I wasn’t sure what her age was at the time but she already looked very grand-motherly. She was soft spoken and had a very gentle sense of humor. Unlike some teachers she never shouted at or criticized her students. To me it felt like having a second grandmother as my teacher. Every day, I arrived at her classroom and sat happily at my desk with a big smile on my face. Throughout all my years of school I always remembered the times I spent in her classroom the most fondly.

One such memory is still with me to this day. We were doing math problems that were printed on the chalkboard while Mrs. Gross walked through the classroom checking on our work. I finished first and lifted my head up just as Mrs. Gross walked up behind me. She looked at my work and smiled. Then she said: “This is really good work, Joe. You are a very smart boy.” As she walked on she gently touched my shoulder and I got an exciting feeling in my heart. It felt so good to be seen. It felt so good to be appreciated. From that moment on I always tried my best. I always worked hard, I always wanted to be as smart as she thought I already was.

Would I have done as good in school or in life if I hadn’t had Mrs. Gross as my first grade teacher? I don’t think so. She awakened a desire in me to be the best person I could be. With her gentle love and encouragement I started down a wonderful path that I am sill on today, Mrs. Gross showed me just how much effect one soul can have on another.

Early one weekend morning. I was sleeping like a log when the telephone rang. It was Grandma. She invited us to her home in the countryside. After a quick breakfast, Dad and I drove to Grandma's.

Once we arrived, we were both thrilled by the breathtaking landscape. The plum trees in the backyard were ripe with fruit, while millions of wildflowers colored the valley. Grandma prepared delicious lunch including her special homemade apple jam, which was my favorite. Talking and laughing, we didn't even notice that it was late in the afternoon. Though somewhat cooler than it had been that morning,Grandma suggested that we take her homemade wooden boat for a tour along the nearby river.

Seated in the boat, looking up at the sky. I felt like the clouds were greeting us cheerfully from above. In the vast fields, the golden trees were like brides in the sun. The breeze skimmed over the surface of the field, carrying the sweet smell of the flowers. "It is so nice to spend some quality time with family." Dad murmured. "It feels like we're on an adventure." I added. "It's been so much fun!"

While we were admiring the splendid setting around us. the weather started getting hot and humid again. At first, we ignored this change, but when dad looked up at the sky, he saw dark, low clouds were approaching us. Then a fierce gale（大风）sprang up. Lightning flashed within the black clouds, followed by a roar of thunder. "Row!" Dad shouted, trembling, "A tornado（龙卷风）is coming!"

8 . One of the most inspiring quotes I ever heard was by Brian Tracy. He said: “The difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is that successful people fail many more times than unsuccessful people.” I personally experienced its wisdom right after my first book was published. Like many authors, I expected hundreds of bookstore customers lining up for me to sign copies for them. I’m afraid to say, it didn’t quite happen like that.

My first signing was arranged at the largest book store in the city. Filled with anticipation, I was put into a private signing room in the beautiful store. However, not a single customer entered the room. As each minute passed, I became increasingly anxious.

After 90 minutes of long waiting I was absolutely distraught.

For the four years writing the book. I had felt a sense of mission and purpose like never before in my life. Working a full 8-hour day in my clinic. I had to get into bed by 9:30 pm every day, so I could wake up at 5:30 in the morning and have two hours of writing before heading into my clinic. Before I ever began each writing session, I would close my eyes for 10 minutes and then whisper, “Please allow me the words to touch just one person’s life.”

Now sitting there alone at my first book signing, I wondered if my entire life wasn’t just a big joke. At that moment, just when I couldn't feel any worse, a middle-aged couple walked into the room. I managed to hide my emotions and introduced myself and my book. The couple turned to each other, and the husband nodded to his wife. She then told me, “I think we’ll get the book.”

“We’re buying it,” she said hesitantly, "because we lost our son two years ago. Maybe your story will help us get over it.”

At that moment, I knew if I never sold another copy of the book, my four years of writing it had served its purpose. Although I would have many more challenging years until my book caught on and sold well, this couple’s story was all the motivation I needed at that point to keep me moving ahead.

I had hardly sat down on the train and opened a bar of chocolate     1     a really old man with huge bags sat down across from me. I said hello     2     him, smiling sweetly and then I suddenly thought, "Why not offer him a piece of chocolate?” So I did. He was quite     3    (surprise), but accepted and thanked me. He said that people didn't usually do things like this for     4    (strange) at least that was what I understood, because he was speaking a really     5    (usual) dialect.

Then he opened one of his bags and gave me     6     handful of freshly picked cherries,     7    (explain) that he had just taken them from his orchard. The cherries were really lovely, better than those in the shops, and I enjoyed them very much. It had been just an impulse(冲动) to offer him a piece of chocolate, but if I had not done so, I would never     8    (taste) those lovely cherries,     9     I didn't even know he had at the time. Life is about giving and taking, and it’s     10    (general) true that if you give, you will receive.
