Navratri was almost here! Deepa couldn't wait for the party in the dance hall. She'd wear her special two-piece dress with tiny bells on it. She'd jump and skip just to hear those bells jingle.
"I think you should try it on," Mom said, handing Deepa the skirt. "You've grown a lot this year. It may not fit."
Deepa stepped into her skirt and tried pulling it up. Mom made a worried expression and said, "It's too small. Try the blouse." But that was small, too.
Deepa's throat tightened. Last year, Deepa and Mom had flown to India to visit Deepa's aunt, or Masi, for Navratri. Masi had taken Deepa shopping for a holiday dress. Deepa had loved the way the bells on Masi's anklets jingled as they walked through the market. When Deepa found a dress that jingled, too, she cried, "That one!"
For nine nights, she and her aunt had laughed and danced in the village with their skirts. And now the dress no longer fit.
"Can we have it changed?" Deepa asked. "We can try," said Mom. But when the tailor looked at the dress, he shook his head. He said it could only be made smaller. That afternoon, Deepa and her mom went to an Indian store in the mall and picked out a dress covered with little mirrors. It didn't feel special. But it fit. Deepa tried getting into the holiday spirit as they drove to the Navratri party. But her dress was too quiet.
In the parking lot, Mom opened the car trunk to put away her bag. Deepa noticed a familiar bag. "Is that my dress?" she asked. "I forgot to put it away," Mom said, closing the trunk. No one would ever see it again, Deepa thought sadly.
As they neared the dance hall, Deepa heard drums beating and people laughing. Inside, hundreds of dancers clacked colorful sticks together in a circle. The room felt warm and alive.
A lady danced past and her little girl followed, jumping along holding sticks tied with bells. Deepa smiled. It was like watching herself with Masi. Later, paper plates thick with sauce were served.

One day in summer vacation, I was in the chemist’s shop with my son who is fifteen years old. My son is talkative and his dream is becoming a famous speaker. So he loves engaging with strangers in public if they are friendly and safe. That day he said “Hi” to a kid and began a pleasant conversation. The kid called Jack was wearing the uniform of the senior high school my son would attend next month so I pointed that out to my son. When we were leaving. Jack said, “See you at school.”
On the first day of school, Jack, who was in Senior Two, greeted my son at the school gate. They soon became good friends. When I went to pick up my son after school, they walked out side by side. Jack’s mother stopped her car, too. However, as I was packing my car with groceries, I found my son’s new uniforms were missing and we felt extremely anxious. Seeing the scene like this, Jack’s mother constantly comforted us. She drove up behind me and promised to offer me a bag of uniforms that no longer fitted her son. She gave me those clothes for nothing! I was overjoyed and I went and picked them up from her the next afternoon.
This may seem like a small kindness to some people but for me it is huge! I have been stressing quite a lot about the cost of uniforms for school. We are attempting to start a business with no capital and have financial difficulties at the moment. I also suffer from severe depression and anxiety and have had the really worst year in my life. I cannot even begin to explain how much I appreciate this small gesture from a complete stranger. It has relieved a bit of a burden from my shoulders. You never know when the small kindnesses, even simply a smile on the street, can be incredibly uplifting to a complete stranger
I asked Jack’s mother for her contact information, and in the following days we kept in touch, and gradually we became good friends, too.

A Good Idea to Help the Neighbor
The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy—his name was Bernard—had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don’t see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”

“Here you go. Up, up and away,” Chrissy yelled, as she pushed her little brother, Russell, on the swing(秋千). Russell smiled and kicked his feet. “Higher! Higher!” he shouted. “Okay, hang on. Here you go!” Chrissy stood forward and gave the swing an extra hard push. “Help!” Suddenly, Russell screamed.
The swing flew so high that it seemed that it might go flying off into the sky. Russell started to cry just as their mom came running over. “I’m sorry, Russell,” Chrissy said. “I didn’t mean to scare you. I guess I pushed a little too hard.” Their mom was angry with Chrissy and shouted, “Was it a little too hard? That was way too hard, Chrissy! How could you be so irresponsible?” Hearing the word “irresponsible”, Chrissy cried with tears filling her brown eyes.
A week before, her teacher had told her that she was irresponsible for being late for class. And a few days before her dad had used the word “irresponsible” when he blamed her for not hanging up her clothes. “I’m sorry, Mom,” Chrissy said sadly. She turned away and started to walk slowly down the path that wound through the park. That unpleasant word “irresponsible” kept going through Chrissy’s head.
Suddenly, Chrissy saw a little girl walking across the grass, heading up a small hill. Chrissy looked around for the parent, but there was no one else in sight. Chrissy knew there was a running stream on the other side of that hill. “It’s dangerous,” Chrissy thought. She ran as fast as she could towards the little girl. When she reached the girl, she stepped in front her, stopping her from running towards the water.
Chrissy picked up the little girl and carried her towards the playground, looking anxiously for her mother. “Where’s your mommy?” she asked the little girl, although she thought the girl was probably too young to talk. She was surprised when the little girl pointed to a distant house on the other side of the fence.

Kathy's family vacation to the beach was usually the highlight of her summer. This year, however, her parents announced a new rule: no phones for the entire week.
“But my friends will be expecting updates about the trip, "Kathy complained. Kathy's mom gave her a serious look. Unwillingly, Kathy handed her phone over and her mom locked it away.
The drive to the beach house took most of the day. As they turned off the highway onto country back roads, the clouds darkened. Rain started to pour. "Even more beautiful in the rain," her mother said. " What do you think, Kathy?" Kathy glared at her mom. "Beautiful, "she muttered.
That night after dinner, Kathy wandered into the kitchen, where her father was washing dishes. She gave her father a loving look and said in her sweetest voice, "Couldn’t I have my phone back, just for one second? Just so I can tell everyone what an amazing time I'm having?”
“Can't, "he said. "It's not here. Remember?" Kathy was very annoyed. Having nothing better to do, she examined the dusty bookcase in the living room. The books looked as dull as the weather. On the top shelf, however, she spotted a puzzle. She took it, emptied the pieces on the table, and began to sort them.
After what seemed like a few minutes, she looked up. It was past ten o'clock. She had been working for almost two hours! She yawned. The puzzle was less than half done, but she was exhausted. So, she went to bed.
When Kathy awoke the next morning, she jumped out of bed and threw open the curtains. A blazing sun was rising over the blue ocean. The sky was cloudless. The scene reminded Kathy of a photo that her friend betty had recently sent her.
This view was even better. It would leave everyone speechless. Kathy dashed to her bedside table and reached for her phone. But there was nothing there. She sighed. Still, she wandered in front of the window, admiring the sunrise.

But since her grandpa died six years earlier, Jules hadn't visited the farm.
Now Jules opened her phone again, praying for bars (手机信号),but there was nothing. She felt frustrated and bored. Looking out of the window, Jules saw nothing but the large farmland and the small forest between Grandma and her neighbor's farmland. She felt even more bored.
The large corn field outside was rent by a fat and ugly-looking man now. After Grandpa died, Grandma just worked in her garden and mainly grew vegetables and fruits. When she needed other food, she just bought it in town twice a month. Jules had asked Grandma if she felt lonely here, the answer was NO. "I've got all I need right here. Your grandpa is still with me, in my heart, and this land is all I have ever known," Grandma said.
After Grandma went to bed at night, Jules decided to read her novel a bit before bed. Two pages into her reading, Jules heard something outside the window. Walking close to the window, Jules looked out and found a boy about her age standing down there in the moonlight. With a flashlight under his face, the boy was holding his finger over his lips. He motioned (示意)for Jules to come outside. She shook her head, feeling slightly nervous, but the boy just kept motioning. Then, Jules decided that anything would be more interesting than bed and she got out of the house quietly.
