2 . Stevens, a single mother of three children, was an active volunteer in her children’s school. She was always___ when they played sports in the school filed. 3 . Child care workers help care for children when their parents are working or are busy with other tasks.     1     But for children who are not attending school, they may watch them full-time. Some child care workers are employed (雇佣) through a school or day care center. Others are self-employed and work out of the home.

    2     The workers need to keep the children safe. Also, they must let children fully take part in different activities. So, it’s important that child carers know many games and activities. Besides, they should keep children healthy and make sure they’re in a clean environment.

As for the personality, child care workers need to be very patient when talking to children and guiding them.     3     If not, children will find it hard to get along with them. Also, they need to be able to stay calm (镇静的) in dangerous situations, for example, if a child falls down.

Child care providers are helpful; they can give reports to the parents on how their child is doing. Since some workers help with homework, they know well how a child is dealing with the work. They know how the child communicates with other children. And they know how they deal with certain key situations.     4     They can learn about how the child behaves (表现) when they’re not around.

In many cases, child care workers play the part of a teacher, playmate, etc. They should have a high level of responsibility. Their job plays an important role in the lives of many families.     5    

4 . One of the vital factors of successful job hunting is the job interview, during which creating a good impression is essential for you.    1    .

There are two rules to remember. One is to present yourself perfectly and stress your areas of competence. Second, listen carefully.     2    . Notice the interviewer’s interests and relate your comments to them.

The job interview is the time to “sell” yourself by giving examples of experiences you’ve had related to the job and by revealing your good points. It’s a good idea to have handy job resume(简历) or a list of school courses that prepared you for the job.    3    . Do be honest and avoid just using good words on yourself, but show confidence in yourself and your ability to do the job.

    4    . They could refer to your lack of an academic degree, a long period of unemployment, or lack of work experience if you are entering a new field. Answer sensitive questions briefly and positively. I you believe that this area presents a real barrier(障碍) to a job offer, you could be communicating this doubt to the interviewer. Many times, however, an interviewer will ignore these sensitive areas if you have a confident, positive attitude.

The job interview is an important part of the job search, and the attitude and impression can make the interviewer feel “with you” or “against you”. Remember that you have the power to create a favourable impression.    5    .

Jack Lund, 91, of Richfield, retired     1     the U.S. Postal Service after a perfect 69 years on the job.

“Nobody has ever accused     2    (I) of being smart, and I didn’t know you had to quit when you are 65. I have enjoyed driving the truck, so you could say it is     3    I wanted to do all my life,” said Lund.

Lund never failed in his duty. His fellow employees described him as     4    (rely) and always delivering despite poor weather or car trouble. One time there was four feet of snow on the mountain and he     5    (insist) on heading for Phoenix. After    6    (stop) by a highway patrolman (巡逻者), he said, “This is a mail truck and you can’t stop me unless it is impossibe.” And the patrolman     7    (eventual) let him go.Last week, Lund decided it was time to retire.

On Wednesday, a ceremony was held     8    (honor) and thank him for his years of service at the Richfield Post Office.

Lund said that though he hadn’t made a lot of money, he had led     9    happy life. As for what’s next, he believes his life will be different without the     10     (responsible) of delivering the mail but he can handle it.

10 . I am a book conservator. I work for The Gladys Brooks Book and Paper Conservation Laboratory, attending to the physical well-being of collections materials.

Currently I am working on a copy of The byrth of mankynde, otherwise named The womans book, by Eucharius Roesslin, London, 1545. The book arrived in the lab broken in half. It had suffered from several unsuccessful attempts to repair the damage over the years. I carefully documented the original sewing pattern, so that I could resew it in the same way. Next, I dyed(给上色) leather to match the original color, which I will use to recreate the spine (书脊). After it is completed, the book will receive a new, custom cover, and will be ready to be used again.

I come from an art background, having received my bachelor degree in studio art from Bard College. It was really through an interest in materials (specifically paper, leather, etc) that I became involved in bookbinding—fastening books together and putting covers on them. Later I received a diploma, which led me to many wonderful experience in book conservation.

Working in conservation can be very satisfying: the outcome of our work is unusually obvious. Working to preserve materials for future readers can be creatively challenging, and requires flexible thinking. I like that it is a profession that combines working with your hands with an intellectual component. And of course, I am very happy to take a book that is too fragile to be handled and make it usable again.

Many books that come up to the conservation lab are too fragile to be handled by readers; our work makes these materials accessible. This is important not just for readers that come and use our collection in person, but also for preparation for digitization projects and exhibitions. However, some people think that all we do is repair bibles! This work is much more creative than a few binding repairs. Many bookbinders create books and book art in addition to repair work. They are artists who show their work in galleries and museums.
