Tom was surprised. “You mean your brother gave it to you and it cost you nothing. Sir, I wish.…” He hesitated (犹豫). Jack thought of course (路线), he knew what Tom wanted, but what Tom said surprised him greatly.

“I wish,” Tom went on, “that I could be a brother like that.”

Jack looked at Tom in surprise, and then he said again, “Would you like to take a ride (搭车) in my car?” “Oh, yes, I’d love to,” Tom answered. After a short ride, Tom turned and with his eyes shining, said, “Sir, would you mind driving in front of my house?”

Jack smiled a little. He thought he knew what Tom wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big car. But Jack was wrong again.

The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her dear grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled under her covers, burying her face. From where I stood, I saw her back slightly up and down. Obviously, she was sobbing. That was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.

Slowly I began to move.

He was shocked, staring at one dunk after another.

At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for Jayce — he’d see a shining role model with a seemingly similar born disability. And had it stayed just that, Lewis would have been happy. But little did she know that a family friend had already reached out to the Des Moines Register, asking the newspaper to help set up a meeting with Trashaun to build Jayce’s confidence.

“It reassured me,” said Lewis. “I know in my heart that everything’s going to be OK. Trashaun has grown up to be a wonderful kid. And I know Jayce is too.”

Trashaun did get serious with Jayce. Finally, the boys met at Washington Middle School on a Saturday afternoon a couple of months later, in April 2017, and they instantly bonded.

Eyes fixed in the horizon in expectation of another pheasant (野鸡) taking flight, Richard stepped on a thin crust (外壳) of snow on a canal. It collapsed and dropped him.

Realizing that he was in trouble and was going to hurt himself, Richard was suddenly picking up a lot of speed. His left leg hurt first, and he lay on his side to reach for his shotgun (猎枪), unloaded it and used it as a crutch (拐杖). He spent an hour and a half climbing the earthen canal backward to keep pressure off his bad leg. When he was partly up, he slipped and slid back down, because one of his feet got stuck between two rocks. Richard told himself that if he didn’t get himself out of the canal he wasn’t going to have a very good night.

Richard walked his foot free and climbed more slowly and cautiously out of the canal. Richard immediately realized the difficulty of the task before him. The accident occurred at about 2 p.m., and it was nearly 5 p.m. with the road far away and the sun setting.

Richard focused on crawling to safety. Even with his gun’s support, hopping (单足跳跃) was impractical. Instead, he sat down and pushed himself backward less than 40 inches at a time with his good leg. He was stubborn and sure that he must be persistent. He was in exhaustion and had more frequent breaks. Temperatures dropped below zero overnight, and his gloves and boots got wet. His hands and feet soon were completely numb.

“Weren’t we afraid of our parents? Don’t you remember you used to be nervous while talking to Dad? Yet we had better communication.” Sunita argued.

“Well, we are not living in the same age. We need to be more open: minded with children now.”

But Sunita was not satisfied with her explanation. She continued complaining about how Ashwini’s kids were dependent on her mother for everything.

Until Sunita left, she had almost brain washed Ashwini by constantly reminding her that she was not bringing up kids properly. When Sunita left, Ashwini let out a sigh of relief.

The ticket lady told the price to him again. The man didn’t have enough money. How could he turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus?

In fact, we were not rich. So I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.

“It’s beautiful,” my mother said when I pointed it out to her. “What a neat basket.”

I tried to hold off at first, but then I couldn’t stand it any longer. “Mom, please can I get it? I’ll do anything, please, Mom, please?” I was desperate.

“You know,” she said, gently rubbing my back while we both stared at what I believed was the coolest thing ever, “if you save up, you could buy this yourself.”

“By the time I have earned enough, it’ll have gone! Someone else will buy it. Please, Mom, please?”

“There might be another way,” she said.
