3 . An old steel-making center in Beijing is getting new life as a place for shopping, eating and working.

Now, it is also being shown on televisions during this year’s Winter Olympics. The center has large cooling towers and smokestacks, which are big industrial structures for dealing with pollution and heat. This month, however, they are being seen with the Olympic ski jumping competition known as “Big Air”.

China closed the Shougang steel factory before the 2008 Summer Olympics to reduce air pollution. Since then, the factory has been turned into a place where people work, eat and walk on grassy areas. The old parts of the factory are still there. But many spaces have been turned into offices. “Big Air” skiing is new for this Olympics. The event usually takes place in mountain ski areas or in temporary (临时的) places inside sports stadiums. But the Shougang ramp (坡道) is a permanent (永久的) structure. Other Big Air events around the world are made by using materials that are easy to take down when the event ends,

Chinese officials hope that Beijing will be a place for future competitions. The competitors like the ramp because the structure is safe. When they compete on temporary ramps, they do not feel safe. Some of them said the city ramp was just as good as the ones in the mountains.

Skier Kirsty Muir of Great Britain called the place “amazing” and “cool”. Antoine Adelisse of France said he was a little upset to be at the top of the jump and not see mountains.

There is a question about how many cities will be able to build a structure like the one in China. The ramp in Beijing is built into a larger seating area that can be used for concerts and other performances. Goepper said more competition places like the one in Shougang would help the sport find new fans since more people can see the event in cities.

6 . Thousands of people living in Los Angeles have been told to evacuate （疏散）because of a fast-moving wildfire that began in the early hours of Monday morning.

The Getty Fire is close to some of the city’s most expensive homes. It’s reported that wildfires are continuing to rage in many other areas. Some 3300 homes are in the evacuation area. The wildfire is putting LA’ wealthy Brentwood neighborhood in danger, and a local man told the LA Times he was thinking about which of his two cars should be left behind. “I have to decided what I am going to do with my Ferrari（法拉利）,” the 47-year-old man said.

Meanwhile, wildfires are continuing to sweep through northern California. Some 180,000 people have been ordered to leave homes, with roads around Santa Rosa north of San Francisco full of cars as people tried to leave the area. The biggest blockouts（断电）in the state’s history have already left a million people without electricity. Power companies are trying to stop broken cables（电缆）from starting new fires.

The main evacation order in the north covers a huge area of Sonama Country, including Santa Rosa. Sonoma has been hit by the Kincade fire, which started on Wednesday and has burned through a big area of land. It got worse because of the high winds. The 150-year-old Soda Rock Windery was among the places destroyed.

There are fears that the fires could cross the 101 highway and enter area that have not seen wildfires since the 1940s. Fears about the spread of the wildfires led Pacific Gas & Electrc (PG&S) to start a precautionary（预防性的）blockout. Power was shut off to 940,000 families in northern California over the weekend. PG&S said it would work to restart services on Monday but warned of further power cuts as soon as Tuesday if the forecast strong winds returned.

People around the world know LEGOs very well. These years, the LEGO Group are trying using recycled plastic(可回收塑料) to make LEGO bricks(积木). They aren’t ready yet, but the company says it’s making big progress.

In fact, people who often play LEGOs may know that the first LEGO brick came out in 1949. Since(自从) about 1960, LEGO bricks have been made from a kind of plastic called ABS. Sadly, it can’t really be recycled, and it takes a long time to break down.

But since 2015, LEGO has been trying to make their products(产品) more environment-friendly. Three years ago, the company began making some LEGO parts with a kind of plastic made from sugar cane(甘蔗). Recently, LEGO decided to use paper bags only. And the company has also started to make bricks by using recycled plastic.

Over the past three years, the company has tested over 250 different ways of creating LEGO bricks from recycled plastic. Now, the company has found a way to make a good 2×4 brick from PET plastic, which is softer(柔软) than ABS plastic and can be found in things like bottles and clothing. The only problem is that the company should think about how to make PET plastic stronger and give it better clutch power(离合力) like ABS.

The company truly believes that they can find more sustainable materials(可持续材料) to make all of their main products by the year 2030. Making bricks from used PET instead of(而不是) new ABS can not only cut plastic waste, but also cut pollution by about 70%.

8 . Shenzhou 13 manned spacecraft (载人航天飞船) went to space (太空) successfully on October 16. Three Chinese astronauts (航天员), Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping, Ye Guangfu were taken to space. They will stay in space for six months. It is the eighth time for Chinese to visit space after Yang Liwei went as the first Chinese 18 years ago. These special “visitors” can take fantastic photos in space, just like taking trips there. Can common people go to visit space like them? The answer is “yes”.

On September 15, Space X sent four common people into space. The four spent three days in space. Just two months ago, in July, 70-year -old British billionaire (亿万富翁) Richard Branson, and 57-year-old American billionaire Jeff Bezos, both flew into space. A Russian film team stayed on the International Space Station from Oct 5 to 16 to film the movie Challenge. It’s the first time a movie was filmed in space.
