Yu Rong, a Chinese artist, thinks of a new way to introduce     1     ancient story of Hua Mulan in her picture book. In the book, I Am Hua Mulan, she tells the story by     2     (combine) Chinese paper-cutting with international artistic styles. She places Shaanxi papercuts over western-style pencil sketches (素描)    3     (create) typical presentation of Chineseelements (要素), which turns out to be a     4     (success) and impressive breakthrough.

Hua Mulan,     5     story has been told by generations in China, was a fighter from the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534). As a devoted daughter, she dressed herself as a man to serve in the army     6     place of her father. Mulan’s character, such as courage, kindness and a disinterested attitude towards fame and fortune, made     7     (she) one of the most respected historical Chinese heroines. Mulan’s story has been adapted     8     (frequent) in modern media. For example, in 1998, Disney produced a film named Mulan, which     9     (consider) a great success by critics and the public right after its release.

To better tell the story, Yu Rong takes inspiration from her several     10     (visit) to sites of ancient battles and Henan Province’s Yu Opera. After years of preparation she finally makes this extraordinary work.

6 . A one-hour class can save a life. That’s what 16-year-old McDonald’s part-time worker Raley learned when she _______ saved a choking customer by using the Heimlich maneuver (海姆立克急救法).

Working at the Eden Prairie McDonald’s, the young girl _______ on a Saturday morning, expecting for everything to _______ as normal. After handing one woman part of her _______, Raley left the pick-up window. It was when she _______ to explain the rest was on its way that she saw the customer _______ to be choking.

Bread was _______ in her throat. Her daughter was by her side and the little girl looked so _______ at what happened. Raley straight away _______ her colleague to call 911, and then rushed out of the window to help the choking customer. Having ________ a first aid class before, Raley used the Heimlich maneuver with the help of another customer.

The situation turned around, and the woman, though in fear, was deeply ________ of Raley’s help. First responders arrived later only to find the woman was ________. Without a second thought, they handed Raley a medal as a(n) ________ for doing good work in the community.

Raley’s parents also arrived at the ________. Seeing an ambulance and police cars, they immediately became worried that something might have happened to their daughter, who had ________ from some social difficulties ________ autism (自闭症).

“We are ________ of Raley and her quick ________ over the weekend to help our customer,” said the operator Paul Ostergaard. “Raley truly shows what it is to be a ________, and we are honored to have her as a highly-valued member at our ________.”

8 . Neudy Rojop, 29, looks across the rough, rocky road in the small rural village of San Rafael Pacaya. It leads to the home where she grew up and where she still lives today.

When Rojop was about 10, her cousin, Carlos, was very sick. Without any local clinics (诊所), Rojop’s family couldn’t even figure out what the disease was. They could do nothing but wait. Growing up, she noticed how frequently many of those around her were getting sick. As a teenager, she started to realize her community needed better chance to health care. So she determined to go to a nursing school.

But her vision was beyond being a nurse. After graduation, she realized one person was not enough to make the community better. “The people here may have common diseases,” she thought. “Some are known. But there may be new diseases that we don’t know about.” She wanted to do something to keep any illness from being a threat in the first place. She wanted to train people and do some research to monitor these illnesses and try to provide early actions, or try out new ways to prevent some of them.

Over the next few years, she and a small team brought her vision to life. They provided measures that could limit the possible risks. Olson, one of her colleagues, recalled, “She has zero clinical experience and zero research experience at first, but now she is a superstar here. Her working place is usually busy with about 300 patients per month.”

Now Rojop starts her days with a morning meeting, making decisions, solving problems and setting priorities with her teammates. “In the past, I was so young that I could do nothing for my community,” she says. “But now I can help because I know how.”
