7 . When natural disasters happen, animals are very often left alone to defend themselves against the violence of nature. However, today, a man has changed this by using drones(无人机)to locate them.
Douglas Thron, a person from California, has been helping wildlife around the world in zones where a natural disaster has just happened, whether it is caused by a fire, a tornado, a hurricane or even a tsunami. With the help of his drone, he can locate animals still alive that could be trapped somewhere they cannot get out. Once he finds one or more, wildlife rescuers move in to free them or bring them back to safety to be treated, if they are wounded.
Thron has been involved in various actions to help the environment since the 1990s. He took a special interest in saving the ancient redwood forests of California but his job then was to shoot videos with his camera. In 2019, a Category Five hurricane hit the Bahamas. Thron decided to volunteer with a group called Sea Shepherd with the mission of documenting the damage. He brought drones with him. However, as he was flying them, he noticed a great number of trapped dogs. That is when he took the decision to try and save as many animals as he could.
To recognize animals at the distance easily, he decided to add infrared(红外线的) cameras to update the drone, which would recognize the heat of animals and make it easier to identify those needing help. He says that the ability for drones to help and save animal lives is just too great. He also insists that although it works in cases of disasters for wild animals, it can also apply to the search of domestic ones.

8 . Neudy Rojop, 29, looks across the rough, rocky road in the small rural village of San Rafael Pacaya. It leads to the home where she grew up and where she still lives today.
When Rojop was about 10, her cousin, Carlos, was very sick. Without any local clinics (诊所), Rojop’s family couldn’t even figure out what the disease was. They could do nothing but wait. Growing up, she noticed how frequently many of those around her were getting sick. As a teenager, she started to realize her community needed better chance to health care. So she determined to go to a nursing school.
But her vision was beyond being a nurse. After graduation, she realized one person was not enough to make the community better. “The people here may have common diseases,” she thought. “Some are known. But there may be new diseases that we don’t know about.” She wanted to do something to keep any illness from being a threat in the first place. She wanted to train people and do some research to monitor these illnesses and try to provide early actions, or try out new ways to prevent some of them.
Over the next few years, she and a small team brought her vision to life. They provided measures that could limit the possible risks. Olson, one of her colleagues, recalled, “She has zero clinical experience and zero research experience at first, but now she is a superstar here. Her working place is usually busy with about 300 patients per month.”
Now Rojop starts her days with a morning meeting, making decisions, solving problems and setting priorities with her teammates. “In the past, I was so young that I could do nothing for my community,” she says. “But now I can help because I know how.”

As I was walking home from school, I came across a wallet lying on the path. I picked it up, checking on its contents. Five $20 notes inside! Wow, that’s a big money! I couldn’t believe my eyes. I looked around. No one in sight, I quickly put the wallet into my schoolbag and rushed home.
My mum was busy in the kitchen. I secretly slid into my room, carefully placed the wallet into my treasure box and locked it away. All that night, I was lost in thought and kept thinking about the money inside, twisting and turning. The thought of buying myself a bike with the 100 dollars flashed across my mind. I had wanted a bike for a long time, but each time my mom always said we couldn’t afford one. But how could I explain to my mum where I got the money? Suddenly I remembered an upcoming school science competition would offer a $100 prize to the winner. “Why couldn’t I tell my mum that I have won the prize?” A perfect excuse indeed!
I got out of bed and took out the wallet from the treasure box again. This time I noticed there was an old photo inside besides the money. The woman in the photo looked like Mara, my science teacher! I was sleepless all night to wait for the sunrise.
