleep
D.in what case you should drink coffee to keep energetic
2. The author begins Paragraph 2 with___________
A.an exampleB.a definition(定义)
C.an argumentD.a discussion
3. By saying the underlined sentence in the last paragraph. Dement means__________
A.you can get enough sleep with the superman’s help
B.you can achieve your goals with a sleep debt
C.you will be clever if you accumulate sleep debt
D.You will be in a good state with enough sleep
4. What might be the most suitable title for the passage?
A.How can you keep energetic?B.Can you have a good sleep?
C.What is sleep debt?D.Can you catch up on lost sleep?
