3 . If you go to a fast food restaurant, you will probably see a lot of teenagers. Today, many teenagers are overweight, and some of this is because of their bad eating habits. Most teenagers love food with a lot of fat, oil, salt, and sugar. People often call this kind of food “junk food”.
But bad eating habits go beyond fast food. We find many teenagers have bad eating habits. Some don’t have breakfast before they go to school. During the day, some don’t have a proper meal for lunch. In a recent survey at one school, scientists found that over two-thirds of the students didn’t follow a healthy diet. They didn’t like vegetables, and many of them didn’t like to eat fruits. They preferred to eat food with a lot of salt, sugar, or fat.
Parents today also worry about their children’s diet. Some doctors give the following advice:

The program will get families, schools, newspapers, magazines and TVs to join together and deal with the students’ obesity so that students will be at a healthier weight. The program includes: Food stores should sell healthier foods. Schools should serve healthier meals with less fat and should also offer gym classes.
The lady is trying to fight the students’ obesity all over the country because it can cause illnesses and higher health cost. She wants the students to eat right, exercise more and control (控制) their weight. She also wants the students to understand it is important to have less sweet food, and drink water, milk and fresh juice, but not to choose cokes. At the same time she has also set a good example by planting a vegetable garden. She hopes that the garden will encourage more people to plant one too.

A new research suggests that children who are brought up on healthy diets are more intelligent compared with those junk food eaters. It was found toddlers (蹒跚学步的孩子) who are fed a diet high in fats, sugars, and processed foods had lower IQs than those fed pasta, salads and fruit. The effect is so great that researchers from the University of Bristol said those children with a “healthier” diet may get an IQ improvement. Scientists stressed a good diet was vital in a child’s early life as the brain grows at its fastest rate during the first three years of life. This indicated head growth at this time is linked to intellectual ability and it is possible that good nutrition during this period may encourage the best brain growth.
Scientists followed the long-term health and happiness of around 14, 000 children born in 1991 and 1992 as part of the West Country’s Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Parents were quizzed about the types and frequency of the food and drink their children consumed when they were three, four, seven and eight and a half years old. Their answers were marked on a sliding scale (浮动计算表). Minus two is for the healthiest while ten is for the unhealthiest. IQ was measured by a test—the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (韦氏儿童智力量表) —of 4, 000 children when they were eight and a half years old. The results found after considering some other factors, a mainly processed food diet at the age of three was connected with a lower IQ at the age of eight and a half, but whether the diet was improved after that age would never influence the result. Every one point increase in dietary score was connected with a 1.67 fall in IQ.

6 . Why do we cook food? Well, we didn’t have to cook food before people discovered fire, just like wild animals do. The strange thing is, even after fire was discovered, that no one realized that they could use it to cook! They built fire mainly to scare away (吓跑) wild animals.
Some scientists think that one day, someone must have dropped a bit of meat or fish in the fire. After a while they noticed how good it smelled, tasted it and realised the heat had made it much more enjoyable to eat. Cooking was born, and finally everyone was doing it because it has three very important effects (效果) on our food.
First, it makes a lot of raw, hard food softer and easier to eat. Take a potato, for example. It starts off as a solid part but cooking can turn it into soft potato.
Second, it makes our food safer to eat. Sometimes food has microbes (微生物) that could make us ill. However, most of these microbes don’t like really hot temperature. Cooking kills them, so they can’t make us sick.
Third, and this is the most exciting effect for a cook like me cooking can change food into something that looks, smells and tastes wonderful.

7 . If you’re too busy, maybe it’s time for you to slow down and enjoy a meal with a friend. Try to get away from fast food and choose slow food.
For years, the pace of life has increased for many people. They are too busy to cook. Luckily, business people provide a “fast” way to deal with the problem. You can go to the supermarket and buy cooked food. All you have to do is to heat it and you can enjoy your meal in 10 minutes.
Still too slow? OK, just go to a fast food restaurant, order your meal and within 5 minutes it will be made for you.
The problem is health. Fast food has much more fat, sugar, salt, oil and calories and far few vitamins than homemade food. And so, since people have always wanted to live longer, a small but growing population is choosing not only fresh food, but also organic (有机的) food.
Another reason for changes in eating habits is social. Over the centuries, mealtime has been used to visit, laugh and learn. However, today most of us are having a very different lifestyle! Some people have realized it and they are looking for ways to return to that. Goodbye, McDonald’s.
Finally, it makes you feel good to plan your meal, cook your meal and see your meal looking like the picture in your cookbook. So if you’re too busy, maybe it’s time for you to slow down and enjoy homemade meal.
1. For people who are too busy to cook, they have no time to ________.A.order the meal | B.plan the meal | C.heat the food | D.enjoy the food |

10 . Many health products advertised (广告) on TV say they can improve your memory. But only ordinary food and healthy habits have been shown to work.
A research team from University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) has made a four-step plan to improve your memory in just 14 days. “It sounds like another advertisement, but it really works,” says Gary Small, a professor from UCLA. The team found the four-step plan improved the memory of teenagers under stress (压力) and older people. Here’s the program:
Memory training:
Train yourself with memory exercises throughout the day.
Healthy diet:
Eat five rather than three meals a day but less food for each meal. The food should be rich in omega-3 , such as whole grains and vegetables with antioxidants (抗氧化剂).
Physical exercise:
Have some physical exercise such as walking, basketball or running every day. Physical exercise helps your brain stay sharp.
Managing stress:
Express your feelings instead of bottling them up. Make time for fun and relaxation. Stress is one of the brain’s worst enemies. It prevents you from thinking clearly and enjoying life.
After a two-week study that included memory exercises, physical training and diet changes, the memories of the people who’re tested improved by about 5%.
“We’ve known for years that diet and exercise can help people keep their physical health. This is a key part of healthy aging.” said Small. “But keeping mentally active is just as important. Now we have proved (证明) that people can improve their rnemories through a program of memory exercises and managing stress.”
