文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是威尔士语及其在威尔士社会中的地位和影响的争议。文章通过BBC驻外记者Jeremy Bowen的亲身经历和观点,以及威尔士语发言人Huw Edwards对另一位评论家Jonathan Meades的回应,揭示了威尔士社会中关于威尔士语使用和推广的争议。
1 .        BBC foreign correspondent Jeremy Bowen’s recent assignment — a three-part series on Radio 4 in which he made “a personal journey through Wales”, the country of his birth — must still have left him a little shocked. Bowen, born in Cardiff but living in England and a non-Welsh speaker, did the most dangerous thing — he attacked what he saw as the way the Weish-speaking minority in Wales dominates the cultural conversation. This argument has not gone down well in the land of his fathers.

The Welsh online media has suggested this is the view from Camberwell where Bowen lives, rather than Criccieth — a journalist’s whistle-stop tour of a country he last resided in more than 40 years ago. Fellow BBC journalist Welsh speaker Huw Edwards responded to that criticism: “We are all products of upbringing — this take is 1970s Cardiff.” Edwards was even ruder about an attack on Welsh by Jonathan Meades in The Critic. “So long as it’s a hobby language it is as harmless as a Sunday painter,” wrote Meades. “But in pockets of Snowdonia and mid-Wales it is a tool not only of communication but of identity and exclusivity, thus of self-harm.” To which Edwards responded: “Meades is a brilliant writer and I have enjoyed his work over many years. I can only assume he’s crazy. Nothing else can explain this rubbish.”

Bowen’s argument is that because bilingualism (双语) has become essential for many jobs in Welsh government and media, the English-speaking majority has been disadvantaged. Meades is more concerned with a project to create a million Welsh speakers (a third of the population) by 2050. At present, only a fifth of the population speaks Welsh regularly. Such views are, however, either outdated or exaggerated (夸张的).

Largely rural Welsh-speaking Wales was discovering new confidence, thanks to the start of the Welsh-language channel S4C in 1982 and the growth of Welsh-medium education. But Welsh-speaking Wales is not responsible for the difficulties of English-speaking Wales, and the two have to find a way to coexist. The survival of Welsh is a miracle, and every Welsh person, whether or not they speak it, should celebrate that fact.

1. Why was Bowen recently shocked?
A.He had a narrow escape in Wales.
B.He was refused entry into his fatherland.
C.He was assigned to do a series about Wales.
D.He was criticized for his Radio program about Wales.
2. What was Edwards’ attitude toward Meades’ comments?
A.Disapproving.B.Supportive.C.Tolerant.D.Uncaring.
3. What put the English-speaking majority at a disadvantage?
A.They could not speak two languages.
B.They held outdated ideas about language.
C.A third of the Welsh could speak the native language.
D.The government attached less importance to English.
4. What does the author say about the survival of Welsh?
A.It establishes Welsh dominance.
B.It is unexpected and welcome.
C.It occurs at the cost of English-speaking Wales.
D.It owes to the efforts of Welsh-speaking Wales.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了语言和音乐有什么相似之处?无论我们生活在世界的那个地方,语言是我们日常生活的一部分。同样,音乐是许多人生活的一部分,语言和音乐在我们的文化中扮演着重要的角色,它们有很多相同之处。

2 . Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world. Similarly, music is a part of many people’s lives.     1     Here are some of their similarities.

Both language and music have a writing system

2     Similarly, we use notes to keep a record of music. Just as you are reading this collection of letters on the paper and find meaning in it, musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music which we can hear. By reading pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. For example, we can read the ideas or hear the composition of someone who lived hundreds of years ago, which is really quite exciting.

    3

You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language they use. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, which gives us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.

Both share emotion

How do you know that I am angry? Of course, you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words.     4     Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song.     5

A.Both vary with culture.
B.Different culture makes different music.
C.Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy.
D.Both language and music play a huge role in our lives.
E.In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters.
F.We use music to express emotions, combining it with language in form of lyrics.

5 . When you are learning English, you find it not clever to put an English sentence, word for word, into your own language. Take the sentence “How do you do?” as an example. If you look up each word in the dictionary, one at a time, what is your translation? It must be a wrong sentence in your own language.

Languages do not just have different sounds, they are different in many ways. It’s important to master the rules for word order in the study of English, too. If the speaker puts words in a wrong order, the listener can’t understand the speaker’s sentence easily. Sometimes when the order of words in an English sentence is changed, the meaning of the sentence changes. But sometimes the order is changed, the meaning of the sentence doesn’t change. Let’s see the difference between the two pairs of sentences.

“She only likes apples.”

“Only she likes apples.”

“I have seen the film already.”

“I have already seen the film.”

When you are learning English, you must do your best to get the spirit(实质) of the language and use it as the English speaker does.

A.we shouldn’t put every word into our own language
B.we should look up every word in the dictionary

2. The writer thinks it is _______ in learning English.
A.difficult to understand different sounds
B.possible to remember the word order

A.is the same as “Only she likes apples.”
B.is different from “Only she likes apples.”

A.the meaning of an English sentence always changes with the order of the words

6 . When Carlos Westez died at the age of 76, a language died, too. Westez, more commonly known as Red Thunder Cloud, was the last speaker of the Native American language, Catawba.

Anyone who wants to hear different songs of the Catawba tribe can get in touch with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington,D.C.,where,back in the 1940s,Red Thunder Cloud recorded a series of songs for future generations. They are all that is left of the Catawba language. The language that people used to speak is gone forever.

We all know the damage that modern industry can do to the world's ecology. However, few people know the effect that widely spoken languages have on other languages and ways of life. English has spread all over the world. Chinese, Spanish, Russian, and Hindi have become powerful languages, as well. As these languages become more powerful, their use as tools of business and culture increases. When this happens, hundreds of languages that are spoken by only a few people die out.

Scholars believe there are about 6,000 languages around the world, but more than half of them could die out within the next 100 years. Araki is a native language of the island of Vanuatu, located in the Pacific Ocean. It is spoken by only a few older adults, so like Catawba,Araki will soon disappear. Many languages of Ethiopia will have the same fate because each one has only a few speakers. In the Americas, 100 languages also are dying out.

Red Thunder Cloud was one of the first to recognize the threat of language death and to try to do something about it. He was not actually born into the Catawba tribe, and the language was not his mother tongue. However,he was a frequent visitor to the Catawba reservation in South Carolina, where he learned the language. The songs he sang for the Smithsonian Institution helped to make Native American music popular. Now he is gone, and the language is dead.

1. Why did Westez record songs for the Smithsonian Institution?
A.To fight for Native Americans’ rights.B.To reserve the Catawba language.
C.To make Native American music popular.D.To help young people learn Catawba songs.
2. Which of the following led to the disappearance of Catawba?
A.Widely spoken languages.B.Changes of lifestyles.
C.Population control.D.Modern industry.
3. How is paragraph 4 mainly developed?
A.By analyzing causes.B.By giving examples.
C.By following time order.D.By making comparisons.
4. What can we learn about Red Thunder Cloud?
A.He passed away in the 1940s.B.He was born into the Catawba tribe.
C.He learned Catawba from his mother.D.He used to visit the Catawba reservation.

7 . Oxford English Dictionary(OED) announced on November 23 for the first time that it has chosen not to name one single word of the year, but many words for the “special” year 2020. Describing 2020 as “a year which cannot be neatly summarized in one single word”. OED said on Monday that there were too many words to sum up the events of 2020. From more than 11 billion words found in web-based news, blogs and other text sources, its lexicographers(词典编纂者)revealed what the dictionary described as “great shifts in language data and frequency rises in new words” over the past 12 months.

Most words of the year are coronavirus-related, including coronavirus, lockdown, circuit-breaker, keyworkers and face masks. The report said the word "coronavirus" dates back to the 1960s and was previously "mainly used by scientific and medical specialists". But by April this year it had become one of the most frequently used nouns in the English language, beyond even the usage of the word "time". It said use of the word “pandemic” has increased by more than 57,000 percent this year.

The revolution in working habits during the pandemic has also affected language, with both “remote” and “remotely” seeing more than 300 percent growth in use since March. “On mute(静音)”and “unmute” have seen 500 percent rises since March, while the words “workation” and “staycation” also increased drastically.

Casper Grathwohl, the president of Oxford Dictionaries, said. “I've never witnessed a year in language like the one we've just had. The Oxford team was identifying hundreds of significant new words and usages as the year unfolded.” “2020 has been filled with new words unlike any other,” Grathwohl added.

The OED's announcement mirrored the huge influence of the COVID-19 on the people from all walks of life. To bring life back to normal, countries such as Britain, China, Germany, Russia and the United States are racing against time to develop coronavirus vaccines.

1. How did the lexicographers find words to summarize the events of 2020?
A.By consulting some experts, scholars and authors.
B.By consulting some reporters and hosts of news programs.
C.By referring to web-based news, blogs and other text sources.
D.By referring to magazines, newspapers and other printed materials.
2. What did Casper Grathwohl think of the words for 2020 compared to other years?
A.They are precise.B.They are subjective.
C.They are reasonable.D.They are unique.
3. Which of the following best explains “drastically” underlined in paragraph 3?
A.Sharply.B.Steadily.C.Similarly.D.Slightly.
4. What can we know about the word "corona virus" according to the text?
A.It is a word created in 2020.
B.It might first appear in the 1960s.
C.It is the only named word of 2020.
D.It has been frequently used since the 1960s.

9 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

A smiling face with tears, or “Tears of joy”, was chosen as the most popular emoji globally in 2016, according to a report    1    (publish)by Chinese tech startup Kika.

In 2015,emoji was the country’s fastest-growing language in the UK and “Tears of joy”also became the Oxford English Dictionary’s word of the year,    2    (make)it popular on social media worldwide.

As a language expert pointed out, the reasons    3    this are as follows. For one thing, with the development of the Internet, especially the     4    (popular)of smartphones, English alone is proving not enough to meet the needs of 21st-century digital communication. For    5    , emojis can offer greater freedom than verbal language. Meanwhile, compared with text messages, they are often more intuitive(直观的)and     6    (simple),which is also the reason why more and more People choose    7    (express)their emotions and ideas by using emojis.

Even if you don’t send emojis yourself, you will    8    (probable)receive them.

However, nobody can definitely-tell     9    emojis will finally come to look something more like traditional language that we understand and use daily some day or they are just in fashion for    10    while like many things. “After all, it’s an addition to language rather than a language itself,”Dr Drummond says.

Dear friends,

It is a great honor to share with you my experience in making English speeches.

To tell a truth, my spoken English used to be a big headache for me. Due to my terrible pronunciation, I often got misunderstood or even laughed by others. I never succeed in speech competitions. Therefore, I refused to give up. Every day I spent two hours listen to English programs to improve my oral skills. To my joy, my effort was finally paid off. I made steadily progress and managed to win prizes in some speech competition.

So problems can help us grow if we deal with it bravely and properly. This is which I’ve learned from my experience.
