In Africa, the honeyguide birds can respond to human calls to lead people to honey—what scientists describe as a mutualistic interaction,   or one that benefits both creatures. The birds tweet and fly from tree to tree to guide honey seekers to hidden bee nests, typically inside trees. Then, humans open the trees to find honey, and the birds can dine on beeswax, their favorite food.

Dogs have an excellent sense of smell, which is why the folks at Penn Vet Working Dog Center are training dogs to identify the smell of cancer using tissue and blood samples from people who suffer. The scientists hope to develop a way for dogs to screen samples first, then perform follow-up testing on the samples the dogs flagged—a system for spotting cancer in its early stages.

The Wise Father

Hari’s father was a successful businessman who lad a chain of well-known, seven-star restaurants, but the only love of his life was his only daughter, Hari. So she had been provided with everything she ever wanted since she was born. She lived an extraordinary life and always felt that she was not an ordinary kid.

When Hari came back after graduation, her father asked her to join his company as an accountant. However, she was naturally not happy with that. She wanted to work on a higher post as a CEO of the company while her father wanted her to start as an ordinary girl.

One day, there was an emergency situation in the company. One of the restaurants had fewer employees because of sudden resignations (辞职). The restaurant was desperately short-staffed. Hari’s father and other major employees came up with the idea that they would make their way to that restaurant to help them. He asked her daughter to accompany him and the other employees to the restaurant.

When she entered the restaurant, she was hit with the air of tension around the employees. Everybody was busy doing something and the restaurant was in complete chaos. She was suddenly pushed by his father to the cash counter to attend to the customers there. When she went to the back of the kitchen to get an order of a customer, she noticed a tower of dishes that were unwashed. Just as she was going to go back to the cash counter, her father approached her in a hurry and said, “Hari, will you please help us do the dishes? There is no one here who is available and I see you still have five to ten minutes before another customer comes for the payment.”

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章介绍了Gertrude B.Elion的求学及令人印象深刻的职业生涯,并且介绍了她最终取得的成就。

3 . Born in New York in 1918, scientist Gertrude B. Elion had an impressive career, during which she developed medicines to cure many major diseases. Elion spent her early youth in Manhattan. She attended senior high school and had, in her words, an unbelievable thirst for knowledge.

Influenced by the death of her grandfather, who died of cancer, Elion entered Hunter College at the age of 15 and graduated in chemistry at the age of 19. She had difficulty finding employment after graduation because many laboratories refused to hire women chemists. She found a part-time job as a lab assistant and went back to school at New York University. Elion worked as a high school teacher for a few years after finishing work on her master’s degree.

The start of World War II created more opportunities for women. At the age of 26, Elion was able to get a job at Burroughs Welcome, where she began a 40-year partnership with Dr. George H. Hitchings. Her thirst for knowledge impressed Dr. Hitchings, and he permitted her to take on more responsibility.

Elion and Hitchings set out on a course of creating medicines by studying the chemical composition of diseased cells. Rather than relying on old trial-and-error methods, they used the differences in biochemistry between normal human cells and pathogens(病原体)to design medicines. In all, Elion obtained 45 patents on medicine and was awarded 23 honorary degrees.

In 1988, Elion received the Nobel Prize for Medicine, together with George H. Hlitchings and Sir James Black. She received other awards for her work, including the National Medal of Science in 1991, and that same year, she became the first woman to be absorbed into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. 5 . Spring is coming, and it is time for those about to graduate to look for jobs. Competition is tough, so job seekers must carefully consider their personal choices. Whatever we are wearing, our family and friends may accept us, but the workplace may not.

A high school newspaper editor said it is unfair for companies to discourage visible tattoos (纹身), nose rings, or certain dress styles. It is true you can’t judge a book by its cover, yet people do “cover” themselves in order to convey certain messages. What we wear, including tattoos and nose rings, is an expression of who we are. Just as people convey messages about themselves with their appearances, so do companies. Dress standards exist in the business world for a number of reasons, but the main concern is often about what customers accept.

Others may say how to dress is a matter of personal freedom, but for businesses it is more about whether to make or lose money. Most employers do care about the personal appearances of their employees, because those people represent the companies to their customers.

As a hiring manager I am paid to choose the people who would make the best impression on our customers. There are plenty of well-qualified candidates, so it is not wrong to reject someone who might disappoint my customers. Even though I am open-minded, I can’t expect all our customers are.

There is nobody to blame but yourself if your set of choices does not match that of your preferred employer. No company should have to change to satisfy a candidate simply because he or she is unwilling to respect its standards, as long as its standards are legal.

1. Which of the following is the newspaper editor’s opinion according to Paragraph 2?
A.People’s appearances carry message about themselves.
B.Customers’ choices influence dress standards in companies.
C.Candidates with tattoos or nose rings should be fairly-treated.
D.Strange dress styles should not be encouraged in the workplace.
2. What can be inferred from the text?
A.Candidates have to wear what companies prefer for an interview.
B.What to wear is not a matter of personal choice for companies.
C.Companies sometimes have to change to respect their candidates.
D.Hiring managers make the best impression on their candidates.
3. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Employees MatterB.Personal Choices Matter
C.Appearances MatterD.Hiring Managers Matter
4. The author’s attitude towards strange dress styles in the workplace may best be described as       .
A.enthusiasticB.negative
C.positiveD.sympathetic

6 . You don’t need to be a world-class mountaineer to stand out in a job interview. Here’s my advice on how to nail the most common interview question.

Most people are so eager to show off what they’ve been involved in. Don’t worry, and there will be time for that. The interviewer has reviewed your resume and will ask you plenty about your expertise. “Tell me about yourself” is a question you’re certain to be asked at any job interview.    1    However, sharing something that shows who you really are beyond a piece of paper is a good idea. It will allow the interviewer to know something about your life outside of work.

Everyone has something interesting to share about themselves. I’ve heard people talk about everything from being a world-class sushi chef to an ice carver.    2     Such as you participate   in   competitive sports, you're an accomplished (技艺高超的) pianist and you’re writing your first detective novel. If the information showcases a unique aspect of yourself, and especially if you can link it to what you can bring to your next job, then go for it.

Another way to think about the question is: “What gets you up every morning?” The person also wants to know what your sense of passion and purpose is. That volunteer work on a farm cooperative in South America, for example, shows you have a global perspective.     3     It doesn’t matter how big or small the accomplishment is, as long as it shows you’re struggling to improve yourself. When people are motivated by contributing to something bigger than themselves, they get more satisfaction.

4     Relax, be yourself and tell the truth. Don't approach the interview like you’re trying out for Broadway. It’s more than obvious when someone is trying to memorize their lines and “play the part”. Also, if you overstate what you've done or fully invent a story about yourself, you'll be exposed.    5

A.Take a risk to get personal.
B.Showing honesty is one of the most important things.
C.Running your first 10 kilometers shows you like a challenge.
D.And then everything you say about yourself will be questioned.
E.It's also important to tell it in a way that makes you memorable.
F.Too many people respond to it by giving a recital of their resume.
G."Tell me about yourself" is an invitation for you to share brief information.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了技能优先的劳动力市场的出现。

10 . People have traditionally been hired based primarily on the degree they earned, the job they had, or the people they knew. Skills were not a big part of the conversation in the hiring, or in the economy overall. That’s changing. Workers better understand the need to articulate (清晰地表达) the skills they have and the skills they want. And businesses, eager to fill roles in this historically tight labour market, have started to focus on whether people have the skills to get the job done. Skills come first.

We need to take advantage of this momentum (势头). Skills-first hiring needs to become the new way to connect talent to opportunity. The World Economic Forum estimates we’ll need to reskill over one billion people by 2030.

Employees consider opportunities to learn and grow as the primary driver of great work culture, yet our data shows only 52% of employees feel their manager encourages the use of work time to learn new skills. This major disconnect will start to impact employers as the skills-economy continues to grow. By caring about employees’ careers, investing in their skills development, and helping them transform into new roles, companies benefit too. When leaders offer growth opportunities through internal mobility, they keep their employees nearly twice as long as their peers.

A focus on upskilling needs employers to change their concept of business management. Everyone from the top down needs to understand how critical ongoing learning and upskilling is, not only from an employee’s growth perspective (角度), but also for maintaining a company’s competitive edge. The organizations that keep their employees on top of new technologies are the ones that will see success in this new world of work.

Never in the history of the labour market has been a clear or reliable way to understand whether people and jobs are matched in the most efficient way. The labour market has worked from some, but skills can change that. By harnessing (利用) new data and tools that make it easy for people and companies to identify talent based on skills, along with the access to building more diversified and equitable networks, we have the ability to help fill the most in demand jobs based on what a candidate can do. This will not only create greater equity in our economy, but also greater dynamism. It will create new levels of progress and prosperity.

1. What does the text mainly discuss?
A.A skills-first labour market is emerging.
B.The skills needed for jobs have changed.
C.There comes a marked shift in business demands.
D.The labour market is becoming more competitive.
2. How can employers benefit from skill training according to the text?
A.It helps improve the stability of the workforce.
B.It develops employers’ decision-making ability.
C.It is helpful in building excellent corporate culture.
D.It enhances employees’ sense of responsibility.
3. What is a requirement for upskilling?
A.A network running on the principle of equity.
B.A mentality shift at the management level.
C.The cooperation between labour and management.
D.A system that encourages self-improvement.
4. What is the purpose of the text?
A.To introduce the development of the labour market.
B.To share a unique view about the economy.
C.To explain why the world of work needs to put skills first.
D.To analyze the importance of skills to social progress.
