文章大意:本文讲述精神卫生日的含义和意义,并讲述怎样度过一个精神卫生日。

1 . Since the World Mental Health Day(世界精神健康日)was started on October 10th, 1992, more people have begun to pay attention to their mental health. So the mental health day is becoming more popular. What is a mental health day?

“In addition to the World Mental Health Day, it’s important for people to take regular(定期)mental health days for themselves,” says Doctor David A. Mermill. “A mental health day is a way to give yourself a break and pay attention to your mental health. It can be any day.”

How do you take a mental health day? “Mental health days are important for people of all ages and can be done differently,” says Cheryl Rode. “You can go for a trip outdoors, make your favourite meal, turn off your computer, or do some exercise. No matter what activity you choose to relax, the key is to do it often.”

What will you get from a mental health day? First of all, it can help you stay healthy. When you are taking a mental health day, you have time to focus on what your body really needs. You will eat slowly and healthily. Secondly, you can sleep better. One of the first signs of poor mental health is poor sleep. What you should do is to have a relaxing day and drink a glass of warm milk before sleeping.

Let’s have a mental health day right now!

文章大意:本文主要介绍了一项新的研究,关于基因和交朋友之间的关系。

2 . According to a new study, good friends are actually the next closest thing to family in genes(基因).

U. S. researchers have found that we are more genetically similar to our friends than to any stranger. The study suggested that genes may influence how we choose our friends.

The study looked at the gene information of nearly 2,000 people, who were chosen from a small U.S. town as part of a larger heart study. The study showed that friends share about 0.1 percent more DNA than strangers do.

Besides providing DNA information, participants(参与者)in the study were also asked who their closest friends were. Because all of the participants came from such a small community, it made this group suitable for such studies. It has also led to argument. Friendships in small communities are more probably genetically connected, because such communities usually have fewer kinds of genes.

“I wonder whether the ways used in the study can fully explain the known causes which drive friendships,” said Oxford’s Dr. Rory Bowden.

There was one interesting finding from the study. Some of the genes that friends are most likely to have in common are about smell. “You may really love the smell of coffee. And you’re drawn to a place where other people have been drawn because they love the smell of coffee too,” Fowler explained. “And so that might be the possible place for you to make friends.”

1. What do we know about the study?
A.It was difficult to carry out.B.It was a part of a larger heart study.
C.It collected the gene information of the participants' parents.D.It studied the gene information of the participants.
2. What did the participants do in the study?
A.They told researchers the names of their closest friends.B.They made friends from foreign countries.
C.They changed the ways of making friends.D.They provided DNA information of their friends.
3. What’s Dr. Rory Bowden’s attitude towards the study?
A.He shows no interest in it.B.He doesn’t agree with it.
C.He isn’t sure about it.D.He feels worried about it.
4. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Coffee helps strangers come together.B.Good friends will love the smell of coffee.
C.Genes about smell between friends are different.D.Smell may influence people in making friends.
5. What is the text mainly about?
A.The ways of making different studies.B.A study on the relationship between making friends and genes.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了英国的一个高中上学时间比其他学校晚一个小时,调查发现这个学校的学生表现更好。

3 . Drmiinnggg! That’s the sound that kids all over the country hate to hear—the alarm bell. The new school year has just started and children across the UK have to wake up early in the morning to go to school.

But students at one school in north-cast England are lucky. They can lie in bed for an extra(额外的)hour before they go to school. Monkseaton High School has been allowing its pupils to come into school an hour later than other schools.

The headmaster, Dr Paul Kelley, says that this new way helps students pay more attention to their lessons in class. He feels that young people are more energetic and can perform better for the rest of the day. And he adds that for their school students, a late start at school may be better than an early one.

Dr. Kelley tells the BBC that teenagers don't perform very well in the morning and their need to sleep is biological(生物的).

It seems that this new approach to teaching shows positive(乐观的) results. The number of students who sleep in class drops quickly. Besides, the school has already seen a drop in the number of pupils who play truant(逃学)by 27%. More importantly, Dr. Kelley also says that exam results have improved by 20%—30% over the past year.

Classes at Monkseaton High School begin at 10 a.m. and finish at 3:40 p.m. However, the school opens from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The students can come early and leave late if they want.

1. This passage is a speech given by a headmaster.
2. The students in Monkseaton High School can go to school an hour earlier than the students in other schools.
3. According to the passage, Dr. Paul Kelley agrees with the new approach.
4. Thanks to the new approach, the number of pupils who play truant drops.
5. From the passage, we know that classes usually begin at 9:00 a.m. in schools in the UK.

文章大意:本文主要向我们介绍了自己家的房子对我们的身材很有影响,这里给出了保持身材的设计建议。
4 . 阅读下面短文,完成各小题。

Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in weight. (A) It may have an effect on your figure (身材). You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of diet plan.

Open the curtains (窗帘) and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely (可能的) to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious (难为情) when they’re in poorly lit places. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lights and decorate the place with brightness.

Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors affect our appetites (食欲). In one study, people who have dinner in a blue room ate 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food more delicious, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to paint the walls of your house, go blue.

Don’t forget the clock or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to (倾向于) have about 70 fewer calories (卡路里) per meal those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping record of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. (B) When you have problems slowing down the speed of eating, you may turn on relaxing music.

Choose the small dishes. Big dishes can easily make us fat. We will eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large dish over a smaller one, we will eat more calories.

1. 从文中找出(A)处划线单词It所指代的内容。__________

文章大意:本文主要讲述了“文章主题”的含义,并解释了如何能找到文章主题。

5 . Reading is fun! Besides for fun, you want to learn more about the texts while reading. One way we can do (A) this is by finding out the theme of the texts.

It is the “big idea” that runs through the text, connecting the characters and events. It is also what the writer wants to tell us through the story. Sometimes the theme of a text isn’t told directly. For this reason, you have to use clues (线索) in the text to find it out. Themes can be ideas like family, friendship, love and so on. The theme might not be just one word, but it might be an idea such as “Friendship is important.” There may also be more than one theme in a story.

The following steps may help you find out the theme of a text.

Read through the whole text quickly

(B) Usually characters change as the story goes on, so the theme you get at the beginning might not be true at the end! So you need to read through the whole text first.

Find out the clue

After reading the whole text, try to answer the following questions. What important events happened during the story? What was the problem? How did the problem get solved? How did the character(s) change? What did the character(s) learn? The answers may help you to get the clues.

Get the big idea

To get the writer’s purpose of the text, you can read it again. When you read, think of the following questions. Was most of the plot (情节) around friendship? Did the characters solve problems with their families? Did the main character learn the importance of friendship? If one of the answers is “yes”, you may get the big idea.

Check the big idea out

If you’ve found a “big idea”, go through the text to find the evidence (证据) that supports this idea in the text. For example, if there was only one small problem with a character’s family, then “family” might not be the theme of the text. You might find more evidence for other themes.

Have you got the way to find out the theme of a text? Get your favorite book quickly and see if you can find the theme out!

7 . If you are someone who prefers everything to be perfectly clean and 100% germ-free, you might see the door handles (把手) as something unclean. Of course, a lot of people use them very often and it cannot be avoided. So you may have to either clean them every week or even every day, or just put up with it.

The good news is that someone has invented something that can solve the problem we talk about above. Sum Ming Wong and Kin Pong Li, two students coming from the University of Hong Kong, found out quite a while ago that using titanium oxide (氧化钛) is a very successful way to kill germs. They also noticed that it works better with the help of UV light, a kind of ray. The two students designed a special handle which can clean itself without any help.

“We know that people can get a lot of illnesses by touching, such as SARS, MERS and COVID-19,” said the students. “Nowadays, people use chemical cleaning materials to clean up public areas, but they are harmful to the human body. Our invention is very safe. It can be used for a long period of time and work very well” They also said that they got this idea mainly from the SARS war which involved more than 8,000 people all over the world and caused over 700 deaths in China.

The Sero TV

Samsung introduced a TV that can be used to watch videos designed for a smart phone. The Sero TV does this by turning itself from the normal TV position (位置) to an upright position that looks like the shape of a phone. The TV is already on sale in South Korea.

A sitting Segway

Segway people movers have been around for years, but the company just announced its new S-Pod model. The pod looks like a small chair with wheels. It was designed to be used in areas like airports, amusement parks and shopping malls.

Smart waste can

A company called TOWNEW presented a waste can that does a lot of dirty work on its own. When the can is full, the user touches a button to activate (使……运作) the machine’s smart abilities. The device then completely closes off the waste bag inside and puts a new one in place, all by itself. Then the can raises its top so the user can pick up the bag and throw it away.

Motion Pillow

People who snore (打呼噜) can be noisy. This smart pillow was designed by a company called Tenminds to collect information about the sleeper’s head position and breathing during the night. 文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了机器人Bill进入学校教授孩子们有关风和太阳能的特殊课程。

9 . The start of a new school year is always exciting. This year was even more so for some students at White Cloud Primary School. They became the world’s first kids to be “taught” by an electronic teacher. This electronic teacher is not a human-like robot walking around the classroom. Instead, he is a computer-created head that appears, when needed, on students’ computer or phone screens. His name is Bill.

Created by technology company Smart Machines, Bill is able to show human-like behavior. He is designed to teach a special program about environmental-friendly power created by the sun and wind. This program, started in 2005, used to be taught by human teachers.

Just like human teachers, Bill is able to immediately respond to the students’ questions and opinions about the topic quickly. Thanks to computer cameras, he is also able to see and react (反应) to students’ physical actions. For example, if a student smiles at Bill, he responds by smiling back. This two-way exchange helps get the students’ attention. More importantly, it allows the program developers to improve Bill’s behavior and knowledge base (库).

The program has been a great success, according to Smart Machines Spokesman Robert Frost. Frost says, “What is interesting to me is the children’s reaction to Bill. He really captures their attention.” Frost thinks kids don’t find the experience of being taught by smart machines as strange as older people because they have grown up in a time of computers and smart phones.

Maybe human educators will lose their jobs soon because of Bill. But his talking head’s knowledge base is not large. More importantly, even the smartest computer programs can’t guess and react to all the unexpected situations that educators face daily. Bill’s future might be providing kids with one on-one help for different subjects and topics.

1. Bill is ________.
A.a studentB.a kind of computer game
C.a human-like robotD.a computer-created head
2. How does the two-way exchange help the program developers?
A.It lets them correct students’ mistakes.
B.It helps Bill to reply more quickly.
C.It helps them know how to improve Bill.
D.It helps them study students’ body language.
3. Bill isn’t good at ________.
A.getting students’ attentionB.understanding body language
C.replying to students’ questionsD.dealing with unexpected situations
4. Bill might be used to ________ in the future.
A.work as human classroom teachers
B.encourage students’ interest in computers
C.give students personal help with different subjects
D.watch over the behavior of the students in the class room
5. Which of the following is Not True?
A.Bill can show human-like behavior.
B.The experience of being taught by smart machines isn’t strange to kids.
C.Bill’s knowledge base is large enough.
D.If you smile at Bill, he will smile back.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了人们开始减少乘坐飞机,更多人开始做火车。

10 . Sweden has seen a four-percent drop in the number of international air passengers. The air travel was down further, by nine percent. Meanwhile, the number of passengers who travelled by train jumped to a record 32 million last year.

The changes come as the Swedish- born action of “flight shaming” is getting support. More than ever, people are worried about climate (气候)change. They feel ashamed to use any kind of traffic that depends on fossil fuels(化石燃料). Nearly 23,000 Swedes have promised to go flight free. They have, instead, shown interest in “climate smart travel.”

“Flight shaming” has put pressure on airline to cut down on their greenhouse gas emissions(温室气体排放). Some of them have stopped using old and fuel-thirsty planes. The models they use now are lighter. Some airlines are also asking passengers to pre-order food. This helps to further cut down the weight of planes. As a result, much less fuel is being used now.

Richard Gustafson is the CEO of a Swedish airline. He also supports the “flight shaming” action. However, he doesn’t believe putting an end to flying is the only way out. Instead, airlines must take action to cut pollution. “The journey toward a cleaner world will be long,” Gustafson said.“One day, a scientist will invent jet engines that don’t depend on fossil fuels. I think those planes will appear in, say, 20 years’ time.”
