Enlarge the vocabulary, as we know, is must for us to learn English well. Students told me that if they knew the meanings of more words, he could do better in the exams. But how is the way to memorize new words effective? Doing more reading and learn the words in context will work. The more you read, the larger number of word you will know. After reading, you’d better to retell what you’ve read in your own way, where will help you use the words flexibly. If you have your vocabulary enlarged, you are more likely to make yourself became a better learner.

I preferred my English classes to be taught only in English, because it is helpful for us to improve an ability to speak and listen.
I have strong interested in English and foreign culture, so I’d like to be total absorbed in the atmosphere of English. I can quickly make a progress. However, since we are all English beginners, it’s really hard understand the words which is difficult. They need mother language to understand sometime.
So my viewpoint is that we should use Chinese as a minor way to explain something which is difficult for students.
4 . What makes a word real? Who has the power to make those kinds of official decisions about words? Those are the questions many people have in mind. When most people say a word isn’t real, what they mean is that it doesn’t appear in a dictionary. That, of course, raises some other questions, including, who writes dictionaries?
Now, dictionaries are good resources, but they are changeable. If you ask dictionary editors, what they’ll tell you is that they’re just trying to keep up with people as people change the language. They’re watching what people say and what people write and trying to figure out what’s going to stick and what’s not going to stick.
Every January, dictionary editors go to the American Dialect Society Meeting every year, where among other things, they decide on the word of the year. There are about 200 or 300 people who come. Some of them are the best known linguists in the United States. In the past, some of the winners have been “staycation” to describe a vacation spent at home and “tweet” to describe a post made on the social networking service Twitter.
So how does a word get into a dictionary? It gets in because people use it and people keep using it, and dictionary editors are paying attention to people. If a community of speakers is using a word and knows what it means, it’s real. That word might be informal and that word might be a word that you think is illogical or unnecessary, but as long as people are using the word, it is real. I hope that what you can do is to find language change not annoying but fun and interesting, just the way dictionary editors do. I hope you can enjoy being part of the creativity that is continually remaking our language and keeping it alive.

At the age of 10, I begin to chat with foreigners. At first, I was very shy, and gradually with foreigners’ help, I became more and more confidence. The following year, I went to Lintong with two foreigners as our guide. We visited the Terra-Cotta Warriors Museum where we took lots of photos, enjoying the beautiful scenery. After that, they went to buy souvenir. The sellers couldn’t speak English. Though it was little hard for me, I tried my best to translate their words on both sides. Finally, the two foreigners accompanying by me bought satisfactory goods. This unforgettable experience made me to understand where “Practice makes perfect.” means.
7 . The world’s language system is at a crossroads and a new linguistic order is about to appear. That is the conclusion of a recent study authored by David Graddol, a linguistic researcher.
In the mid-twentieth century, nine percent of the world’s population was estimated to have spoken English as a first language. By 2050, the number is expected to be just five percent. English is still ranked as the language with the third largest number of native speakers, but Arabic and Hindi are expected to catch up by around 2050. Instead of one language acting as a “world language,” it seems likely that no one language will dominate in the near future. Linguists expect that English will continue to be important, but Mandarin Chinese will probably be the next must-learn language, especially in Asia.
However, just as the relative number of native speakers of English is decreasing, a separate study shows that English is expanding its dominance in the world of science. The dominance of one language in the area of science allows for greater international collaboration and research, making it possible to publish scientific articles to broader audiences. More than 90 percent of journal literature in some scientific fields is already published in English. “More and more scientists who are non-native speakers of English will need to become multilingual,” Graddol says. The predominance (优势) of English in science will result in new generations of speakers of other languages who acquire English to exchange ideas and discoveries with scientists in other countries.
In addition, multilingual employees will gain an edge in international businesses. As China plays an increasingly prominent global role, employers in parts of Asia are already looking beyond English to Mandarin Chinese as the most important language to facilitate the global exchange of goods and services. Linguists anticipate that in the future, most people will speak more than one language. Furthermore, it’s likely that speakers will switch between languages for routine tasks. Monolingual speakers may have a difficult time participating fully in a multilingual society. Some monolingual speakers, especially native English speakers, according to Graddol, “have been too proud about the lack of need to learn other languages.”

8 . Zhou Youguang was the inventor of Pinyin, a spelling system that converts (转化) Chinese characters into words with the Roman alphabet. The system, adopted by China in 1958, gives readers an important tool to pronounce the Chinese characters that they are unfamiliar with.
While it is not the first system to Romanize Chinese, Pinyin has become the most widely accepted tool to teach a language that has disparate dialects in different parts of China.
Beyond China’s borders. Pinyin allows the standardization of Chinese names. For instance, it’s a big reason why the name Westerners commonly use for the Chinese capital has shifted from “Peking” to “Beijing”. And it’s why many other such names have changed dramatically along with it.
And yet Zhou, the man behind one of the most important innovations in the 20th century, said he was unwilling to take on the task in the mid-1950s. At the time, he was an economist and only recently returned to China.
“I said I was an amateur and that I couldn’t do the job,” he told the BBC in 2012, laughing. “But they said, ‘It’s a new job. Everybody is an amateur.’ Everybody urged me to change professions. So I did. In 1955, I abandoned economics and started studying writing systems.”
The committee led by Zhou spent three years working on its alphabetic system. “Some people made fun of us, joking that it had taken us a long time to deal with just 26 letters,” he said in the interview.
Others took the committee’s invention very seriously, however. The Chinese government immediately introduced Pinyin in schools. The international community eventually adopted it as the standard Romanization for Chinese writing, as well, with the United Nations doing so in 1986.
Before the invention of Pinyin, 85% of Chinese people could not read. Now, about 95% can read. Pinyin has also played a vital role in determining the ways mobile phones and computers recognize Chinese characters.
