The Welsh online media has suggested this is the view from Camberwell where Bowen lives, rather than Criccieth — a journalist’s whistle-stop tour of a country he last resided in more than 40 years ago. Fellow BBC journalist Welsh speaker Huw Edwards responded to that criticism: “We are all products of upbringing — this take is 1970s Cardiff.” Edwards was even ruder about an attack on Welsh by Jonathan Meades in The Critic. “So long as it’s a hobby language it is as harmless as a Sunday painter,” wrote Meades. “But in pockets of Snowdonia and mid-Wales it is a tool not only of communication but of identity and exclusivity, thus of self-harm.” To which Edwards responded: “Meades is a brilliant writer and I have enjoyed his work over many years. I can only assume he’s crazy. Nothing else can explain this rubbish.”
Bowen’s argument is that because bilingualism (双语) has become essential for many jobs in Welsh government and media, the English-speaking majority has been disadvantaged. Meades is more concerned with a project to create a million Welsh speakers (a third of the population) by 2050. At present, only a fifth of the population speaks Welsh regularly. Such views are, however, either outdated or exaggerated (夸张的).
Largely rural Welsh-speaking Wales was discovering new confidence, thanks to the start of the Welsh-language channel S4C in 1982 and the growth of Welsh-medium education. But Welsh-speaking Wales is not responsible for the difficulties of English-speaking Wales, and the two have to find a way to coexist. The survival of Welsh is a miracle, and every Welsh person, whether or not they speak it, should celebrate that fact.

I preferred my English classes to be taught only in English, because it is helpful for us to improve an ability to speak and listen.
I have strong interested in English and foreign culture, so I’d like to be total absorbed in the atmosphere of English. I can quickly make a progress. However, since we are all English beginners, it’s really hard understand the words which is difficult. So they need mother language to understand sometime.
My viewpoint is that we should use Chinese as a minor way to explain something which is difficult for students.

High school students recommend ren as message to the world The Chinese character ren, a word that generally means “benevolence (仁)”, has been selected by high school students in a poll (民意调查) to highlight Chinese culture around the world. The character ren was selected by 8.33 percent of the 3,000 respondents who took part in the poll, according to one of the organisers, a student from a high school. It was followed by the characters ai, yi, meng and xiao, which mean ‘‘love”, “righteousness”, “dream’’ and “filial piety (孝)”. Those characters ranked in the “top-20 most beautiful Chinese characters”. (China Daily, March 6, 2022. Page 4) |

6 . For the past three decades, Richard Sears, aged 71, has been dedicated to one thing: telling the stories behind Chinese characters.
His interest in Chinese language and characters dates back to 1972, when he was 22, majoring in physics at Portland State University in Oregon. “I realized only 7 percent of the world speak English as a mother tongue. I wondered what it was like to speak another language.” By 1990, Sears was already a fluent Chinese speaker, but did not know how to read. To Sears, the characters were complex with many strokes(笔画)and almost no apparent logic.
“I am a physicist, so I don’t like blind memorization in learning languages. I knew that Chinese characters came from pictographs(象形文字)and I wanted to know the stories behind them.” In the process of the study, Sears soon realized that many of the explanations could not possibly be true. To pick out the good ones, he decided to computerize the characters, and then scanned about 96,000 ancient characters.
The database of ancient characters came into being, but he wanted to explain the step-by-step evolvement of these characters from the original pictographs to the modern simplified forms. He then got his website up in 2002 and named it Chinese Etymology(词源), where viewers can check for free the evolvement of Chinese characters in various forms. Between 2002 and 2011, the website would get 11,000 or 15,000 hits a day. Suddenly, in January 2011,clicks to the website went up to 600,000 within one day. Overnight he became Uncle Hanzi, a nickname given by Chinese netizens, after one of them shared his website on Chinese social media.
Besides the website, in September last year, Sears set up his studio, focusing on applying AR, animation and artificial intelligence to telling stories of Chinese culture and character origins, in Nanjing as part of the local authority’s plan to cultivate talent in the culture sector. “They have both entertainment value for the young and educational value and can teach the origins of Chinese characters. We also want to make videos with a high educational value for other platforms for Chinese and foreign learners of Chinese characters.” Sears says.

There are several ways improve our English writing skills, such as keeping a diary, learning some good writings with heart, doing a lot of reading, etc. As for me, I prefer keeping a diary. Comparing with other forms of writing, keeping a diary is easier and take less time. Beside, it can help us form the habit of thinking in English. If we can keep this practice, and we will gradually learn how to express us in English. What’s more, keeping a diary can be like talking about one of our close friend, sharing our happiness or sadness. In the word, keeping a diary enables us to improve our written English.
8 . You’ll probably be familiar with the North American spelling of the word “airplane”. However, if you’ve ever been on an international flight leaving the United States and going to another English-speaking country like the United Kingdom, you’ve probably noticed that there are a few differences between the American and British spellings of words with the same meaning.
Let’s look at the root of the phenomenon.
There’s a good reason why words that mean the same thing are spelled differently, and why that will continue to happen. “
A.Every country has different culture |
B.Your spelling tells people where you’re from |
C.The word “airplane” happens to be an example |
D.Airplane is a much better word than aeroplane |
E.American English and British English have similar historical origins |
F.There’s a lot of history that goes beyond words and dives deep into politics, government, and science |
G.A lot of words in the English language are borrowed from other languages, like Latin, Greek, and French |
9 . I have a drawer full of letters to Santa. Each year my children would write up their Christmas wish lists. They were polite requests for the latest game or toy. As the children got older, they would give Santa some hints(提示)on where to buy their presents.
Those letters taught my children a valuable lesson about writing: It has a purpose. Sometimes our purpose is to achieve something;other times it may be to entertain, inform, or persuade.
Christmas is a great time of year for children to communicate with others through writing. When children write for real audiences and real purposes, they can learn to choose their words accordingly.
There is nothing wrong with this kind of writing. It suits the audience and the purpose and gets the job done.
A.It isn’t that these young people can’t write. |
B.But it is always purposeful-or at least it should be. |
C.The age of pen-and-paper letter writing may have passed. |
D.As a result, each year they received something they wanted. |

Dear Tony,
I am glad that you are keen on Chinese idioms. Chinese idioms, mainly consist of four or more Chinese characters, have been appealing to those absorbed in Chinese. As matter of fact, they were an indispensable part of Chinese culture. The benefits of learning it can be listed as following.
First, with a great many of Chinese idioms widely used in our daily life, having a good knowledge of them contribute to better understanding both spoken and written Chinese. Second, they usually possess vivid and profound meanings, making which people try to convey more convincing.
As far as I am concern, I have a preference for the stories behind some Chinese idioms. Not only are they particular interesting, but they also tend to teach some wisdom. I sincerely hope you can learn them well.
Yours,
Li Hua
