文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了四个最新的锻炼方式。

1 . A lot of us spend most of our working day sitting at the computer without moving at all. So, how does the world keep fit? Let’s have a look at some of the latest exercises from around the world.

Towerrunning is a sport you can do in the tall buildings of almost any big city. All you need to do is start at the bottom of an office tower and run up all the stairs until you get to the top. Now, towerrunning has become popular with important races taking place in some of the world’s tallest towers, like the China World Trade Centre in Beijing.

Piloxing started in the USA. The sport is a mix between boxing, pilates (普拉提) and dance. Piloxing uses the power and speed of boxing, while building your muscles and strength with pilates. All of this happens to non-stop loud music, and you learn some great dance moves too.

Paddle boarding on the ocean might look easy, but it is a tough sport. You need to be strong to keep your balance. The sport was adapted from surfing and it had its roots in Polynesia where people used paddling for both work and play-from transport to catching waves.

Trapeze may remind you of the circus act-people fly, dance and move from side to side through the air. Jules Leotard developed the art of trapeze in the mid-nineteenth century in France. To perform trapeze, people must develop upper-body strength to turn and fly.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一项科学事实:预防脑震荡最好的方法是适当的训练,而不是头盔。同时文章针对防止脑震荡提出了相关建议。

2 . A high school soccer player leaps into the air, hits the ball with his head and directs it to a teammate. Amid today’s growing awareness surrounding head injuries in sports, would wearing helmets protect the teen and prevent a possible concussion(脑震荡)?

Almost not. Two top doctors who specialize in sports helmet injuries—Dr. James Robinson and Dr. Larry Lemak, founders of Lemak Sports Medicine, said that there was no good scientific evidence that helmets could reduce the rate of concussion. Both of them regarded proper training, not helmets, as the best concussion prevention for soccer players.

That doesn’t mean there’s no need to worry about soccer concussions. For boys soccer, concussions accounted for 23 percent of all game injuries and 10 percent of all practice injuries, according to the study. For girls soccer, the study found concussions accounted for 36 percent of game injuries and 31 percent of practice injuries.

Knowing that, why isn’t a helmet useful? Isn’t some protection better than none at all? The doctors outlined several reasons helmets provide little protection.

First, wearing a helmet makes the head heavier. A heavier upper part may be more dangerous to the beginners. Secondly—and perhaps most importantly for girls, whose neck muscles are often weaker than boys—a helmet makes the head heavier. Imagine a top-heavy head, Robinson said, which increases the risk of falls. Since girls already face a heightened concussion risk, helmets could be especially dangerous for them. Lastly wearing helmets often gives teens a false sense of security. When helmets were matedated(授权)in hockey, head injuries increased ”because they felt unbeatable. “Sometimes the kids wearing helmets are more daring, said Chad Harrelson, boys soccer coach at St. PauPs in Mobile, ‘”because they think they have that added layer of protection.,,

Both coaches and doctors agree on three main ways to prevent soccer concussions. Firstly, learn proper rules and follow norms. Players who understand soccer’s rules and behave themselves are less likely to put themselves in harm’s way. Secondly, promote proper technique. Ifs important to have players know where other players are positioned. This reduces contact and can prevent head-to-head collisions or other dangerous situations. Thirdly, strengthen neck muscles which can protect both your necks and heads.

1. What can we learn from the words of two top doctors?
A.High quality helmets are a wise choice.
B.Athletes need wear helmets.
C.Science is on the side of helmets.
D.Helmets provide little protection.
2. The data in paragraph 3 serves as an evidence to show________.
A.training is the best prevention
B.how girls players get injured
C.boys are more likely to be hurt in training
D.why concussion should be concerned about
3. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.Why helmets are useless.B.How helmets work.
C.What causes head injuries.D.Whom helmets are fit for.
4. What does the underlined word “norms” in the last paragraph mean?
A.The early examples.B.The set standards.
C.The suggestions of the athletes.D.The ways of using helmets.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。大多数成功人士都很关注自身健康,最近的研究表明健康与成功有联系。

3 . The Link between Fitness and Career Success

It’s no mystery to successful people that there is direct link between sound health & fitness and success in their cancer and personal lives. Successful persons likely show up at the health club consistently, work with a personal trainer, or get up a few minutes early for a heart elevating jog. Successful people like to jump start their day with plenty of energy and the feel-good endorphins(内啡肽)that exercise offers. Recent studies prove the direct link between fitness and success.

Better ability to focus, improved confidence and enhanced ability to follow through were directly attributed to improved fitness levels according to a 2007 University of Georgia study.

Further, a leading manager search company surveyed more than 1,300 managers. When asked to describe their viewpoints of weight and work, 75% said good physical fitness is “critical for career success at the manager level.” 17%, by contrast, said staying in shape is “a nice goal, but secondary to good fitness.”

The CEO of that manager search firm said, “Good physical fitness is critical to success as a manager in today’s work world.” When asked about obesity, 75% of managers said that being overweight is a “serious career impediment (妨碍)”. Do these responses reflect our obsession with weight loss and mirror the constant reports of skinny images in popular culture? Probably not. Rather, there is a very strong link between improved fitness and increased productivity, enhanced ability to solve problems, superior energy, not to mention reduced stress and tiredness, all leading to better job performance. It goes well beyond looking good. Fit people tend to have better eating habits and miss fewer days at work due to a higher resistance to illness. And with competition continually increasing in every industry, companies are now rewarding employees and managers who miss less work and produce more.

A study by Jim McKenna, a British researcher, showed that after exercising participants returned to work more tolerant of themselves and more forgiving of their colleagues. The study concluded that “work performance was consistently higher, time management skills improved, as did mental sharpness.”

All it takes is investing 3—4 sessions a week, 30—45 minutes each, to experience these benefits. Combine strength training and cardiovascular (心血管的) exercise, along with sound nutrition to speed up your mental sharpness, enhance your productivity, improve your mood and better manage stress. As your fitness level increases, likely your position on the ladder of success will too!

1. Successful people are likely to_________
A.have higher resistance to illnessB.get more energy and endorphins
C.lose weight more easilyD.care more about their fitness
2. What does the underlined word “obsession” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.craze.B.training.C.goal.D.imagination.
3. According to the study by the manager search company,   _________.
A.there is a direct link between fitness and success
B.good physical fitness is critical for career success
C.mental sharpness, productivity and mood can be improved
D.people tend to be more tolerant and forgiving after exercising

4 . Some people prefer to have a bite to eat before hitting the gym, known as a fed workout. Others would like to wait until after exercising to refuel their bodies, called a fasted workout.    1     Many experts say there’s no easy answer because it depends on the person.

If you want energy and strength for an ideal workout, you need fuel. A fed workout will provide your body with power. Eating before exercise may help you sustain longer sessions and lift heavier weights.     2     Muscle preservation is also an essential component of strengthening your body. Nitrogen (氮) is critical for processing protein that builds healthy muscles. People tend to lose less nitrogen during a fed workout than a fasted one.

Many fitness enthusiasts are not on board with this idea. They report feeling sick and inactive while trying to exercise after eating. With a fasted workout, you may not get the usual indigestion. Experts for fasted workouts further claim that eating afterwards makes your body use its fat reserves for energy, meaning you will burn more fat.     3     It can cause a sudden drop in your blood glucose (葡萄糖) levels, and you may feel dizzy. You may even be more likely to overeat.

4     Not all foods are created equal. For example, if you choose a fed workout, you’ll probably lose a lot of water during an intense training, so you should consider drinking some beforehand. With a fasted workout, it would help if you had some nutrition right after your session is complete. Drink some water. Then, have a light meal or nutritional snack.

Deciding when to eat for an ideal workout is a personal choice. Both fasted workouts and fed activities have their benefits and shortcomings.     5

A.However, a fasted workout might not work for you.
B.How your body will respond is based on your workout intensity.
C.These benefits can result in burning more fat and shaping a slimmer body.
D.To eat or not to eat, that is the question on many fitness enthusiasts’ minds.
E.Think thoroughly and discuss with your fitness instructor before taking a choice.
F.Knowing what to eat for an ideal workout is just as important as knowing when to eat.
G.A person doing a 30-minute session a day may not have a problem with fasted workouts.

Kill two birds with one stone and take them to the park to kick a footy or throw a ball back and forth. Once everyone’s practised their kicking, throwing and catching skills, take things to the next level by asking them to throw or kick long and make you run for it.

Take the stairs

An oldy but a goody, taking the stairs instead of a lift is great for working the major muscle groups in the legs. 7 . The benefits of walking to school

Encouraging your child to walk to school has many benefits.     1

The rates of childhood obesity and illnesses such as type II Diabetes (糖尿病) can be prevented by a healthy dose of walking.     2     On average around half of all children do not do the minimum one hour a day of physical activity advised by the Health Education Authority.     3    There was very strong evidence that walking to school improves children’s social development. This related to social contacts, independence and road sense. The walkers reported a happy social experience. It is believed that getting a lift to school each day can lead to a child becoming lethargic (无生气的).

According to research, the average drive to school and back releases 800g of CO₂ into the air.     4     If walking to school once a week can save 20 per cent of CO₂ gas produced by driving every day, how much CO₂ can be saved a year!

8 . Maintaining and Building Muscle

Staying healthy is very important, but eating well and getting active is only part of the story. Often, we forget how important it is to concentrate on building and maintaining our muscles.

1     It can also help you improve your immune system, speed up your body's healing process, and let you sleep better. And as you age, the muscles you've developed will help you with your balance, bone strength, posture, and even more confident.     2     After all, you don't have to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger to feel good about being a bit stronger!

With all these great reasons for strength training, there are also so many myths that stop women from doing it.     3     The truth is, since women have about one-fifteenth the testosterone of men, it's much harder for them to get big muscles than it is for men. So go ahead ladies, get stronger. You'll be happy you did!

There are some easy ways to build muscle at home.     4     But did you know that, when done right, push-ups can be as effective as weight lifting? The trick is to make sure you are constantly varying the type of push-up. Placing your hands closer together or further apart are two excellent ways to isolate different muscle groups and ensure you get the maximum return on your effort.

5     For example, squats and lunges for your legs, pull-ups and chin-ups for your upper body, and crunches and planks for your core. With every exercise, you should keep track of how many you do and measure your improvements over time. In addition, keep in mind that once a specific exercise gets too easy, there are always plenty of changes to help increase is difficulty.

There are so many strength training exercises that are simple, easy to do at home, and great for your health. Why not give them a try? Just remember: the hardest part is getting started!

A.Instead, they can try taking a bath o fall asleep.
B.People may fear it is a hard work to insist on strength training.

Until quarantine (隔离期) ends, we are left picturing what physical effort we might make: working out at the gym, playing on a competitive sports team, swimming, biking, or rock climbing. However, we don’t often think of martial arts as a possible activity; instead, we rule it out because we think it’s dangerous, uncommon, and even, impossible. Martial arts isn’t considered a sport, right?

Well, here’s some good news: you're wrong! Martial arts is much more common than people think, and you can start learning at any age. Practicing martial arts is a great way to keep in shape (both physically and mentally). And it’s much less scary and much less difficult than it’s usually portrayed as in movies, so worry not, you don’t need to be the karate kid to have a blast! Let’s look at what you can usually expect from martial arts of any style.

Good martial arts generally requires you to focus on the position and movement of every one of your limbs, sometimes even your breathing too. Think about it: when you leave the gym, your mental state has improved and you are much calmer. This is because you’ve only paid attention to one activity. It is a great way to clear your head, and practice can help you learn to stay more focused in general (say, when you start your schoolwork afterwards).

Long series of choreographed (编排好的) moves (including when to breath in and out) called forms are often described as “moving meditation (冥想)” ; they’re meditative in the same way doing repeated moves is, but much more so. Martial arts practice can be as slow or as intense as you want, but it’s always extremely engaging.

Martial arts also improves your coordination, and greatly improves your posture. I have personally seen students go from slouching and knocking things over to walking tall with their shoulders back in just a couple of months.

There are many styles and countless subtypes and mix-ups of martial arts. Whichever one appeals to you, know that all of them are good choices, competitive or not.

1. Why isn’t martial arts considered a sport by some people?
2. What should people focus their attention on when doing martial arts?
3. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Martial arts practice is beneficial because it can not only make us more facially attractive but also help improve our mental state.
4. a) Which type of sport do you prefer, slow sports like yoga, or competitive sports like basketball? Explain why. (about 40 words)
b)Give an example of another Chinese traditional sport and introduce its advantages. (about 40 words)
