1 . The global climate (全球气候) has been changing over thousands of years. The global average temperature (平均气温) today is about 15℃. Scientists find that the planet is warming faster than ever before. The 20 warmest years on record have been in the past 22 years. If this situation continues, temperatures may rise by 3—5℃ by 2100.
Scientists say we should try to stop the situation and not allow the global average temperature to rise more than 1.5℃. Even a 2℃ rise will be bad for us all. Now, 0.5℃ doesn’t sound like much—but it could make a big difference to the planet.
A 2℃ rise means that all the coral reefs (珊瑚礁) will disappear, but a 1.5℃ rise means that there will still be some. Also, 18 percent of the insects (昆虫) on the earth will disappear if the temperature goes up by 2℃. But only 6 percent will disappear at 1.5℃. A 2℃ rise will also mean that 37 percent of people will be influenced by dangerous heatwaves. That’s twice the number compared to at a 1.5℃ rise.
Do you want to know what scientists say? They say that everyone and everything is far better off in a world that limits the rise to 1.5℃.
So, what can we do? Please return to us in our magazine next month, you will read about the advice given by the world’s top scientists, researchers and leading environmental protectors. We’d also like to hear about your ideas and suggestions. Please write to us at 123socialmagazine@yahoo.co.uk. Let’s work together to limit the temperature rise to 1.5℃.

3 . Roberta, Peter and Phyllis lived in a large house in London. Father worked hard in a government office. He was never angry and always ready for a game. Mother was almost at home, ready to play with the children, read to them, and help them do their home lessons.
These three lucky children always had everything they needed: pretty clothes, good fires, a lovely playroom and a dog called James. They had a happy life, but they did not know how happy till the pretty life in the large house was over.
Peter had a toy and it broke. After dinner, Peter showed Father the broken toy. Father looked it over and promised to repair it on Saturday.
At that moment two men came to see Father. Minutes passed. Father’s voice came out from the study, loud and angry.
More time passed. Then Mother came in and said, “Father’s been called away— on business.”
A week after their father went away, their mother said, “Now, we’re going to move to the country. A pretty little white house, called Three Chimneys.”
The family started packing: clothes, plates, candles and also tables and chairs. “We seem to be taking all the ugly things,” said Roberta.
“We’re taking the useful ones,” said Mother. “We will have to get used to a poor life.”
Peter said happily, “I do like moving! I wish we moved once a month.” Mother laughed and said, “I don’t like moving!”
As she turned away, Roberta saw her face. She never forgot it. “Oh, Mother,” she whispered, “how I love you! You are brave enough to laugh when you’re feeling like that!”
Then they took a train to Three Chimneys. No one knew how long they had been in the train when Mother woke them up.
They stood in the cold night air on the dark platform (站台). At that moment they didn’t know how important the station and the trains would become to them. They didn’t know they were going to be the railway children.

4 . The Most Valuable Player (MVP) award was what I hoped to get. Yes, MVP-the best. Win this award and everyone regards you as the best player on your team.
Back in Grade 6, soccer became my favorite sport. I wasn’t the best player on the team at the beginning of the year. But after a lot of hard practice, by the end of the year, I felt that I was the MVP.
As the soccer season went on, our team made it to the playoffs (季后赛). We finished second in the city. We were a very good team, and I was a big part of that. Kenny was the captain, but I had the most goals on the team. Kenny would always pass the ball to all his players. At the end of the year, there was a sports dinner at school. People got awards for outstanding performances. Everyone felt that I would get the MVP. When the dinner almost finished, the coach stood up and announced the winners for the awards. “The winner for MVP is...Kenny!” he said.
I didn’t understand why. After the event, the coach came up to me and explained. He said, “You were the best player on the team, but you did not pass the ball. You were out there for yourself and not for the team. You have to realize that soccer is about the team, not about one individual player.” That night, I did receive a trophy (奖杯). It was called the Most Improved Player (MIP). However, I was embarrassed by what the coach said.
Now I’m in Grade 9 and the captain of the soccer team. I feel that I have learned that a team sport is not just “you”. It’s about “us”. I am both a better player and a better captain because of this.

5 . After China’s Tianwen-1 probe entered Mars’ orbit(轨道) on Feb.10th, NASA’s Perseverance rover(“毅力”号火星车) made a historic landing on the surface of Mars on Feb. 18th. This is the fifth rover that NASA has sent to Mars and it is full of firsts. It will be the first rover to search for signs of ancient life. A helicopter will fly on the planet for the first time as well. The rover is also better at solving problems on its own than previous rovers.
Landing a spacecraft on Mars isn’t easy. It had to go through the “seven minutes of terror”(惊险七分钟) all by itself. Since it takes 11 minutes for a radio signal to travel from Earth to Mars, NASA couldn’t control the craft during the process.
The spacecraft hit the top of the Martian atmosphere(大气层) moving at 12,000 miles per hour and had to slow down to 1.7 miles per hour within seven minutes before landing. At the same time, the surface of the craft is heated up to about 1,300 ℃. This high temperature could destroy the rover! But since the craft’s heat shield(抗热涂层) was able to take in most of this heat. Perseverance itself only reached room temperature.
The craft then used a parachute(降落伞) and a sky crane(空中吊车) to slow itself down for its final landing on Mars. A video of the landing was shared online later, at lowing people all over the world to see the amazing moment for themselves. The rover even recorded he sound of the wind on Mars for the first time.

You’re probably really worried about your sick relative and fear that everyone else in your family will get sick. Fortunately, it’s possible to prevent the virus from spreading, even if you all live together.
The best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is to stay away from people who are ill, but this is very hard if one of your family members is sick.
Since the virus can live on surfaces, using shared space with a sick family member increases your risk of getting sick. If your home has more bathrooms, allow the sick family member to have their own bathroom until they recover.
You may be used to sharing things with your family members, but it’s important to stop until they get better. When your sick family member uses things like kitchen dishes and towels, those things are polluted. Sharing these things increases your risk of getting sick.
Keep visitors out of your home until your family member recovers.
A.If someone in your house is sick, don’t allow any visitors into your home. |
B.Keeping away from the sick people is also important. |
C.Try not to share anything with a family member who’s sick just to be safe. |

Beijing Opera is the most representative of all Chinese traditional dramatic art forms and the largest Chinese opera form. Having a history of about 200 years, it is developed from absorbing(吸收)many other dramatic forms, mostly from the local drama 'Huiban', which was popular in South China during the 18th century. It is a scenic(戏剧的)art integrating music, performance, literature, aria, and face painting.
Theatrical art forms in many other countries do not present singing, dancing and spoken parts in one single drama. An opera singer, for example, neither dances nor speaks on stage; there are no singing or dancing parts in a modern play; in a dance drama, the dancer has no speaking role and does not sing either. Traditional Chinese drama, including Beijing Opera, is a kind of entertainment which includes spoken parts, singing, dancing and acrobatics.
In addition to its presence in China, Beijing Opera has spread to many other places. Mer Lanfang, one of the most famous performers(表演者)of all time, was the first to introduce Beijing Opera to foreigners and made highly successful tours to foreign countries.
“You will be puzzled(困惑)all the way through and a little bored from time to time; but you will be charmed and interested. You will be strongly attracted to Beijing Opera even if you know nothing of the dramatic background. "This is how one American traveller described his first experience in watching Beijing Opera.
